The Saint Maddox Odyssey

This was Saint’s method, unfolding exactly as he’d planned it; with Sallow’s help, working his way slowly into Whitlock’s field of vision, building a face the chairman would recognize.

Getting there required more than his own effort, though. It also required Villa’s first team to stay just competitive enough, for just long enough, that nobody panicked and made a change before Saint’s case was fully built.

Which put Saint in the odd position of privately hoping Ventham could hang on a few more weeks, and privately worried, all the same, that Ventham might actually pull it off.

Whatever else you said about Ventham, the man had genuine ability. Nobody survives that long in English management on reputation alone. He’d taken charge of a national side once, even if that particular Chapter had ended badly for everyone involved.

A week felt both short and endless to Saint these days. Short, because he was improving fast, learning something new almost daily. Endless, because the U21 calendar only gave him one fixture a week, and most weeks the opposition simply wasn’t strong enough to test him properly.

By this point, in Saint’s honest assessment, none of the U21 opposition really was. Rocher had crossed some invisible line already; the kind of talent that would hold up fine even two divisions higher, let alone at this level. Lavelle wasn’t far behind him, a genuine top-half Championship player already, arguably more.

With those two carrying the side, and a supporting cast that had improved steadily under Saint’s system, the U21s had turned into something close to an unstoppable ride.

Football doesn’t reward pure talent alone, though. Individual quality only gets a team so far, the manager’s job is turning a collection of good players into something coherent, something greater than the sum of its parts.

Klopp’s Dortmund had proven exactly that a few years earlier; a squad that, on paper, had no business competing with Bayern, doing it anyway through pure structural cohesion. Simeone was building something similar at Atlético, grinding out results against clubs with three times the individual talent, purely through organisation and will.

Getting there the way Klopp and Simeone had required years of earned authority in a first-team dressing room. What Saint had built with the U21s was, by comparison, a considerably easier task; younger players, less ego, and a manager not much older than the group he was coaching, which somehow made his authority feel more natural rather than less.

A year and a half of real command at U18 level, a system that produced immediate results the moment he implemented it with the U21s, and two generational talents leading the line; all of it added up in a way that made the whole project look, from the outside, almost inevitable.

”Move Rocher and Lavelle up to the first team.” Whitlock said it from the stands at Villa’s training ground, watching the U21s take on Huddersfield Town’s academy.

4–1, another comfortable win, Rocher and Lavelle both at their best. That performance was exactly what pushed Whitlock to say it out loud after the final whistle.

He’d made a point of watching quietly, unannounced; chairmen showing up at academy fixtures tend to unsettle young players, and there was no upside to the players clocking who was in the stands. It would also, inevitably, have raised questions if word got out that the chairman had skipped a first-team match to watch the U21s instead.

There’d been press speculation for weeks now that Ventham’s time was running short. Publicly, nobody at the club was confirming any of it; no sense giving the story more oxygen while there was still a season to salvage.

As it happened, Ventham’s own results had just found a small mercy. The first team’s losing run finally ended; not with a win, but a draw, which under the circumstances felt like something close to relief.

Twenty games into the season, Huddersfield sat third with thirty-four points. Villa were one place above the relegation zone. On paper, this wasn’t remotely an even match.

The result on the pitch backed that up. Villa, in genuinely poor form lately, only managed a 1–1 draw at home against a side they had no business struggling with; though at least it stopped a three-match losing streak.

”I don’t think Ventham will actually use them,” Sallow said, hesitating slightly.

”What’s the issue?” Whitlock caught the hesitation immediately.

”There’s history between Ventham and Saint. Saint’s a coach we developed ourselves; he’s young, but genuinely talented, and I brought him into the first team early in the season hoping he’d learn under a proven manager. Ventham took it as me planting a spy.” Privately, Sallow’s real worry was different: what losing Rocher and Lavelle would do to the U21s’ results, given how obviously the entire system revolved around the two of them.

But that wasn’t what he said out loud. Instead, he steered the conversation carefully; framing Saint as the club’s own investment, someone Sallow had promoted purely to develop him, with no hidden agenda behind it.

Everything Sallow had done, in his telling, had been for the good of the club. And now here was Saint, exiled to the U21s by Ventham’s own resentment; producing excellent results anyway, but undeniably pushed out unfairly.

”Hm.” Whitlock’s expression cooled slightly at that.

”So I’m a little concerned that even if we push these two up to the first team, Ventham’s personal feelings toward Saint might get in the way of actually playing them.” Sallow understood exactly how much value Whitlock now placed on Rocher and Lavelle; arguably, on Lavelle in particular, given how the conversation had started.

Whitlock hadn’t built his fortune by accident. Players weren’t commodities to the supporters filling Villa Park every other week, but to a chairman with Whitlock’s instincts, that distinction mattered rather less.

”That’s not something we need to worry about. Get both of them reporting to the first team,” Whitlock said, unbothered.

”Oh... and get their new contracts sorted as soon as possible.” Something clearly clicked for him as he said it.

All three of Saint’s French signings were still on the original two-year deals; a favour to Saint at the time, given how young and unproven they’d all been. Sallow, in hindsight, probably regretted not pushing for longer terms.

”I’ll likely need Saint’s help with that.” Sallow knew exactly how much outside interest had built around both players; clubs circling, agents calling, the usual consequence of a young player performing above expectation.

”Hm?” At the mention of Saint’s name, Whitlock found himself picturing the young coach standing on the touchline; unmistakably young for the role, and yet carrying himself with a confidence that looked entirely out of place on someone that age. Command, and total ease with it.

”He’s a different sort of young man, that one.” Whitlock said it almost to himself.

”Have Saint handle the contract conversations with both of them. And make sure he knows; this club doesn’t forget the people who earn it results.” Whitlock said it plainly, and that was that.
