The Saint Maddox Odyssey

”Come on... that’s it, that’s the win!” The final whistle went at Reading’s training ground, Villa’s U21s edging it 2–1.

Villa’s second goal came in the third minute of additional time. Lavelle whipping in a good cross, Robbie Lucas getting up to head it home, drawing the first blood of the afternoon and putting Villa ahead.

But the lead didn’t make the rest of the match comfortable. Two weeks into the job, Saint’s side still had rough edges, and it showed. The 1–0 scoreline held until half-time, then Reading equalised early in the second half.

It took Rocher, arriving late as the game’s designated difference-maker, to settle it; cutting inside from the left, beating two defenders in tight space, and finishing clean into the far corner.

”Easy. Breathe.” Saint, watching from the technical area, was noticeably calmer than Cadman beside him, who was already halfway to celebrating.

Inside, Saint was pleased too; genuinely. But he’d learned to keep the outward reaction level, win or lose. There was plenty in that ninety minutes worth worrying about: shape breaking down under any pressure, players not yet reading each other’s runs, transitions too slow, and a persistent habit of not looking for Lavelle first the moment the ball turned over.

He didn’t bother shaking hands with Reading’s coach after the match. Since he was the same man who’d been openly dismissive of Saint before kickoff, and who disappeared straight down the tunnel the moment the final whistle confirmed the loss.

Saint found it mildly funny more than anything. Some people only enjoy football when they’re the ones walking off happy.

Difficult win or not, three points put the U21 group back on track, and the mood around the group afterward reflected it; especially among the trio who’d started: Lavelle with the assist, Rocher with the winner, and Rami, solid again at the back despite the goal conceded, which had precisely nothing to do with him.

Worth remembering, too, that Rami had been playing organised, competitive football for barely a few months in his life.

Not that many people at the club were paying attention either way. That same evening, Villa’s first team suffered a defeat of their own.

Three draws on the spin had already dulled the early-season buzz, and the latest league outing hadn’t helped. Going away at a struggling side second-from-bottom, Villa had only managed a draw themselves, which should have been an easy win on paper.

Whatever momentum remained evaporated completely the following week. A flat 0–2 defeat, Whitfield anonymous for the full ninety, midfield unable to string three passes together, let alone create anything resembling a chance.

Two winless results in a row dropped Villa out of the automatic promotion places entirely; out of the top three altogether, for the first time all season. Not catastrophic, not yet. One good result would put them right back in the mix. But that assumed the good result was actually coming.

It wasn’t. Round thirteen brought a third defeat, 3–0 away from home, worse in scoreline than the last. This time it wasn’t only midfield collapsing; the defence cracked too, and the third goal conceded came directly off a mistimed forward run from Loach, exactly the kind of exposure Saint had flagged weeks earlier.

Five wins, three draws, one loss had been the record after nine games. Now it read five wins, four draws, three losses. This was or could not be called a collapse, not yet. But the trajectory was unmistakably wobbling downwards, and Saint had said as much to Sallow before any of it happened.

The U21s, meanwhile, kept climbing in the opposite direction. Their next fixture, away at QPR’s academy, produced the cleanest performance yet: 3–0, no argument about it.

Lavelle opened the scoring, Rocher doubled it before the break, and Danny Capel added a third with a long-range strike early in the second half; the exact inverse of what the first team had managed that same week.

Two wins on the bounce, and Cadman was fully won over. Three weeks in, and he’d stopped seeing himself as Saint’s equal in the dugout and started treating him as the one who actually knew what he was doing.

In Cadman’s eyes, Saint wasn’t just talented, he was building something that didn’t exist anywhere else. The shape Villa’s U21s were now playing wasn’t lifted wholesale from anyone.

Saint’s use of Lavelle, tucked infield off the left rather than chasing the touchline, echoed the freedom Wenger had once given Pires at Arsenal; Saint said as much himself, credited the inspiration openly, but the specific system built around it was his own construction, refined well past the original template.

Saint stayed modest about it in public. Privately, he knew exactly how much that modesty was doing for him, nothing wins over a skeptic faster than watching someone underplay a gift you’ve just watched them use.

Cadman’s buy-in changed the atmosphere around the group completely. Two straight wins had done wonders for confidence among Villa’s young players too; belief, once it starts building, tends to compound.

Scout’s Eye made the squad-building easier than it looked from outside. Every player Saint had pushed into this group was, by the system’s own measure, either the most talented or the best-suited option available at their position. Round thirteen only reinforced it with a 4–1 win over Wolves’ academy side, comfortable throughout.

Rocher scored in his third straight match, and set one up besides; the beneficiary this time a young striker named Danny Capel, getting his own name on the scoresheet. Lavelle chipped in two assists of his own, including the pass that sent Rocher through for his goal. Three wins running for the U21s.

The first team, in the meantime, was still searching. Even against the division’s bottom side that same week, Villa could only scrape a draw.
