The Saint Maddox Odyssey

”Thank you to Terry Ventham for his contribution to Aston Villa over the past eight months.” — Aston Villa’s official website.

Ventham’s exit made news across the Midlands almost immediately. Villa might currently be sitting in the Championship, but the club still carried significant weight in English football’s history; seven league titles, a European Cup, a name that meant something well beyond its current league position.

For anyone who’d been following the season closely, the departure itself was no surprise. Fans and press alike had been bracing for exactly this outcome for weeks, some of them openly wishing for it.

What came next was the actual story.

”Following careful consideration, the club can confirm that the position of head coach will be filled by U21 head coach Saint Maddox.” — Aston Villa’s official website.

Saint had specifically requested the club use his full name in the announcement rather than any nickname. He’d never been especially fond of ”Lee” himself, given who it inevitably called to mind; a name too tangled up in his father’s memory and a legend’s shadow to feel fully his own, however much he respected the man behind it.

Not that he’d had any say in the name originally. It had come with the body, fixed and unchangeable. The one small mercy was that it had never spread much beyond a handful of people who’d known him since the restaurant days.

”Who’s Saint Maddox?” was the first reaction from most of the fanbase reading the announcement.

”Wait... isn’t that the U21 coach?” Some made the connection quickly enough. Local coverage of the academy had been building for months by that point.

Thirty-one years old, and already the man who’d taken the U21s on an extraordinary run, developing Rocher and Lavelle into the players half the fanbase was already calling the finds of the decade.

”How is this actually happening” was the general tenor of the shock that followed.

Nobody was disputing that Saint’s U21 results were genuinely outstanding; top of their table, more than ten points clear of second place at this point in the season. But strong academy results and a Championship survival fight were two entirely different propositions, and plenty of supporters weren’t ready to conflate the two.

It wasn’t really about coaching ability, not for most people reacting online that night. It was the sheer improbability of it; a man barely into his thirties, with less than five years of coaching experience behind him, suddenly running a first team fighting to stay in the division.

”Danny... you seen the announcement?” Owen was on the phone within minutes of the news breaking.

”Just watched it, mate. Tell me my eyes are broken.” Marcus picked up the call almost immediately after.

As both Villa supporters and genuine friends of Saint’s, this group found themselves genuinely torn. As fans, they wanted a proven, experienced manager steering the club through a relegation fight. As Saint’s mates, loyalty pulled them the other way entirely.

Danny, Marcus, and Owen knew Saint better than nearly anyone connected to the club. They knew, better than the average supporter, exactly how sharp he really was. Even with that in mind, none of them could pretend this didn’t feel like an enormous gamble.

”Is Sallow having a laugh? Is the whole board having a laugh?” was the general mood echoing across most of the fanbase that night.

Within hours of the announcement, the club’s social channels and forums were flooded; thousands of comments, overwhelmingly incredulous, plenty of them furious.

The regional press moved just as fast. A Championship club appointing a thirty-one-year-old with barely three years’ coaching experience was, by any measure, a genuinely newsworthy story, and every Midlands outlet ran with it.

”Is Villa chasing headlines rather than results?” was roughly the tone across most of the coverage.

Not everyone piled on, though. Ashwell, writing for the Midlands Sports Gazette, took a notably different angle.

”Whatever happens next, Villa and Saint Maddox are about to write themselves into English football history... for better or worse.” Ashwell posted it to his own blog within the hour, unwilling to wait for the next print edition.

At thirty-one, and barely five years removed from his latest UEFA A Licence coaching badge, Saint had already broken every record English football had for how fast a coach could climb, and this appointment pushed the story national.

It reached well beyond the Midlands within a day: London papers, Manchester papers, even a mention on national radio.

Nationally, though, the tone shifted sharply. Where local coverage carried genuine intrigue, the wider football press mostly treated it as a punchline; pundits laughing it off on air, plenty of jokes made at Villa’s expense before a ball had even been kicked under the new regime.

”Yannick... this had better be important.” Lavelle was calling Rocher, well past midnight, right as Villa’s announcement was breaking.

Unlike Lavelle, still very much single, Rocher was a married man now; and being interrupted mid-something by a phone call at that particular hour did not go down well.

If it hadn’t been Lavelle calling, Rocher would almost certainly have made him wait until morning and had words about it face to face.

”Antoine... is he actually a genius? Like, an actual genius?” Lavelle didn’t seem remotely bothered by how annoyed Rocher sounded.

”Yes, mate, he’s a genius, we’ve established this...” Rocher started, clearly winding up to hang up on him.

”No, Antoine, listen... Saint’s got the job. Saint’s got the first team job.” That stopped Rocher cold.

”Wait... what?! Say that again.” Every ounce of irritation drained out of his voice in an instant.

”It’s official. Club posted it. Ventham’s gone, Saint’s the new manager.” If anyone in the world understood exactly what that sentence meant, it was these two. Everything they’d built at Villa traced directly back to one man walking into a French training ground and believing in them before anyone else had.

It was no exaggeration to say Saint was the person both of them respected more than anyone else in football. And both of them knew, instantly, that this changed everything about their own situation in that dressing room.

Villa Park, that night, belonged to chaos; fans, press, players, all of it churning at once.

The one person at the centre of all that noise, as it turned out, went home, slept soundly, and didn’t wake until well past sunrise.
