The Saint Maddox Odyssey

”Whitfield! Move!” Saint couldn’t help himself, the shout tearing out across Bodymoor Heath before he’d even decided to say it.

Aaron Whitfield wasn’t new to Villa, not really. He’d been an academy graduate back in the mid-2000s, a proper homegrown talent who’d had two good seasons in claret and blue before Manchester City came calling; a squad player behind their real stars, never quite the difference-maker they’d hoped, and after two quiet years up north, he’d been shipped back to Villa this summer.

He’d nearly gone elsewhere; Derby had been circling, but Ventham’s return as manager had tipped it. Whitfield trusted the man who’d worked with him as a kid, and signed on as Villa’s new club captain.

To make room for him, Ventham had eased the previous captain, Grant Ashdown, out the door, loaned out, technically, rather than sold, which Ashdown probably didn’t mind much given where he’d landed: Nottingham Forest, a proper step up in prestige even in the Championship.

Ventham’s coaching results might have been patchy, but his contacts book clearly wasn’t. Alongside Whitfield, he’d also brought in Mauricio Peña from a mid-table La Liga side, a versatile South American full-back, comfortable on either flank, with the kind of pace and close control you don’t often find at this level for the fee Villa paid.

Of that summer’s crop, only two players genuinely impressed Saint. Whitfield was one, undeniable talent, real A-level potential by Scout’s Eye’s reckoning, but his training habits left plenty to be desired.

Whether two years on City’s bench had softened him, Saint couldn’t say for certain, but the drop-off from what he remembered of Whitfield as a teenager was obvious.

The other was Callum Loach, a young centre-back who’d arrived quietly and kept catching Saint’s eye for reasons that had nothing to do with defending. Loach graded out at A-level too, and the surprise wasn’t the potential itself, it was where it showed.

The lad had a genuinely dangerous header on him, and better distribution off his right foot than most of Villa’s actual midfielders.

Weeks of closer observation only confirmed it: Loach wasn’t just solid at the back, he had real craft going forward too, comfortable stepping into midfield with the ball, capable of the kind of driven finish you rarely see from a defender. He had an attacking streak that Ventham, wedded to a cautious, defense-first approach, had shown no interest in unlocking.

Taken as a group, Saint had to admit Ventham’s summer business had genuine substance. Whitfield gave Villa a proper focal point in midfield; Loach quietly strengthened a defense that had been the club’s biggest weakness for two straight seasons. On paper, Villa finally looked like a squad capable of pushing for promotion.

Capable, though, wasn’t the same as certain. This wasn’t a division short on ambition or quality; Norwich, Derby, Sheffield Wednesday, and Brighton were all building serious promotion pushes of their own that summer, some with considerably deeper pockets than Villa’s.

Getting out of the Championship was never going to be a formality, whatever the squad on paper suggested.

And right now, that squad on paper had a problem standing in the middle of the training pitch, jogging through a passing drill at about sixty percent effort.

Whitfield’s attitude hadn’t shifted an inch in a month, and it was exactly why Saint had just shouted himself hoarse at Villa’s own captain.

He wasn’t a boy anymore, not really, the past month had aged him in ways that had nothing to do with his actual age. He’d found a steel in himself that didn’t match twenty years on paper.

Ventham himself rarely took full sessions, a manager typically leads training once or twice a week at most, largely to check in on form, leaving the day-to-day grind to assistants. Except, of course, Ventham didn’t hand Saint anything at all.

Whatever role Saint carved out, he carved out himself, riding on the simple fact that as long as Sallow hadn’t been fully cast aside by Whitlock, Saint’s job was safe.

He’d led sessions before, plenty of them, with the academy sides, but first-team training was an entirely different animal. Forget the finer tactical points; even the sheer physical volume of a professional session bore no resemblance to youth-team work.

Coming into the first team properly, Saint had finally understood what professional football actually demanded. And, to his credit, he’d absorbed it fast. Two weeks of full involvement, and he had a working grasp of the squad. Another two, and he’d started actively directing sessions rather than just observing them.

Which brought him to Whitfield, mid-shout, red in the face, and not remotely intimidated by his own name on the club captain’s back.

Whitfield glanced over, jaw tight, and said nothing. Didn’t speed up either.

”Lee.” Pratt’s voice, close by. ”I’ll take it from here.”

This wasn’t the first time. Three days earlier, Saint had stopped a session outright over Whitfield’s effort levels, and the two of them had gone at it in front of the entire squad... a genuine flashpoint, the kind that gets talked about in every corner of a dressing room by the next morning.

Young as he was, and however completely Ventham froze him out, Saint was still Sallow’s man; untouchable, in practice, short of Sallow himself being pushed out entirely.

English football gave managers real teeth compared to the boardroom-heavy power structures common on the continent, but even here, Ventham couldn’t simply have Saint removed on his own authority. Not with Sallow’s name still attached to him.

”Understood,” Saint said, and didn’t argue with Pratt’s intervention. Truthfully, the clash with Whitfield hadn’t been an accident. Saint had wanted exactly this since every player in that squad needed to understand, early, that being ignored by the manager didn’t make him a soft touch.

It wasn’t always about being liked. Sometimes it was simpler than that: making sure people knew you weren’t easy to push around, especially at thirty, especially standing next to men twice your age who’d assumed, wrongly, that youth meant you could be managed.

Saint knew he still had to earn the rest the hard way, respect from players and staff alike wasn’t handed over because of a UEFA badge. But he was getting there.

Running real sessions, and running them well, was proof enough of that. And over these past weeks, the way people looked at him around the training ground had shifted, bit by bit, into something that looked a lot like respect.
