The Saint Maddox Odyssey

The referee’s final whistle brought Villa’s most-watched match of the season to a close.

1–3. The scoreline held. Villa, exhausted after their third goal, had spent the closing minutes simply seeing the match out, and even a spirited final push from Millwall couldn’t find a way through.

”Let’s give credit where it’s due... Villa finally end an eight-game winless run, and pick the biggest possible moment to do it.” Even grudgingly, the commentary had to acknowledge it.

”And that’s the first competitive win of Saint Maddox’s managerial career. First game in charge, down 1–0 at the break, and he turns it into a 3–1 win. Quite the way to start.”

”Right now, half the country’s asking the same question: what actually happened in that Villa dressing room at half-time?”

Nobody watching was going to get an answer today. Maybe a player would talk to the press eventually, months or years down the line. For now, the mystery would just have to sit there, unresolved.

Attention swung back to the touchline almost immediately, though, and this time for a different reason; Saint still hadn’t moved from the bench, even as Millwall’s manager made his way toward the tunnel for the customary post-match handshake.

Barrow, for his part, had visibly composed himself the moment the final whistle went; straightening his jacket, resetting his expression, the animated touchline figure from ten minutes earlier nowhere to be seen.

A defeat is a defeat, and Barrow knew exactly how to carry one publicly. He represented more than just himself out here; every young English manager still working to prove that his generation of the profession deserved to be taken seriously, and he wasn’t about to let a bad result undo that in front of the cameras.

’Bloody typical,’ Barrow thought privately, watching Saint still seated on the bench, apparently in no hurry to acknowledge him.

Pratt, thankfully, had more presence of mind in the moment; spotting Barrow waiting, he gave Saint a quiet nudge to remind him.

”Congratulations... deserved win,” Barrow said, extending a hand with as much grace as he could manage.

”Cheers.” Saint’s mind was clearly elsewhere as he shook it.

Barrow noticed the distraction, and whatever restraint he’d been holding onto slipped slightly at the edges; he let go of the handshake and turned away without waiting for anything further.

’What’s actually going on with him?’ For a second, Saint genuinely wondered what had put Barrow in such a mood; before realising, belatedly, that losing tends to do exactly that to most people.

Fortunately, whatever Barrow made of that odd, distracted handshake, he had no idea what was actually occupying Saint’s attention.

Because it wasn’t the result. Losing today would have handed Saint the perfect excuse to move against the players he’d already decided didn’t have a future at the club; a clean, defensible reason to send them down without any lingering doubt.

Winning instead had complicated things. Villa had won, and in the process, Saint had watched something genuinely unexpected unfold on that pitch.

Whitfield, specifically. Real quality, real experience, and if he could sustain even a fraction of what he’d shown in that second half, Villa’s whole season looked completely different.

Today was the proof. All three goals had run through him in some way, two of them direct assists. Whatever doubts Saint had carried about Whitfield’s attitude, his actual ability had never been in question; and today it showed in full.

Villa had been missing exactly this kind of creative outlet in midfield all season. Ventham’s instinct to build around Whitfield hadn’t been wrong. What had gone wrong was letting his attitude rot to the point where none of that ability ever showed up on matchdays.

Rocher and Lavelle, meanwhile, both had genuine creative range and end product, but neither was actually built to be the deep-lying playmaker this system needed. They were weapons of a different kind.

Lavelle came closer to filling that role than Rocher did, but wasting Rocher’s raw pace and dribbling ability by dropping him into a deeper, more controlling position would be a genuine mistake. His value was in running at defenders, not orchestrating from deep.

Both were still very young, Saint reminded himself. Rocher’s game ran almost entirely on instinct and heart right now; genuinely thrilling to watch, but raw. Lavelle needed time, minutes, experience to round out the more measured side of his game.

Genius comes in different shapes. Players with Rocher’s kind of raw, instinctive brilliance are genuinely rare; the game doesn’t produce many of them in any given generation. Players with Lavelle’s profile, technically excellent, needing only time and reps to mature, are considerably more common, even at the highest level.

Saint’s train of thought got cut off before he could go much further, because the press had already closed in around him; not warmly, but persistently. Whatever else they thought of him, he was today’s story either way.

A thirty-one-year-old manager, one day into the job, taking charge of a Championship club with real European pedigree, had more than enough built-in intrigue on its own. Add in the specific shape of today’s result; dreadful first half, three unanswered goals after the break, and it was the kind of story no outlet was going to pass up.

”Right... before anything else, I want to apologise to everyone here.” Saint got in ahead of the first question entirely, his expression carrying genuine sincerity.

”Apologise?” A ripple of confusion moved through the assembled press pack.

”Is this about the press conference walkout?” A few reporters exchanged glances, clearly assuming this was some kind of climb-down.

”Ha... reckon the kid’s finally rattled,” one reporter muttered to a colleague, the corner of his mouth twitching with barely-hidden satisfaction. Most of the pack seemed to share the same read: that the pressure had finally gotten to him.

Not everyone agreed, though. Ashwell, standing slightly apart from the main scrum, had a very different read on the man in front of him.

Walking out of your own unveiling press conference on day one, fully aware of exactly what backlash that would trigger, took a specific kind of nerve; the kind that didn’t crack this easily, in Ashwell’s experience of covering him.

He’d been right, as it turned out. Just as the pack leaned in expecting a climb-down, Saint spoke again.

”I’ve let all of you down today. I know how much you were all hoping to write about a proper Villa collapse, and instead I went and turned it into a win. My apologies for ruining the story you’d already written in your heads.” There was still that same trace of sincerity on his face, delivered completely straight.

Dead silence. Total silence, save for one man; and even Ashwell, this time, needed a second to process what he’d just heard.

The silence didn’t last, though. It curdled fast into something closer to fury, because every reporter standing there understood, almost simultaneously, exactly what had just happened to them.

Worse still, the insufferable man responsible hadn’t even given them the chance to fire back. Saint had already turned and walked off before a single follow-up question could land.
