The Saint Maddox Odyssey

”Come in.” The moment Saint said it, the door opened on a tall, imposing figure.

Whitfield stood a shade over six foot two, built solidly, with a weathered look that made him seem older than his years; the physical toll of a career that hadn’t gone quite the way it was supposed to.

Years earlier, he’d been the name everyone at Manchester City talked about, tipped as the eventual heir to their midfield. Two seasons of mostly bench duty later, he’d come back to Villa on Ventham’s personal recommendation.

If Saint was honest, that homecoming had been a mistake from the start; not for Villa’s sake necessarily, but for Whitfield’s own.

Whatever hunger had once made him City’s most exciting prospect had clearly gone soft somewhere along the way. If Villa’s own supporters hadn’t grown up watching him as a boy, half of them wouldn’t have recognised the player wearing that shirt now.

”You were meant to be reporting to the reserves this morning,” Saint said flatly, once he’d waved Whitfield into the chair opposite.

Whitfield’s laziness had grated on Saint from the very start of the season, and Ventham’s decision to hand him the captaincy anyway had only made it worse. There’d been nothing Saint could do about it at the time, of course; not as a sidelined assistant with no real say.

Whitfield had come in braced for exactly this. Over a decade in professional football teaches a player how to read a summons like this one, and after last night’s win, he’d already worked out this wasn’t going to be a simple dressing-down.

”But last night changed my thinking. I’m willing to give you a chance.” Saint’s next line confirmed exactly what Whitfield had suspected.

”That’s the offer. What you do with it is on you.” Saint let the silence sit for a moment before continuing.

”Two years left on your contract. That doesn’t change. If you want out at the end of this season, that’s a conversation you and I have; not one you have with an agent behind my back.”

”You might be thinking English clubs don’t give their managers much real say over that kind of thing. Or that I won’t last long enough in this job for it to matter anyway.”

”But here’s the actual question; are you willing to gamble what’s left of your career on that bet?” Saint held his eye as he said it.

”No. I’m not.” Whitfield shook his head, meeting Saint’s gaze and not liking what he found there.

However Saint had actually landed this job, Whitfield knew enough about the club’s internal politics to understand the shape of it; Sallow’s man, brought in through a boardroom fight that had nothing to do with football.

Maybe Saint really was just a pawn in someone else’s power struggle, destined to be discarded the moment results turned. But right now, pawn or not, he was the man holding Whitfield’s playing time in his hands; and that was the only fact that actually mattered this morning.

And Saint was right about the other part too. Whatever ambition had carried Whitfield to City had long since curdled into something closer to resignation; the quiet acceptance that his best years were behind him, and that whatever came next would be about coasting out the string, not chasing anything higher.

Money wasn’t really the issue either. Whitfield could walk into a comfortable deal somewhere smaller and be treated like a returning hero, paid handsomely for having once played at the top. That option would always be there.

”Fabian... have you thought about what it actually looks like if you coast out this contract the way you’ve been playing? What the Villa fans who used to love watching you will think? What kind of interest you’ll actually get from anywhere else, playing like this?” Saint’s tone didn’t soften as he said it.

Players chase two things above all else; reputation and money, and Whitfield had already spent the better part of his prime on this exact question. He’d first arrived at Villa Park as a teenager, come up through the academy, and given the club five genuinely good years before City came calling.

Those five years had made him a genuine fan favourite; the kind of player supporters build chants around.

Right now, though, that same fanbase could barely stand to watch him.

Whitfield still hadn’t spoken, but something in his expression told Saint the words had landed properly.

If the threat alone had been enough to force Whitfield’s hand out of self-preservation, what came next tipped it fully into something closer to genuine buy-in.

”And I’ll make you a promise in return; give me your full effort between now and the end of the season, and I’ll personally make sure the club lets you leave cleanly, no obstacles, whenever you decide it’s time.” Saint played his final card.

Saint had every confidence he could eventually build something real here, but that took time, and time required stability first. Right now, keeping this job at all mattered more than any single player’s long-term future, Whitfield included.

”Understood. I know what I need to do.” Whitfield studied Saint for a long moment before finally saying it.

”Good. Sounds like we’re going to work well together.” Saint stood and extended a hand.

He immediately regretted standing up, though, Whitfield had a good five inches on him, and the difference was suddenly, awkwardly obvious.

Once Whitfield left, Saint didn’t move from his desk. That conversation had only been the opening one. Half an hour later, there was another knock.

Ben Conlan. Of everyone in this squad, Conlan was the player Saint had the most genuine long-term belief in; A-level potential, B-level current ability, but what actually caught Saint’s attention wasn’t the numbers. It was the way Conlan competed.

In Saint’s read of this squad, Conlan was the closest thing to a natural captain in the building; relentless work rate, total refusal to give up on a lost cause, exactly the kind of temperament a rebuild needed at its core.

The conversation itself was straightforward. Saint didn’t hide his genuine regard for him, and Conlan, in turn, responded to it honestly.

Conlan had learned the hard way, through his own falling-out with a previous club, exactly how rare it was to have a manager who actually rated you openly. Young as Saint was, everything he’d shown so far had earned enough trust for Conlan to give this a real go.

Half an hour after sending Conlan out, a third player knocked.

Callum Loach.

If Loach had come up through a South American academy, his instincts on the pitch would have made perfect sense. That he was thoroughly English-born, developed through Villa’s own system, made the attacking streak in his game genuinely unusual.

”We’re moving to a back four going forward, and you’ll get license to push forward within that shape. But there’s one condition.” Loach’s uncontrollable urge to attack was, at once, his greatest strength and his biggest liability.

Loach, by any measure, had the physical profile of a top-flight defender; six foot two, genuinely excellent athleticism, B-level current ability by Scout’s Eye’s reading. It was a genuine waste that a player of his caliber had spent this much of the season out of position in a back three that didn’t suit him.

”Three forward runs a game. Maximum. No more than that.” Restraint mattered more than raw talent here; too little discipline, and the whole structure behind him collapsed.

A defender who attacks is a genuine weapon, when it’s controlled properly; but Loach wasn’t yet the finished article that could get away with doing it on instinct alone. If Saint wanted to actually use that instinct rather than coach it out of him, he needed to build the rest of the system to cover for it.
