The Saint Maddox Odyssey

Saint’s first match in charge of the U21s started with a defeat. He’d kept his predecessor’s tactics and starting eleven intact for that opening game; reasonable enough, given the man had only been poached because the setup was already working.

Except it clearly wasn’t working under Saint’s hands, not yet. Confusion was the word that kept coming to mind watching it back; players executing shapes that had made sense under someone else’s voice and looking lost running them under his.

The local press gave it a paragraph. Given the result, nobody expected kindness.

”A barely thirty-year-old holding a UEFA A Licence is one thing. Being trusted to actually run a youth side is quite another; and on this evidence, Villa have jumped the gun,” wrote Mark Ashwell in the Midlands Sports Gazette.

Villa’s own message boards weren’t much kinder. A vocal contingent of fans had decided the whole appointment was a stunt; a novelty coach getting handed real young careers to gamble with.

Saint couldn’t have cared less. Even if he had, there wasn’t much he could do about it since youth football barely registered outside a small, obsessive corner of the fanbase, which meant the actual pressure on him was minimal.

None of the noise affected him, because his attention was entirely elsewhere: rebuilding the U21s’ entire tactical identity from scratch. That opening loss wasn’t an accident. It was the visible cost of change already underway.

Publicly, he’d kept the old shape and the old team sheet for one match. In training, an entirely different plan had already begun taking root.

Rocher and Lavelle were being rebuilt as the attacking core of the side. Rami had already locked down a starting spot at centre-back.

The number 10 role itself wasn’t really an Italian or a Spanish invention, whatever people liked to claim; it was Wenger, working with Robert Pires at Arsenal, who’d properly defined the modern version of it in the English game.

Pires had topped the assist charts playing in exactly that kind of free role the previous season, picked up the Footballer of the Year award for it, and helped drag Arsenal to an unbeaten league title in the process. If you wanted to know what the position actually looked like when it worked, that was the reference point.

In Villa’s U21 setup, both Lavelle and Rocher were nominally wide players. But of the two, Rocher playing out on the touchline felt like a genuine waste of what he actually had.

His real weapon was pace and a dribble that verged on unfair. Saint had seen, in another life, exactly what that kind of dribbling became at full maturity; the sort of winger who, in tandem with the right partner on the opposite flank, could tear through a defence as good as any in Europe and leave it with no real answer.

Rocher, right now, was a much rougher version of that same profile. But the shape of it was already there if you knew where to look.

The previous U21 coach had spent months trying to coach that instinct out of him; turn him into a more conventional wide player, more disciplined, less selfish with the ball. It had mostly just gotten Rocher benched.

Lavelle’s limitation was simpler: height. A year younger than Rocher, and barely five foot four; not an ideal build for a player who lived in tight spaces and physical duels.

Rami’s issue had been different again; years of playing football on rough pitches with no real coaching had left him with habits that took real, patient correction, though the improvement over a few months of proper training had already been considerable.

”Antoine, use the pace and the footwork, that’s the gift; but once you’re past your man, make a decision. Pass or shoot. Don’t dawdle in that final moment.” That was Saint’s one real demand of Rocher.

The old regime’s benching had at least left one mark: Rocher understood, now, that greed with the ball had consequences.

”Won’t let you down, boss.” Rocher wasn’t stupid. He knew exactly how thin the margin was between staying in Saint’s plans and drifting back out of them.

”Yannick... watch that footage I gave you properly this time.” Saint turned to Lavelle next.

On his very first day back with the group, Saint had handed Lavelle a DVD: Pires’s best highlights from that Arsenal title-winning campaign, cued up and ready.

Long before the results had ever shown it, Saint had already been quietly building the framework; shaping exactly how he intended to bring all three of his French signings up to speed.

Nothing about that process was going to be smooth. All three had graded out at S-level potential under Scout’s Eye; the very top tier, and in the world Saint remembered, all three had gone on to significant careers.

But a year and a half of close observation had taught him something the system itself didn’t spell out: potential wasn’t flat. There were degrees within S-level itself.

Of the three, Rocher was the one with genuine top-tier, first-XI-at-a-superclub ceiling. Lavelle and Rami, for all their talent, were more likely to top out as very good squad players at that level, real quality, but a tier below true superstardom.

Potential set the ceiling. Ability was what a player actually built underneath it. And between those two things sat a mess of other variables; physical limitations like Lavelle’s height, plus mentality, injuries, timing, luck, all of it capable of deciding whether a gift ever turned into a career.

Rami’s case was its own puzzle. Seventeen years old, plucked out of Corsica and dropped into English football; a country that, if anything, had no shortage of promising young centre-backs already competing for the same pathway.

A few days of close observation, though, told Saint something didn’t quite match what he remembered. He’d seen footage of the version of Rami from his old life, and this one carried himself differently.

The Rami he remembered had been a genuinely adventurous centre-back, not quite a South American-style ball-carrier bursting forward at every opportunity, but close. This Rami showed none of that instinct yet.

A centre-back stepping forward is a genuine gamble; read it right, and you disrupt the opponent’s structure and create something out of nothing; read it wrong, and you’ve handed the other side a two-on-one the other way.

At seventeen, Rami already stood close to six foot six, built like a proper defender rather than a lanky teenager still growing into his frame. Weeks of watching him confirmed it further; his positional sense and reading of where the ball would drop were already well ahead of his age.

”If he keeps developing at this rate, Aldo’s a genuine top-level centre-back in the making,” Cadman admitted, clearly impressed despite himself.

Rocher and Lavelle had made an equal impression on the young Italian-trained coach; especially once he learned all three had been personally scouted and signed by Saint himself, in France, months before either of them had set foot at Villa.

The three had moved out of Saint’s house once he’d taken over the U21s officially, though they still lived together; modest wages meant modest options, and the flat Saint had originally arranged for them was good enough, and close enough to the training ground, that none of them had seen much reason to move.
