The Saint Maddox Odyssey

An assistant coach’s job, in theory, is to lighten the head coach’s load: run sessions, track player form, keep tabs not just on the first team but the reserves and academy too. Done well, a good assistant’s fingerprints are all over a club, and the role sits closer to the manager’s chair than any other position in the building.

Football history is full of men who made that exact jump. Mourinho spent years as an assistant and translator before he ever got his own dugout.

André Villas-Boas came up the same way; data and scouting long before tactics boards with his name on them. Roberto Di Matteo, a player first, still cut his managerial teeth as a number two before Chelsea trusted him with the top job. Sean Dyche, further down the pyramid, built his reputation the same patient way.

For a long time, Saint’s position as assistant felt like real proximity to that goal, even though everyone in the building knew the only reason he had the job at all was Sallow.

That same reason made everything harder, too. His first proper sit-down with Ventham had been miserable; the manager barely acknowledged he was in the room.

”Boss, I’ve put together some notes on the squad; where I think we need help.” Second meeting, and Saint arrived with a folder he’d spent real time on.

”Busy right now. Leave it there.” Ventham didn’t look up.

Saint didn’t push it. He set the folder down and left. Ventham didn’t glance at it again until well after the door had shut, and even then, he simply picked it up and tossed it aside, onto a pile of paperwork left behind by the previous manager.

New in the job, new office, old clutter he hadn’t got round to clearing.

Saint never found out what happened to it. He’d more or less expected as much anyway. He hadn’t written it for Ventham. He’d written it because doing the job properly mattered to him, whether or not anyone read the results.

He wasn’t naive about it, either. One meeting had told him everything he needed to know about how Ventham saw him: not a colleague, not someone to be trusted, but a problem inherited from someone else’s power play.

Becoming a manager was the goal the moment the system first spoke to him. Years in, he hadn’t wavered from it once. He’d assumed it would take a long, patient climb, and he’d braced himself for exactly that. What he hadn’t planned for was how fast the ground could shift underneath him.

Whitlock’s arrival as chairman the previous year, and Pedmore’s appointment on top of Sallow, had thrown the whole club’s internal balance into chaos. And Sallow, stripped of most of his real authority, wasn’t about to just accept it.

Saint understood exactly what he’d become in that fight: a small, deliberate annoyance, planted in Ventham’s coaching staff mostly to needle Pedmore and Ventham both. That wasn’t flattering. But it was also, undeniably, a door; and doors, at thirty years old with no playing career to fall back on, didn’t come along often.

Because that was the other obstacle, and arguably the bigger one: his age. Thirty years old, holding a UEFA A Licence... something unheard of anywhere in European football before him. It had earned him a little notice, mostly local.

Villa wasn’t a club whose news traveled far outside the Midlands, and ”youngest assistant coach in English football” was the kind of headline that stayed a headline and nothing more.

It was also, if he was honest, half the reason Ventham couldn’t stand him. Saint had walked into the first-team staff the day after Ventham himself arrived, and the attention that came with a thirty-year-old assistant coach hadn’t gone unnoticed in a dressing room that was supposed to be entirely about the new manager.

Pratt, watching Saint come out of that meeting so quickly, gave his shoulder a quiet pat on the way past. The whole staff knew the shape of it by now. They knew Saint was Sallow’s man, planted in Ventham’s setup, and he was collateral in a fight that had nothing to do with him personally.

Saint didn’t mind the label. If he wanted to climb, Sallow’s coattails were, for now, the only ones worth holding.

So instead of shrinking from it, he leaned in. After a brief word with Pratt, he made straight for Sallow’s office. Pedmore had taken most of Sallow’s real authority, true, but not all of it.

There were still things Sallow could push through on his own signature, and Saint had one specific thing in mind: free agents, cut-price kids, players nobody else was watching closely enough to want.

He’d had his eye on a couple of names for a while.

A tidy young French forward, barely known outside Ligue 2, recently released after a growth-spurt scare left one club convinced he’d never fill out physically. But Saint knew otherwise.

And a winger, out of contract with a fourth-tier French side after a release clause dispute nobody outside that division had even noticed. Move fast, and either one was there for the taking, no fee required.

”You’re certain?” Sallow studied him carefully.

”Yes. And I’d like to go to France myself to close it.”

Sallow knew, better than anyone, exactly how thin the ice under him had grown. Years without real progress had worn Whitlock’s patience down to nothing; that was the whole reason Pedmore existed now, carved straight out of Sallow’s own job description. Sallow hadn’t seen it coming, and he hadn’t been ready for it.

Slotting Saint into the first-team staff had been, at most, meant as a minor irritant aimed at Pedmore and Ventham. What Sallow hadn’t expected was for the twenty-year-old he’d more or less taken in off the street to arrive with genuine ambition l, and a genuine plan.

Listening to Saint lay it out, Sallow found himself looking at him with something close to disbelief. Years passed, and he still hadn’t fully taken the measure of this kid.

It was, on its face, a mad idea. Years ago, hearing it, Sallow might have written it off as grief still working its way through Saint’s system after the crash. But things were different now. Sallow had nowhere left to retreat to, not unless he was willing to hand back what little power remained and simply walk away from Villa altogether.

Was he willing to do that? Not remotely. He’d given too much to this club, even if none of it had dragged Villa back to where it used to belong.

And Villa had belonged somewhere, once. This wasn’t some anonymous club playing out the string. League champions, seven times over. European champions in 1982, beating the odds against Bayern Munich in Rotterdam.

Whatever state the club was in now, that history was real, and it was exactly the kind of history a chairman like Whitlock, and a director like Sallow, still had every reason to want back.
