Chapter 1207: Chapter 22: This Is the Wisdom of the King

On that afternoon at four o’clock, inside the Iron Hand Mansion.

Gradually, people seeped from the courtyard, while Su Xiao was sitting behind a desk, with dozens of sheets of parchment placed before him.

”So, you were the last person to see the Little Princess?”

Su Xiao tossed aside the parchment in his hand and looked at the maiden kneeling on the ground ahead of him.

”Yes, my lord.”

The maiden was very nervous, breathing rapidly, with her heart rate surging to over 140 beats per minute; she was deliberately concealing some things.

”Come.”

Su Xiao spoke, and two guards entered the room. He gestured, making the two guards look somewhat bewildered, as did the kneeling maiden.

”My lord, specifically how should we...”

One guard spoke softly, choosing his words very cautiously.

”Kill her.”

”Huh.”

The two guards were stunned, while the maiden kneeled on the ground.

”I... I only stole the princess’s headpiece. I don’t need to die for that, do I, sob...”

It was apparent that what the maiden was desperately hiding was this trivial matter.

”Take her away.”

Su Xiao gently rubbed his forehead; he had already gathered many similar useless clues.

”So, my lord, do you want her...”

One guard placed his hand near his throat, making a gesture as if to slit a throat.

”Imprison her.”

Su Xiao leaned back in his seat; this was the most troublesome case he had ever encountered, without exception. So far, he hadn’t found any clue; the Little Princess seemed to be killed by a ’Ghost’, leaving no trace at the scene.

Just as Su Xiao was racking his brains, a member of the Forbidden Guard pushed the door open.

”My lord, we’ve got a clue.”

A member of the Forbidden Guard handed over a wooden barrel as thick as an arm to Su Xiao, bearing the emblem of the Royal Family, indicating its confidential nature.

Su Xiao opened the barrel, and a scroll of parchment slipped out. Upon seeing its content, Su Xiao’s confusion was instantly cleared.

Following the investigation led by the detective named ’Nonista Ford’, it was not another person who killed the Little Princess but rather Commander Kalon.

Su Xiao had previously suspected Commander Kalon, but the height difference between him and the weapon and murderer was significant.

Su Xiao still remembered Commander Kalon’s dying gaze; it was one of deep resignation and anger.

Through the detective’s textual description, Su Xiao understood what happened. At the time of the incident, Commander Kalon bowed behind the Little Princess and used a hastily acquired weapon to pierce her chest.

As for why the Little Princess didn’t scream, the reason was she covered her mouth, enduring the pain as much as possible.

When Su Xiao read the description ’the Little Princess covered her mouth’, his thought was to bring the detective over, giving them a chance to reorganize their language and recount the story once more before him.

However, upon seeing the subsequent description by the detective, Su Xiao dismissed this thought, realizing the detective was a mastermind of immersive reasoning.

Su Xiao’s further observations revealed that the 13-year-old Little Princess was pregnant! What’s even more absurd is that her mother was also pregnant, despite the Old King being 65, which basically ruled out any hardware feasibility.

A pair of pregnant mother and daughter, who could their lover be? Normally, the likelihood would not favor it being the same person, yet given this world’s openness, this possibility cannot be excluded. The ’information volume’ here was too vast.

”I see... so that’s how it is.”

Su Xiao’s mind suddenly clarified; this was never a murder case, but rather someone scripting and directing a play.

The Little Princess and Queen intentionally died in the rear garden; the Little Princess’s death aimed to attract Su Xiao, while the Queen’s poisoning delayed matters—they were pawns, and the simultaneously deceased Commander Kalon was a victim forced into the act; afterwards, the bodies of his family were found in a sewage ditch, all dead neatly.

A mother and daughter used their lives to enact this play, with two crucial points: one being the location of the play (Royal Palace), and the other the timing of the play (when the Old King was hosting all powerful ministers, wealthy merchants, princesses, princes, and so on).

At this timing, when a Royal Family member was attacked in the rear garden of the Royal Palace, Su Xiao, as Iron Hand, would definitely arrive on the scene immediately, thus pulling him away from the Old King’s side.

The opponent’s main objective had already become apparent, which was to assassinate the Old King and all the powerful ministers, wealthy merchants, princes, and princesses in the banquet hall.

If these people died simultaneously, then the power structure of the Holy Sodding Kingdom would instantaneously crumple, possibly leading to the kingdom’s collapse.

The moment the Old King learned the Little Princess was attacked, he immediately issued an order for Kingdom’s Army Commander Herschel to head to the frontline, feeling intuitively that something was amiss.

Herschel had followed the Old King for many years; he immediately grasped the Old King’s meaning, thus instead of heading straight to the frontline upon leaving the banquet hall, he covertly summoned all Forbidden Guards using a secret order the Old King had discreetly given. The five Forbidden Guards waiting at the banquet hall door for Su Xiao were but a fraction of them.

After dispatching Herschel, the Old King’s next actions indeed thwarted the assailant’s plans entirely—sending Joe Valentine to block off the Royal Capital and issuing a secret directive, stating if he happened to die today, the Big Prince would temporarily ascend the throne.

Joe Valentine wasn’t merely going to seal off the Royal Capital; he managed all the officials, knowing their functions, and was actually safeguarding against the collapse of the power system.

The Old King’s final slightly ’out of line’ action was knocking over his own glass of poisoned wine. For this cup of poison wine, those assassins had meticulously planned for 2 years, utterly failing the attempt on the King.

One must admit, wisdom indeed comes with age; the Old King’s non-attendance at the banquet hall’s main seat was already an unexpected move for the assassins, and while seated near Su Xiao and Herschel, the Old King would only drink wine from the jug that both Su Xiao and Herschel had previously drunk from, knowing both were formidable individuals with terrifying insight into toxins, plus his cup was the one Herschel had used before.

This series of spontaneous responses from the Old King left no chance for the assassins to act; they dared not launch a blatant attack on the Royal Palace, hence ’sacrificing’ the mother-daughter duo to distract Su Xiao and lure him away.

Their opportunity lasted merely a few minutes, yet during these few minutes, the banquet hall was surrounded by hundreds of Forbidden Guards.

Despite ruling the kingdom for over 40 years, the Old King, albeit an ordinary man, wasn’t easy prey; he was an Old Lion whom even Su Xiao slightly dreaded.

The mastermind orchestrating this event certainly had meticulous thoughts, such people are usually quite proud, thereby likely unable to tolerate such a complete failure.

”This old... lion.”

Su Xiao rested his elbows on the wooden desk, his hands clasped before him.

Right at this moment, Su Xiao suddenly stood up; he remembered a crucial point—that when the Old King announced the Little Princess’s murder, the first to speak wasn’t Herschel, nor was it Governor Joe Valentine, but rather the Kingdom Finance Officer, Rowen Harvey.

Even before the Old King gave any orders, Rowen Harvey whispered a few words in his ear, after which the Old King ordered Rowen Harvey to leave and handle the aftermath of the family’s confiscation.

Su Xiao was currently very eager to know what exactly Rowen Harvey said at that time. Although the confiscation was of significant importance, the Little Princess’s murder might incite unrest within the Royal Capital, affecting the confiscation of Elvi Anthony’s assets, the fact that Rowen Harvey was the first to propose leaving the banquet seemed suspicious.

The feeling appeared as if he was searching for a legitimate excuse to exit the banquet hall.

Although the Little Princess died at Commander Kalon’s hands, the true culprit was not Commander Kalon but the puppet master behind the scenes, and Su Xiao’s mission was to uncover the identity of this puppet master.
