Subject Zero: Faceless

Renner had the prisoner brought to a tent at the camp’s edge, empty but for a table, two chairs and a lamp, and she stood rather than take the second chair, and she put Rook where she’d put him at Corvale. Behind the prisoner’s shoulder, out of his line of sight, with the slate.

”Same terms as the relay building,” she said, before the guards brought him in. ”I ask. You read. You write me one word per answer and I don’t look at the slate until he’s finished talking. He doesn’t need to know what you’re doing. He’ll know anyway. They always do, eventually, and it doesn’t change the yield.”

It cost nothing last time. It won’t now.

”I know what it costs. I read Reyes’s column on the other thing and then I read yours on this one, and yours was blank.” She moved the lamp an inch. ”He was carrying a courier’s satchel and rations and a knife, and that makes him a courier until he says otherwise. That’s the only reason I’m allowed to do this with you at all. Corps has decided the Sight is the cheap instrument.”

The guards brought him in and sat him down and left. Cade had come up from the picket with the prisoner because he had taken him and did not hand things off, and stood inside the flap with his rifle slung and said no word to anyone.

The courier was a man of perhaps forty, weathered, in field clothes that had been good once and had been repaired more than once since. No insignia on the outside. Under the torn shoulder seam, Rook knew without needing to see it, a quartered black diamond, thread gone stiff. A satchel had come off him at the picket, and Renner had it on the table under her hand, unopened, where he could see her not opening it.

He looked at Renner. He looked at the tent. Then, unhurried, he turned his head and looked over his shoulder at the mask, and Rook let the Sight go where his attention had gone.

Calm. He’d expected calm. What came under it was the thing Cade had meant by the look: the courier looked at the mask as a technician looks at a returned piece of equipment — for damage, for wear, for whether it still answered to the settings it had left with.

”Zero,” the courier said, to the mask. His voice was quiet, accented, the vowels sitting where a Dominion tongue put them. ”They’ve kept you well. That’s something.”

”Face front.” Renner didn’t raise her voice. The courier faced front. ”Your name.”

Silence.

”Your unit.”

Silence. The stylus stayed where it was; there was nothing to weigh.

”You came up a slope last night behind a device that stopped a Class II output at thirty yards. You set it down at exactly the range you needed and no closer. You’d measured that range before you came.” Renner let it sit. ”Where did you measure it.”

”The compound.” The courier said it simply. ”There were eleven years of measurements in the compound. You took the slates you could carry. You left the rest in the walls.”

True.

”The device.”

”Is ours. Built from what we know.” He shrugged, a small movement, the restraints allowing it. ”You keep wards to hold us out. We build the other thing. It isn’t difficult, once you know what you’re keeping out.”

The stylus did not move. There was nothing on it to correct.

”What’s in the valley.”

Silence again, and this time the Sight gave him something under it. The man deciding. Not whether to lie — whether to answer at all. He decided.

”Forty-Five,” the courier said.

Rook’s hand stopped over the slate.

He had read that number once, on a water-damaged slate with a colonel standing over his shoulder, in a records room at the base where he’d been processed. Transfer authorization. Cycle 45. Continuation, Phase III calibration protocol. Destination [REDACTED]. Pending Board ratification. Never signed, the colonel had said, because the man who could sign it had stopped existing before the paperwork reached him. A dead order. The plan behind it open; the order itself closed.

This story has been taken without authorization. Report any sightings.

”Forty-Five,” Renner repeated, level as a clerk. ”Say the rest.”

”There isn’t a rest. Forty-Five was authorized. It was never cancelled.” The courier looked at the lamp rather than at her. ”Interrupted. Your convoy interrupted it. Everything since has been the continuation.”

His hand was steady on the stylus, and the steadiness was the worst of it: the Sight returned no lie because there was none.

”Continuation of what.”

Silence. Under it, the same steadiness. He had said what he had decided to say and the rest of him had closed like a door.

Renner said, ”Enough,” in the voice she’d used at a ford with a dead man’s compass in her fist. The guards took him out. Cade went after them, and paused at the flap, and looked at the mask, and said, ”He knew your number,” and went.

Renner waited until the tent held the two of them and the satchel.

”You know what Forty-Five is.”

A transfer authorization. From the records the extraction recovered. The colonel at my intake base showed it to me the second day. It scheduled me for four more processing cycles at a second facility, destination redacted, purpose continuation of a Phase III calibration protocol. He stopped, then wrote the rest. It was never signed. The person who could sign it died when the compound fell. That’s what I was told.

Renner read it twice. ”That’s what the record says. It’s in your intake file, the ordinary part; I’ve read it.” She set her hand on the satchel and still didn’t open it. ”He said never cancelled. Under your Sight.”

He believed it.

”People believe wrong things with their whole chest. That’s the limit of your instrument and I’ve never pretended otherwise.” She was quiet a moment. ”But there’s a version where he’s right and the record’s right at the same time, and it’s this: the man who could sign it died, and somebody else signed it. Later. Under a different roof.” She looked at the mask. ”In which case the valley isn’t a staging ground and it isn’t a camp. It’s a destination.”

He didn’t write anything. The word redacted sat where the destination should have been, on a slate he had read once and never forgotten.

”I’m going to tell you something now that I’m cleared to tell you as of this morning and that I’d have told you yesterday if I’d been cleared yesterday, because I told you a thing at the door of a relay building once and you’ve never let me forget the timing.” Renner took her hand off the satchel. ”The colonel’s tasking is to neutralize the valley. Mine is to recover the archive intact.”

The archive.

”Corps’s word.” She said it as if she disliked it. ”The records annex outside the provincial garrison — the one emptied of specific material and nothing else touched. The depot two provinces west. Both held Foundry-recovered paper, sorted by cycle number, waiting on a migration that never finished. The remnants took it. Everything they could carry, as far as Corps can tell. Several hundred documents, and Corps doesn’t know what’s in most of them because half were never read before they were boxed. Corps wants them back. Intact. Before anything in that valley decides it would rather burn them than lose them.” She let that land. ”That’s why I’m here. That’s why there’s an intelligence lead on an operation that could have been run as a straight clearance. Corps isn’t in this valley for the valley.”

They want me. Corps wants paper.

”That’s the shape of it. I’ve had a board’s worth of months to decide what I’d do differently if I ever got a second chance to stand near you. This is the thing.” She picked up the satchel at last, and hung it from her shoulder, and did not open it in front of him. ”This stays with me until I’ve read it. If there’s anything in it that touches you, you’ll hear it from me first. That’s the other thing.”

He found Sela in the tent Marrow had allotted her. A cot, a folding table, her two slates and the notebook whose cover was soft at the corners. She looked up from the notebook and closed it, and read enough off his stillness to put the pen down as well.

”Sit,” she said. ”You’ve got a look I’ve seen twice. Once at intake, once on a roof.”

He sat. He wrote it out for her plain, because she had earned plain. The courier, the calm, the number. He watched her read Forty-Five and watched her go still.

”He said it to your face.”

To the back of my mask. Under the Sight. It was true. He believed it was never cancelled.

She was quiet for a long moment. ”I learned about that second facility from you,” she said finally, ”before command said a word of it to me. You walked out of that records room the second night and wrote it on a slate for me because nobody had told me there was a slate to read, and I was angry enough about that to remember the exact wording. Continuation.” Her hands had found the notebook’s cover and were resting on it. ”It was a dead order, Rook. The colonel said so. It was the one piece of your file I could hold as finished.”

Renner thinks someone signed it later. Under a different roof.

Sela read that and didn’t answer it at once. He saw her reach for something and stop — the same stop he’d watched from her on a roof, the sentence that got as far as its own edge and held there.

”A cycle that was authorized and never closed,” she said slowly, and stopped there, and he understood that she had reached the end of what she knew and was refusing to guess past it.

He had a word for a cycle like that. A records clerk had given it to him across a counter and then wished she hadn’t, and the same clerk had told him, in the same fluent sentence, what such a cycle required for routing. And he had heard those two words a second time on a roof, from the woman across this table, about a slip she had signed without knowing where it went. He held the pieces side by side. He didn’t write either of them. She opened the notebook, uncapped the pen, and wrote a line he didn’t read and put a date beside it, the small habit she’d told him once she kept for anything she wanted to be able to prove she had thought at the time. Then she capped the pen.

”Go and let Osei count you,” she said. ”She’ll have noticed you’re short.”
