Subject Zero: Faceless

The two who came off the fence line alive gave up their names before they gave up anything useful, and gave up the rest over the three days that followed in pieces too small to matter individually. A supply route here, a rendezvous protocol there, nothing that resolved into a location until the third day, when the captive, worn down less by pressure than by his own growing certainty that his handlers had already written him off, finally named a valley two provinces north he called only ”the staging ground.”

The third had a name too, taken off a body by a records clerk who had not been told where it came from. Nobody asked Rook to attend that part of the paperwork, and nobody explained why not.

Thorne brought the report to Rook himself, in person, as he’d brought every real thing since the archive test. ”Corps cross-referenced it against the threat-assessment officer’s own data from the northern-territories briefing. It matches a supply corridor they’d already flagged as active but unconfirmed.” He set the slate down without ceremony. ”This isn’t background noise anymore. This is a location, corroborated by two independent sources, less than a week after someone tried to walk you out of this compound in restraints.”

He set a second sheet beside the first before Rook could answer, and his voice didn’t change register for it. ”There’s an uglier question underneath this one. Three outsiders crossed two provinces, reached a compound most of the Accord doesn’t know exists, and put a dampening tool against the one seam of ward nearest where you sleep. Inside a season of your arrival. Your room assignment lives in twelve documents. All internal. All signed for. They didn’t scout that from a treeline; someone with access moved it outward.” He tapped the sheet once. ”You gave me the corroboration for that standing at the fence, and there is no line on this form where it can go. I’ve given Corps the list of the twelve on the strength of the window alone. Until one of them can be shown to have traveled, I’m carrying the question as open, and I’ve noticed where else that word turns up in this building’s filing.”

Open. Like a cycle nobody’s closed.

”Like that,” Thorne said, and didn’t take it further.

So Corps moves on it.

”Corps moves on it. And they want you moving with them. Not as an asset held in reserve this time. As the reason the operation exists at all. They tried to take you once. Corps’ position is that waiting for a second attempt on their schedule instead of Meridian’s isn’t a risk worth accepting twice.”

How much of this is about stopping them, and how much is about proving something to whoever’s still watching my file from above your own authority.

Thorne didn’t answer that quickly. ”Both. I’d be lying if I told you it was only the first one.” He faced the mask squarely. ”Whoever’s above me hasn’t asked me to sell you on this. They’ve asked me to tell you plainly and let you decide. That’s the one thing I can still promise, even now.”

Then I’m deciding. I’ll go.

”I never doubted you would. I’d have respected you for hesitating anyway.”

Adair arrived the same afternoon, ahead of her own council session’s actual conclusion, to deliver one piece of it in person rather than let him hear it filed secondhand. ”The council voted three days ago. Partial disclosure. The Accord’s citizens will be told an organized threat exists and is being actively addressed, without operational specifics, without your name, without anything that turns you into a headline instead of a policy.” She laid it out whole. ”It’s not everything I argued for. It’s more than the faction that wanted this buried entirely was willing to give without a fight. I wanted you to hear the actual shape of it from me, same as I promised you after the briefing.”

Thank you for keeping that promise.

”Don’t thank me yet. You’re the reason the vote happened at all, and I don’t know yet whether that’s a debt or a cost to you.” She left it there, unresolved.

Mabry found him at the records counter one last time before the transport was due, sliding a small, official-looking form across rather than saying anything first. ”Standing authorization. Your credential stays active while you’re deployed. Compliance has it down for suspension pending the board, and the board can’t sit while you’re three provinces north, and somebody still has to be able to pull your own status updates without routing them through a counter you can’t walk to.” She said it briskly, professional. ”I kept the slip of paper. The one you wrote your name on for me, the week you first chose it.”

It matters.

”Good.” She didn’t offer anything more sentimental than that.

Calen caught him at the motor pool, characteristically unceremonious. ”Locker’s cleared, kit’s packed, and I told the quartermaster not to give you the substandard boots again. Maintenance filed for a new stop bolt on your window frame, by the way. I marked it low priority.” She let one beat say she knew precisely what she was leaving unbolted. ”Good luck out there, Rook. Come back and tell me the numbers on those doors turned out to mean something after all.”

If I find out, you’ll be the first to hear it.

”I’d better be.”

Sela walked him to the transport herself, as she had once before, on a different road, outside a different gate. Her orders had come through that morning. Attached to his deployment, the arrangement she’d fought for once and never had to fight for again. She didn’t need to tell him she was coming. He’d known it the moment Thorne said Corps wanted him moving with them, the same certainty he’d have had about the sun rising on schedule.

”Same road we walked out of intake on,” she said, at the transport’s open hatch. ”Different reason this time. Better one, I’d like to think, even with everything that’s still sitting unresolved between the two of us.”

The roof. Your earlier subject. Whatever you still haven’t told me.

”That conversation isn’t finished. It’s just moving with us instead of staying behind.”

There’s a piece of it that’s mine, and I should have written it down weeks ago.

”Write it now, then.”

A woman two towns north of Halstead has been telling people she dreams of a man with no face. I heard it three times in one market from three separate mouths, and two of them landed on the same word for how it feels to her, and neither had any reason to compare notes with the other. He stopped, and made himself put down the rest of it. If a folded page in a dead man’s kit can carry my room number across two provinces, then a story in a market can carry hers.

She didn’t answer for long enough that he knew she’d gone the whole way through it.

”You’ve been holding that since before the fence.”

Since a stall in Halstead. The fence only changed what it costs to keep holding it.

”Then it goes somewhere I can reach it.” She wrote something short on her own slate and didn’t show him what. ”Not a report. Nothing routes through Compliance with your name on it this week. But if we come back off this and that place is still a name on a map with no pin in it, I’d rather two of us knew it than one.”

Cotter’s Bend.

”Cotter’s Bend,” she said, and put the slate away.

She stayed facing the mask a moment before she went on. ”I meant what I said up there. I’ll be here tomorrow, and the day after that, and every day after that for as long as this posting keeps assigning me to you. A transport doesn’t change that math. It just changes the scenery it happens in.”

You could have asked for a different assignment. Somewhere that isn’t wherever this ends up leading.

”I could have. I didn’t want one.” She said it simply. ”I’ve spent this entire posting watching you figure out, piece by piece, what you actually have to lose now. I’d rather be one of the reasons than read about the rest of it in somebody else’s after-action report.”

Fair enough.

”It’s more than fair. It’s the only version of this I’d have agreed to.” She stepped up into the truck bed ahead of him, settling onto the bench across from where he’d sit, and for a moment let the practiced composure slip just enough to show him the weight underneath it, her own face and not the handler of record’s, for exactly as long as the look lasted.

He stood at the hatch a moment before climbing in. None of what this posting had handed him — a name carried out into the open, a clerk’s kept slip of paper, a woman from the town next door who’d decided one bad morning wasn’t reason enough to stop coming back — had been on any file he’d been issued at intake.

He climbed into the truck bed the way he once had at the very start of everything, the canvas hood overhead humming with the same low Core-cycled thrum he had never found the words to describe as anything but half-familiar. Sela sat across from him. The gate cleared them without slowing the convoy.

Outside the canvas flap, the Directorate posting fell away behind them in pieces. The numbered wing, the motor pool, the fence line where a Core-dampening tool had hummed against a ward five days ago. And then it was gone, and there was only road, and a sealed order riding in Thorne’s own courier pouch that neither of them had been shown yet.

Rook. Ashfall-Zero. Whichever name this next posting decides to use.

The order came at last, handed forward once the convoy cleared the last checkpoint, and he read it the way he’d read every order that had ever changed the shape of his life. Once quickly, and then again, slower, to be certain the words hadn’t changed between the first reading and the second.

[DEPLOYMENT ORDER — ROOK / ASHFALL-ZERO. OBJECTIVE: FOUNDRY-REMNANT STAGING GROUND, NORTHERN CORRIDOR. OPERATIONAL COMMAND: TO BE ASSIGNED ON ARRIVAL.]

Beneath the standard block, in a hand he didn’t recognize, someone had added a single line that no template had ever asked for, and he read that part a third time before the truck reached the first bend in the road: first confirmed sighting puts their numbers well past what a raiding party would need.
