Subject Zero: Faceless

Thorne didn’t send for him through the usual runner. He came himself.

”I’ve got a job for you. Real work, not busywork dressed up to look like it.” Thorne set a requisition slate on the table between them rather than handing it over directly. ”Every intake program Corps-wide is due its copy of the Corvale case study inside the week. Before that happens, someone has to confirm every copy carries the same redaction level as the master file. One office gets it wrong, and something that shouldn’t travel, travels.” He paused. ”I want you to be the one who checks it. And I want you to know, before you start, exactly what else this is.”

Say it plainly, then.

”You’ll be in the archive wing for most of a day, unescorted for stretches of it, cross-referencing case files that sit two racks down from material well above your clearance. I could send Calen with you the whole time and call it thoroughness. I’d rather send her partway and see what you do with the rest of it. This is a test. Pretending it isn’t would cost you more than telling you does.”

You could have just not told me.

”I could have. Then you’d have found out anyway, the first time you noticed which racks nobody was watching you near, and you’d have spent the rest of this posting wondering how many other tests I’d run without saying so.” He picked the slate back up, done with the point. ”I’d rather lose whatever advantage secrecy gets me and keep the rest of this working.”

* * *

Staff Sergeant Calen met him at the numbered wing’s outer door. The first time he’d passed through it rather than past it, doors marked with nothing but stenciled numbers instead of names. ”Don’t let the wing spook you,” she said, badging them both through. ”Half these rooms are just where Corps keeps forms nobody’s filed against in a decade. The other half, you’ll never see the inside of, and neither will I. Try not to think about which is which.”

Is that meant to be reassuring.

”It’s meant to be true. Reassuring’s extra, if you can find it in there somewhere.” She walked him to a long, low room lined with case racks, records boxes stacked by year rather than by program, and left him with a terminal, a stack of comparison printouts, and a level look. ”I’ll be back in two hours. If anything in here needs a second signature, that’s what the runner bell’s for.”

The work itself was slower than tedious. Line by line, redaction bar against redaction bar, checking that a black rectangle covering one detail in the master file covered the same detail in every distributed copy. He’d expected it to feel like busywork even knowing better. It didn’t. Each copy was a version of the same story handed to strangers who’d never meet him, and for the first time since a counter had handed him back a denial citing an index instead of his name, he was the one deciding what those strangers would and wouldn’t be allowed to know.

He found the error on the fourth copy, the one bound for a coastal intake program he’d never heard of. A single line, unredacted where every other copy blacked it out: subject’s affect flattened prior to discharge. The fabricated detail Hollis had stood in a corridor being angry about. Someone downstream had copied the master before the redaction bar was ever laid over it, and the uncovered version had gone out to at least one program already.

This line is wrong. It was flagged wrong weeks ago and it’s still in the record. This copy doesn’t even cover it.

He wrote it on the comparison sheet like that, unadorned, and moved on.

The Cycle Index racks were two rows over, precisely where Thorne had said they’d be. Unmarked boxes, numbers instead of titles, close enough that finishing his own row meant walking directly past them to reach the door. He let himself look, once, without slowing down. A box at shoulder height carried a number, and stencilled under the number was the double-stamped routing line Mabry had stopped mid-sentence over. He didn’t reach for it, didn’t ask the terminal a question it hadn’t been asked to answer.

Leave it where it is.

Calen came back on schedule, checked his sheet without commentary, and signed off on the finished row before walking him back out through the same numbered corridor. ”Thorne’ll want the fabricated-line catch tonight, not tomorrow. That’s not a small thing you found in there.”

* * *

Thorne read the full sheet standing rather than seated.

”The redaction gap goes out as an emergency correction tonight, every program, no exceptions.” He set the sheet down. ”I also had someone confirm, separately from your own sheet, which racks you were near and for how long. You were near the Cycle Index boxes for four minutes and eleven seconds, according to the corridor log. You didn’t touch one.”

You were watching the whole time.

”I was watching the log. Not you specifically. The same log any restricted-adjacent access generates automatically, whether I’d told you about the test or not. I want to be exact about that, because there’s a difference between ’I trusted you’ and ’I verified I could,’ and you deserve to know which one this was.”

Which one was it.

”Both, in the order that matters. I believed you’d leave it alone before I ever checked. Then I checked anyway, because belief isn’t the same as knowing, and I don’t get to ask Corps to extend you anything on the strength of a feeling I can’t put in a file. What I can put in a file is four minutes and eleven seconds, unbroken, no query logged against a restricted index. That’s the part Corps will actually read.” He pulled a second slate from the drawer, already prepared. ”A provisional archive credential. It lets you pull certain record categories yourself, at the counter, without routing every request through someone else’s desk first. Case-study material, unit rosters, anything below the restricted tier. It doesn’t touch what denied you. It’s the first credential anyone’s issued you that assumes you can be trusted with a door before you’ve proven you’d never want to open it.”

If you spot this narrative on Amazon, know that it has been stolen. Report the violation.

He took the slate. It weighed nothing, and it was the heaviest thing he’d been handed since the transfer orders that brought him here.

It’s not what I actually wanted.

”No. It’s what I could actually give you. Those aren’t always the same thing, and I’d rather you know which one this is than let you think I’d solved something I haven’t.”

Tolliver was in the corridor outside, which meant he had been in the office before Rook was.

”Provisional archive credential. Filed at eleven this morning.” He didn’t ask to see it. ”I read the filing before you had the slate in your hand.”

You objected.

”In writing. It’s on the record, the Director overrode it, which is his authority, and I’ve noted that too.” He fell into step, which he had not done before. ”You’ll want the grounds, since you’ll be living inside them. A credential is a door. The test that earned it measured whether you’d open the wrong one. It didn’t measure whether anyone in this building would open one for you.”

That isn’t the objection you made at the gate.

”It’s the same objection. At the gate it was a schedule. This morning it’s a door.” They reached the junction where the corridors split, and he stopped there rather than turn. ”Nothing in your file worries me. Everything around your file does. I’d write the same page about a man half your Grade who’d made this many people fond of him.”

He went left, and didn’t look back to see which way Rook went.

* * *

Mabry looked up when he brought it to the counter, saw the badge tier before she saw the mask, and went still.

”That’s not a records request. That’s a credential. Your own.” She turned it over once, reading the provisional stamp twice. ”I’ve filed maybe six of these since I started at this counter, and never once for someone who walked in through the front of it instead of arriving carrying one. Provisional’s still a category most of this building never gets offered. It means somebody decided you were worth the paperwork of trusting partway, which is a different thing from being trusted, and a much rarer one around here than people pretend.”

He used it three times the next day on things nobody would have denied him anyway. A unit roster, a supply manifest, a training schedule. A door that opened without an argument attached to it was novel enough to be worth going slowly through. No one stood behind the terminal watching him type.

The fourth pull was the one that mattered. He told himself afterward he hadn’t planned it as a test of the credential’s real limits, and mostly believed it, though there was no honest way to pretend he hadn’t known, typing his own designation into the request field, that he was finding out how far Thorne’s provisional trust reached. The system didn’t refuse him. It returned what the tier allowed. His own intake file, the ordinary parts, everything the counter would have handed over eventually if he’d asked her outright.

Most of it he knew by heart. What he didn’t know was in the margins. A technical annex attached to the intake-era composite-sketch session, the one where an analyst had asked him for context around the face and he’d had none to give. He’d lived that conversation. He’d never once seen how it was written up afterward.

[SUBJECT REPORTS NO ANCILLARY CONTEXT ASSOCIATED WITH PRIMARY VISUAL ANCHOR — NO SETTING, NO TEMPORAL MARKER, NO CORROBORATING SENSORY DATA. ASSESSED CONSISTENT WITH SEVERE DISSOCIATIVE COMPRESSION UNDER PROLONGED CAPTIVITY. REVIEWING ANALYST: [CODE REDACTED — CROSS-REF. AUTH. REQUIRED].]

He’d expected a name, or the absence of one in the ordinary way absences worked in this building. A blank line, a pending, a note that the analyst’s identity hadn’t been recorded. This wasn’t that. Something had been written there once and then reduced to a code, cross-referenced rather than blank.

Not doubt about the memory. A question about who wrote this down.

* * *

Mabry took longer than usual to answer when he brought the annex back to the counter.

”Cross-ref auth means the code isn’t missing. It means somebody decided, on purpose, that you weren’t cleared to see whose analysis this was.” She read it twice before saying anything else. ”I can’t pull cross-ref codes. That’s not my tier either.”

I’m not asking you to break anything.

”I know you’re not. That’s exactly why I’m going to look anyway.”

She was gone longer than the lookup should have taken. When she came back she set a single printed line on the counter rather than the full record.

”The code doesn’t resolve to a name. It resolves to a personnel classification tier that isn’t active in the current system. Hasn’t been since before the last records migration. Whoever wrote your annex was operating under a designation Meridian doesn’t currently issue to anyone.” She slid the printout across. ”I shouldn’t have told you that much. I’m telling you anyway, because you’ll find a worse version of it on your own eventually, and I’d rather you hear the real one from someone who isn’t afraid of you finding it.”

What tier was it.

”I don’t know. That’s the honest answer and it’s the only one I’ve got. The classification predates whatever I’ve got clearance to look up, same as the Index does.” She straightened the printout though it didn’t need straightening. ”I’m not telling Thorne I looked.”

Does it connect to what you almost told me before.

”I looked for the connection before I brought this to you, and I couldn’t find one I’d stand behind. That’s not the same as there being none.” She squared the counter’s edge with both hands. ”I filed a hundred requests before yours ever came through here. I’ve never had to tell someone twice in one month that the honest answer is a shrug.”

He set the annex and the printed line side by side before he left, close enough that the resemblance he’d half-noticed reading them separately became impossible to unsee reading them together. The denial had refused him with an index. The annex hid its author behind a tier.

Mabry followed his attention to the two pages laid flat next to each other, and didn’t say anything.

* * *

He read the printed line again alone in his quarters. The person who had sat across from him at intake, asked him gently what he remembered around the edges of a face that had no edges around it, and then written the answer down under a classification that no longer existed anywhere Mabry’s tier could see — had they been Meridian at all? Or had someone else been in that room, wearing Meridian’s procedure like a borrowed coat, filing a genuine analysis of the one thing he’d never let anyone else touch?

Someone assessed the memory. Someone who isn’t in this building’s own records anymore.

He put the printed line in the desk drawer where he kept the wooden bird, and left it there against the carved wing, and closed the drawer.
