Subject Zero: Faceless

The cylinder went south at first light on a supply truck with two riflemen sitting on the crate, and Renner watched it out of the gate from the motor pool and then sent for him.

Her tent was the courier’s old one with the imagery now stacked along one wall and the satchel hung from the pole. She had a sheet pinned flat on the table that he hadn’t seen before. The northern territories drawn small, the corridor and the valley at the top, the Directorate two provinces down, the old compound a circle with no label. Six marks on it in her hand. She had set a brass compass on the sheet’s lower corner, and turned the sheet until the two agreed, and left the compass where it was.

”Sit. I’ve done something with the night and I’d like it checked by the one person in this camp who can’t be lied to across a table.”

Rook sat. She put a finger on the marks in the order they’d happened.

”Your ravine, on the road out of the compound, the day you came out. The depot, two provinces west. The records annex outside the provincial garrison. The Directorate’s east fence. The picket slope. The hut.” She lifted the finger. ”Corps calls these operations and sorts them by date and by method. I’ve stopped sorting them by method. I’ve started asking what each one was for, and it comes out as two answers. The depot held Foundry paper boxed by cycle number. The annex held Foundry paper boxed by cycle number. They emptied the cycle shelves and touched nothing else in the building. The ravine, the fence, the hut: you. The picket: a measurement of you.” She sat back. ”Paper sorted by cycle, and one man logged by cycle. That’s the whole list. There isn’t a third kind of target.”

The manifest at my intake base. Calibration materiel, rotational.

”Which the colonel at that base read as equipment, because that’s what materiel means to a colonel.” Renner nodded at the satchel. ”It meant you. You’re the one line on their inventory that walks.”

He looked at the six marks. He had carried each of them separately and had not until this morning set them in a row and asked what they had in common, because the answer had been standing in the middle of them.

* * *

”That’s the pattern. Here’s the part I did overnight.” She unbuckled the satchel and laid the inventory flat beside the map, the thirty-one numbers, the ten struck. ”Corps Intelligence can request the Cycle Index’s shelf list — a column of numbers and a column of locations, and no word about what’s in the boxes. Numbers are below the tier. Contents aren’t. I asked at dusk. I had it by midnight, with a note asking why I wanted it, which I haven’t answered.”

She laid a second sheet beside the first. Relay print, the ink still faintly warm.

”The ten struck numbers are boxes the annex and the depot reported missing after they were hit. Every one. So struck means received, as I guessed, and now I know it. The twenty-one pending.” She ran the pencil down them. ”Nineteen are on a shelf in the Directorate’s archive wing, two rows from the ordinary case racks. I had the records desk walk the rack in the small hours. Staff Sergeant Calen, who did not enjoy being asked. Nineteen boxes where the shelf list says they are.” Rook’s attention went to the third from the bottom on its own, and stayed there while she talked. ”The other two are logged as in transit from the annex to the Directorate, and have been since before the annex was hit. In transit, on a records migration that never finished. Which means lost, or moving, and I don’t know which.”

The pending ones haven’t gone anywhere.

”They haven’t gone anywhere. They’re expected to.” Renner put the pencil down. ”Look at the header. Transferred. Not requested, not to be transferred. A list of boxes still sitting in our building, on our paper, under our stamps, headed as if the transfer were already a fact somebody had signed.” She let it sit. ”I said three readings, in front of the colonel. I’ve been honest with you about which one I was working. I’m not working the other two any more.”

Rook let the slate sit dark a moment. Someone in Meridian is filling the list.

This content has been misappropriated from NovelPhoenix; report any instances of this story if found elsewhere.

”Someone in Meridian drew up the list. Filling it is a different verb, and I’ll know who owns it when a box leaves that shelf.” She looked at the mask.

I told the liaison something on the berm. Before I told anyone. He turned the slate. A force that size fits an operation somebody wants to happen and doesn’t want to win.

Renner read it and did not pretend to be surprised by it. ”She’d have been the right person to tell first.” She squared the two sheets. ”It fits. I’d add one word. Somebody wants it to happen, doesn’t want it to win, and needs it to last.”

* * *

She kept him after that, and when she reached for the folder under the imagery he understood that the pattern had been the easier half.

”There’s a second list, and I’ve had it on my desk since Corvale because your file sets their weather and Corps decided I should watch the weather. The reference cases. Five files under one command, once. Four others. One closed.” She opened the folder. ”I read the closure at Corvale. I read it as a death, because that’s what a closed file is. I read it again last night with the shelf list beside it.”

She turned one sheet toward him. A cover page, Corps Intelligence copy, the designation blacked to a bar.

[REFERENCE CASE — SUBJECT DESIGNATION: [RESTRICTED]. FILE STATUS: CLOSED. SUBJECT NO LONGER IN MERIDIAN CUSTODY. MEDICAL ANNEX: NONE. BOARD OF INQUIRY: NONE. DISPOSITION: CROSS-REF. CYCLE INDEX — DIRECTORATE RESTRICTED.]

”Corps closes a dead man’s file with a medical annex. Cause, time, a signature from whoever pronounced him. Corps closes a deserter’s file with a board. This closes with neither. It closes with a routing.” Renner’s voice stayed as level as it had been at a ford. ”Read the date.”

Rook read it. He counted from it without wanting to, as Osei counted heads — back from the Offer, forward from a vault door.

Three weeks before I was offered the Asset track. Four days after the compound went dark. He held the slate a moment longer. I was told the count had moved since I arrived.

”On paper it had. The closure was logged the week you were processed. That’s the date whoever told you that would have been reading. The thing it was counting had moved earlier. Four days after your compound went dark, a week before anyone had come through its door.” Renner put the sheet down. ”I’ve had all night with this and I can’t make it a death. A file that closes on no longer in Meridian custody with nothing under it and a cross-reference to the one index nobody in this camp is cleared to open. That’s a man who was taken, and paperwork that let him be.”

Rook sat with the sheet between them. The woman from the gallery had said it across a desk on personal stationery, level as Renner was level now. Stopped being anyone’s decision to make. He had taken it as everyone had taken it. It had been true. It had been true of a corpse and true of a man in a truck.

Then the first remnant operation isn’t the ravine.

”The first remnant operation on my map is a week earlier than the ravine, and it’s one of ours.” She picked up the pencil, and drew a seventh mark at the sheet’s western edge, off the inked corridors, where the sheet carried no labels, and wrote a date beside it that came before the other six. ”They came out of a dead compound and the first thing they did was take back one of the four we were holding. Then they came for you, on a road, with rope, a week later. I don’t know why him first. I know the order.”

The count moved because they took one back.

”Yes.”

He did not write the question that came after it. It arrived whole. Which one. And behind it a second, quieter, that belonged to a woman with a notebook and a first page, and he had told her in a tent with the flap down that he would wait for hers, and the second question was hers before it was his. He left both on the far side of the slate.

Renner watched him not write it. ”I can’t give you the designation. It’s under the bar and the bar is above my file.” She closed the folder.

* * *

”One more thing, since we’re mapping, and then I’ll let you go.” She stood and moved the compass an inch, and the sheet stayed where it was. ”My signals corporal read Lieutenant Osei’s crest report before we came north — the whole thing, because Third Squad’s paper is required reading now. She logged a band on that captured relay. Below the marked frequencies, unlabeled, live, carrying nothing. He found the same thing on our camp relay the second night here. The dial wants to sit there. He says it’s stronger than her report describes, by a margin he doesn’t have an instrument for.”

I marked it on the crest. From where I stood.

”I know. It’s in her report that you did.” Renner looked at him. ”I’ve told him not to touch it until I know what it is. I’ve been told not to touch things before and I know what that instruction is worth, so I’m telling you as well. It’s on the corporal’s bench in the relay tent, and I don’t know what it is, and nobody on this front has a column for it.”

Neither do I.

”Then we’re even on one thing.” She sat back down to the map, and picked up the pencil, and said without looking up from it. ”Osei’s report is on the colonel’s table. I’ve read it. She wrote from the north three times and I was not informed once, and signed it, and I’d have given a great deal to have written a report like that before a board instead of after one.”
