Subject Zero: Faceless

Osei came to find him on the berm the next night with her book under her arm, which she never carried after dark, and stood at the sandbags instead of sitting on them.

”I’ve written that band on paper three times. Once on the crest, in the report that went to Ninth Actual. Once in the statement Corps took off me for the case study. Once in the report I put on Marrow’s table, because I put everything on it and the major told me the corporal’s got it here.” She held the book against her side. ”I’ve written a thing three times that I can’t describe. I want to know what I’ve been signing. You marked it on the crest. I’d like you to sit with it.”

Renner told the corporal not to touch it.

”Renner told the corporal. She didn’t tell me, and she didn’t tell you, and I’ve read her orders closely enough to know she chooses her nouns.” Osei turned toward the relay tent. ”You can say no. I’ll write that too.”

He went with her.

The corporal had the cloth off before they were through the flap.

The relay sat at the bench’s end apart from the others, an ordinary camp set, boxy, the dial ringed in Core-lit glass. The glass was lit. The needle sat below the lowest mark on the dial, in the unpainted stretch where there was no frequency to name, and the corporal put a finger near the dial without touching it.

”Run it up, it comes back down. Every set in this tent does it, and this one worst, and it’s the newest. I’ve had it on this bench four days. It’s louder than the lieutenant’s report says by a margin I’ve got no instrument for, and it’s carrying nothing I can raise a voice out of.” He looked at Osei. ”A signal has a shape, ma’am. This is a place the dial wants to rest.”

Osei sat, and ran the dial up through the marked bands and let it go, and the needle came down through them and settled where it had been, and the glass ring’s light did not change while it did it.

”That’s what it did on the crest.” She took her hand off the set. ”Rook.”

He sat on the corporal’s stool. He laid the baseline sense over the relay first, because it cost nothing and he did it to everything. A box, a warmth where the Core housing sat, the glass ring a faint ring of it. An object. The Sight would give him the same silence a wall gave, and he didn’t aim it.

Then he did what he had done on the crest, standing at the north edge with a stranger’s bird in his fist while Osei frowned at a dial. He marked the band’s position from where he sat.

He had done it then out of habit and it had been a mark and no more. He did it now knowing what a thread felt like, two of them carried across half a continent, and the mark sat somewhere other than where he had put it on the crest. It wasn’t in the relay. The relay’s needle rested where it rested for the same reason a truck’s frame hummed in the teeth near a generator. It was standing near something.

He knew the something. He had known it since a bench in a command wing where a held door had worn a groove in a carpet.

A thread. He could feel it lying across the valley and the corridor and the camp like a rope across a floor, the texture of it the texture of the colonel’s thread and Thorne’s — a channel somebody had consented to once and had never closed — and it was wide, and it was worn, and it was braided. Many threads, all of them lying the same direction, pressed by use into one groove, each running from a mind that had said yes once to a single mind that had never let go of any of them. Corvale’s strongpoints had swung to face him inside a second with no line of sight because every man in them had been standing at the end of the same rope. Doss had walked into a ford somebody at the other end of it had chosen.

He sat with that.

The corporal said, low, to Osei, ”The ring’s brighter. Since he sat down. It isn’t supposed to have a brightness.”

Stolen story; please report.

He knew what reaching along it would be.

A channel opened to a mind that had not agreed to have one opened. He had done that once by reflex at a tailgate to a medic who had then told him, in a truck bed, that the second violation was not being asked. He had done it once on purpose for ninety seconds on a bench and gone to a colonel’s office that evening and written it out, unsheltered. He had sent two words through a holding-room door and been dropped to one knee by the floor for it. He had carried the rule since, further than anyone at Meridian had made him carry it. A stranger’s mind was a door, and you did not put your hand on a door you had not been given.

He put his hand on it.

He went along the groove as he had gone along the colonel’s thread from a moving transport. A reaching that followed the worn direction of a hundred consents toward the one they all led to. It was easy. That was the worst of it. How little it cost, and how quickly the rope shortened, and that the mind at the end of it was not surprised.

Patience. Calm. The purpose he had read off three men at a fence line, rehearsed to a polish, but this was the hand that had done the polishing. It was aware of him at once — not as the colonel had been aware, a start, a wait — but as the courier had been aware in a chair, turning without hurry to look at a returned piece of equipment. It knew which mind had touched it. It had been expecting the touch for longer than he had known there was a rope.

Something in it settled, and began to gather toward him, and he understood that it was going to become a word, and whose word it was going to be.

He let go before it could finish.

The needle jumped on the dial. The corporal said something. Rook sat on the stool with both hands flat on the bench and the glass ring’s light going back down by degrees to what it had been, and across a valley a mind had turned toward him that already knew which mind he was.

”Rook.” Osei, level, at his shoulder. ”Report.”

He took the stylus. His hand was steady. That was the thing he would have chosen to lie about, if he had lied.

It’s a person.

She read it. ”Say again.”

One mind. In the valley. Every one of them at Corvale, every one on that slope, every man who walked out of that gate with rope, is on a channel to him — a channel the Line leaves behind when someone consents and no one closes it. He holds all of them. He’s what they’re linked through. That’s the band.

”You reached it.”

I went along it. I found him. I came back before either of us said anything.

Osei looked at the slate for longer than the words took. Then at the relay, whose needle had settled again below the marks, and at the corporal, who was looking at the bench and deciding what he had and hadn’t seen.

”I can’t write that.”

Write that I said it.

”I’ll write that you sat with the set for nine minutes by my watch and told me the band is one person in the valley, that you’d reached it, and that I believed you.” She opened the book and did, standing, in the tent’s bad light. ”Renner can decide what to do with a lieutenant who believes things. She’ll have it by first light.” She closed the book. ”Did it see you.”

Yes.

”Then it knows where you sat.” She said it as she said a headcount. ”Corporal. Cloth back on. Nobody touches it, and you didn’t have an order to take it off, and I’ll say so if anyone asks.”

”Ma’am.”

Sela’s flap was down. He scratched, and she opened it, and read enough off him standing in the dark to step back and let him in without a word.

He wrote it before he sat, because a thing like that got harder to write the longer a man stood holding it.

I opened a channel to a stranger tonight. He didn’t get asked. The same thing I did to Voss at a tailgate. I did it on purpose.

She read it and didn’t sit either.

”You’ve kept that rule since the ward. Longer than Meridian made you keep it. You told me once you’d broken it on a bench for a minute and a half and gone to the colonel the same night.”

I’m telling you the same night.

”You are.” She looked at the mask. ”What did you find.”

Someone who’d been waiting for me to do exactly that. He knew me before I’d finished arriving. The band is a person, Sela. One. Everyone they’ve sent at me has a channel open to him, and he’s never let one go.

She took that in.

”Did you say anything.”

No. He started to. I left before it was a word — his or mine.

”Then you drew your line after the door instead of before it. That’s a different line from the one you had this morning. You know that.”

I know it.

”Good. Then I don’t have to say it twice.” She sat on the stool at last, and after a moment he sat on the cot’s end. ”Marrow read my line. He sent for Renner and not for me, which I’m taking as a good sign until I’m told otherwise. Renner will read Osei’s report at first light and she’ll want the person on the band because that’s what she is. She’s going to ask you how you know.”

I’ll tell her.

”I know you will. Before she asks. As you told me.”

She opened the notebook, to a page well past the middle, and wrote a line and dated it, and turned the page so he could read it before the ink had dried, as she had the night before.

He crossed a line he’d kept longer than anyone asked him to. He told me the same night. I’ve decided that counts.

”It’s in the book,” she said, and capped the pen.
