Subject Zero: Faceless

The relay tent was the smallest in the camp and the warmest, two benches of Core-glass under a canvas roof that leaked light at the seams, and the signals corporal who ran it had a relay set apart from the others at the end of his bench with a cloth over it, as if it were a thing that might wake.

”Major said you’d be in.” He didn’t look at the cloth and didn’t look at the mask either; he looked at the outgoing pad. ”Standing authorization, Directorate records counter. I’ll need the request in your own words, and the credential number, and I’ll send it as written. I don’t tidy.”

Rook wrote it on the pad in his square hand.

Request under standing authorization, provisional archive credential, Rook / Ashfall-Zero. One: the reference-case file closed in the month of my intake — full copy. Two: the same file’s cover page and routing block, whatever the credential reaches. Three: the redacted appendix to my own intake summary, previously denied. He looked at it and added a fourth line. Direct to the records counter. Not through the Director’s office.

The corporal read it, and read the credential number against a list, and then again, and keyed it in without comment. ”Reply by dusk if the counter’s awake. Later if it isn’t. I’ll send for you.”

The cloth on the end relay stirred once in the draft from the flap and lay still.

The reply came at dusk, as he had said, and the corporal sent a private for Rook and had the print lying face-down on the bench when he arrived.

He turned it over.

[REQUEST — ROOK / ASHFALL-ZERO — STANDING AUTH. (PROV. ARCHIVE CRED.). ITEM 1: DENIED. ITEM 3: DENIED. MATERIAL CROSS-REFERENCED: CYCLE INDEX — DIRECTORATE RESTRICTED, ABOVE ASSET-FILE CLEARANCE. ITEM 2: SUPPLIED IN PART — COVER PAGE, ROUTING BLOCK. TRANSMITTAL: PVT. MABRY, RECORDS.]

Under the readout, the counter had sent the cover page as imagery, as Renner’s overflights came north. A grey plate, the text gone soft at the edges, the designation blacked to a bar as it had been on Renner’s copy. And in the lower right corner, the routing block. Two stamps, one over the other. On a grey plate red read as one darkness and black as another, and the one lay under the other with its edge showing, and beneath both a single line ran to a word that was not an office.

In the margin beside the block, small, in a hand he had last seen on a requisition slip he’d written his name on: Kept it. — M.

He stood with the print for a while. The corporal worked his other bench and let him.

Renner had said, in the courier’s old tent, that she’d know who owned the list when a box left a shelf. He had asked the counter for a file and got back a bar, a block, and a clerk’s three words, and the three words were the only thing on the sheet that had a person behind them. Mabry had honored the authorization to its letter and put her name on the transmittal where the Director’s office would read it, and had spent one line of margin on him besides. He knew what the margin cost her. He had watched her ask off a counter for a week over a single word.

Thank you, he wrote on the corporal’s pad, and left it there, and took the print.

Renner met him outside the relay tent, because she had known when the reply was due to the quarter-hour and had arranged to be passing.

”Your request. Your print.” She didn’t reach for it. ”Show it to whom you judge. I’d checked the liaison’s number against that sheet before she’d finished giving it to me, because I’m Corps Intelligence and that’s what my hands do. She hasn’t asked. When she does, it should be you she asks, and I think she knows it. I’ve stayed out of her way on purpose.”

You’ve stayed out of everyone’s way since the hut.

”Since the hut I’ve been told what I’m for, which is paper, and I’ve been finding out how much of it there is.” She stepped back. ”Go on. The flap’s down; I walked past it.”

Sela had the notebook open when he scratched the canvas, and she closed it before she let him in, and left her hand on the cover once the flap had dropped behind him.

”You’ve got something. You’re holding it like the courier held his silence.”

He set the print on the folding table between them, face up, and sat on the cot’s end, and let her read.

She read the readout first, all of it, the way she read everything. Then the plate. Then the corner. He watched her attention arrive at the block and stay.

”It’s the same.” She said it quietly. ”Red under black. The line to the index and no office on it. I’ve signed under that block and I’ve watched it dry.” She touched the margin beside it without touching the ink. ”Mabry.”

She reached what the credential reaches. She kept my slip.

”She’s braver than her rank.” Sela sat back. ”Whoever closed that file did what I did. Signed under two stamps and sent a man to an index. Knew, or didn’t. I don’t know which is worse and I’ve had longer than a year to decide.” Her hand came back to the notebook. ”You know what I’m going to ask.”

Yes.

”Then I’m asking.” She opened the notebook to the first page and turned it and held it flat. ”Look.”

He unclipped the slate from his belt.

Thirty-one numbers in his own square hand, one under the other, one of them copied twice at the foot. He laid the slate beside her page under the lamp, and he did not need to read down the column, because he had read it on the berm and again in Renner’s tent and a column read three times stays. He read it anyway, because she was watching him do it, and she had asked for a witness and a witness looks.

Third from the top. Four digits. A line through them in a darker ink that a clerk had drawn with a rule.

It’s there, he wrote, under the column, beside the number he had copied twice. Third from the top. Struck.

She looked at his slate for a long time.

”Struck is received.” Her voice stayed where she’d put it. ”Renner said so at the table. Whatever was in that box is in the valley. His box.” She stopped. ”I signed a slip that put a man’s paper in a place, and the place has just posted his paper to the people who kept a ledger with your number in it. I’ve been calling it the Index since I signed that slip, as if it were a shelf. It’s their ledger. We’ve been keeping it for them under our roof, and I’ve been one of the hands.”

He wrote nothing for a moment. Then he made a decision he had been carrying since a records counter and a roof, and wrote it out for her, plain.

A clerk at the Directorate said a thing to me once, across the counter, and wished she hadn’t. Most of the Index is closed cycles. Archived. Only the open ones need the double stamp and the restricted routing. He held it where she could keep reading. Open. Administratively active. A cycle nobody has closed.

Sela read it, and read it again, and her face did the thing it had done outside a records room, before the Ninth Front, when he’d told her about a second facility before command had.

”Open,” she said.

Your slip carried a double stamp. It could only have carried one if his cycle was open. The place you sent him was still running.

”Still running.” She said the words as if testing whether they’d hold weight. ”Then it’s the courier’s word. Continuation.”

The courier’s word.

”And yours is in there. Your appendix. Denied on the same cross-reference, restricted the same way.” She looked at the print, at the bar over the designation, at the block. ”Restricted is the routing for open. That’s what the clerk told you. I don’t know that your cycle’s open. I know what I’d bet, and I’ve stopped betting on the record over what I can see.”

I don’t know it either.

”No.” She closed the notebook, and then opened it again to the first page, and uncapped her pen, and under the four digits she wrote a single word and a date and turned it so he could read it before the ink was dry.

Struck. And the day.

”That’s the second entry on that page. Months between them, and a war’s worth of postings.” She capped the pen. ”I told you once, in my office, that I’d already chosen which side of a piece of paper I’d stand on the next time. I’m going to go and stand on it. Marrow ordered my write-up. It went to him and Renner and it said where, when, what I signed and what I was told. It didn’t say that the number I signed is on a courier’s inventory with a line through it, because I didn’t know that until a minute ago.” She stood. ”It’s going to say it by morning. He’ll have to decide what I am after that. A witness or the other thing. I want him deciding with the line in front of him. Not finding it later under a wall.”

He’ll read it as the other thing.

”He might. Then I’ll have been the other thing on paper, once, which is more than the man who closed that file ever put his name to.” She put the notebook in the pocket of her coat, where it sat square against her ribs. ”I asked you before I asked her. That’s kept. I’d like to keep one more thing, if you’ll let me.”

Ask.

”The next time you learn a word across a counter that you decide isn’t yours to spend. Spend it on me sooner. I’d have carried open better weeks ago than I’m carrying it tonight.”

He looked at her. Then he wiped the slate and wrote, and turned it.

I was keeping it for the clerk, not from you. I’ll tell you the next one the same night.

”That’s a room-like-this-one promise. I’ll hold you to it in one.” She lifted the flap for him herself, which she had never done. ”Go on. I’ve a line to write and I want it in Marrow’s hands before I’ve had time to think of a softer verb.”
