Subject Zero: Faceless

The summons came through Thorne’s office, which was itself the first thing worth noting about it. Councilor Adair hadn’t gone around him this time, and Thorne relayed the request in person rather than by slate.

”She’s back ahead of her council session, and she’s asked for you specifically. This one has a second name attached to it, though. A Corps Intelligence liaison, not Directorate staff. I don’t know him personally. I know his office.” Thorne didn’t editorialize further than that. ”You’re not obligated. I’ll say that every time, until it stops needing saying.”

I’ll go.

The room this time wasn’t Adair’s borrowed one with the curtains. It was a briefing room proper. A long table, a wall map of the Accord’s northern territories, and a second man seated when he and Thorne arrived. Unremarkable rank insignia, a folder squared precisely in front of him.

The map deserved more attention than the meeting was going to give it. While the officer arranged his folder and Adair had not yet arrived, Rook let the sense that stood in for sight travel the northern territories pin by pin. Colored threads running between garrisons, supply corridors inked and re-inked where some clerk’s information had improved, and, high in the map’s cold upper third, a single pin faded to the color of old bone, its label long since taken down. He didn’t need the label. He knew the river’s angle beside it, knew the pass to its south that the trucks had used, knew it with a certainty that owed nothing to maps. Eleven years of his life, and the vault a war had opened, held to a wall by a finger’s width of tarnished brass.

He measured it against the map’s scale bar before anyone spoke. The compound that had once been the entire world sat two days’ drive from this table, and smaller on the wall than the head of the pin that marked it.

”Councilor Adair asked me to walk you both through something before her session, since it touches your case directly and she’d rather you hear it plainly than read about it after the fact.” The officer didn’t offer a name, and neither Thorne nor Adair, arriving a moment later, supplied one. One more unnamed voice in a building that seemed to specialize in them. ”I run threat assessment for the northern territories. Specifically, for what’s left of the old Cindral-Foundry apparatus since the compound your own extraction came out of stopped existing as a going concern.”

I know what’s left of it. I lived there.

”You know what was there. I’m here to tell you what’s happened to it since.” He opened the folder, though he didn’t need it, reading more from memory than from the page. ”In the months right after the compound fell, we treated the scattered survivors as exactly that. Scattered. Stragglers. A handful of loyalists with nowhere to go and no command structure left to answer to. That assessment held until a supply depot two provinces west of here was hit, a few months back now, by a team using recovery-and-retrieval tactics on a Classified-adjacent research annex. Professional, coordinated, in and out before a response force arrived. We logged it as an isolated incident at the time. We don’t anymore.”

He drew a sealed evidence sleeve from beneath the folder and set it on the table where all three of them could see it: a squat, spent cylinder, its casing scorched at one end, not merely dead but emptied, a shell around an absence. ”Recovered from the depot’s ward housing. A dampening cell — field-built, not factory. Somebody out there is manufacturing tools whose entire purpose is getting through Meridian wards without waking anyone.” He didn’t slide the sleeve closer, and Rook was glad of that without examining why. Even across the table, some low memory in his back teeth insisted it knew what the thing had sounded like while it worked.

Does one of those work on a person.

The officer read the slate, and took longer over the answer than he had over anything else he’d said. ”A ward is a structure. A structure can be leaned on. What you are isn’t a structure anybody outside a Foundry room has ever had the chance to lean on, so the honest answer is that nobody in Meridian knows, and nobody is going to find out by asking a question in a briefing room.”

Unauthorized tale usage: if you spot this story on Amazon, report the violation.

Somebody will find out eventually. It won’t be Meridian who tests it.

”No,” he agreed. ”It won’t.”

Adair, seated at the table’s far end, watched Rook rather than the officer while he spoke. The same careful attention she’d used weeks ago in a room with better curtains. There was a water pitcher on the table, sweating its ring into the wood, and she had filled her own glass on sitting down without offering to fill one for anyone else. A small omission Rook doubted the rest of the room had registered. He registered it. Every officer, clerk, and vendor who had ever set food or drink in front of him had done it out of a reflex no briefing could train away; the councilor had read his file closely enough to know which courtesies were courtesies and which were small, unintended cruelties, and had quietly retired the wrong one.

”Since then: two more incidents matching the same operational signature. A records annex outside a different provincial garrison, emptied of specific material and nothing else touched. And—” the officer paused, the first hesitation he’d allowed himself since sitting down, ”—your own transport ambush, on the road out of the original extraction site. We’re revising our classification of that incident as of this quarter. The same operational signature as the other two, present at the very start of the pattern rather than incidental to it, which makes it the earliest confirmed data point we currently have.”

An old memory rearranged itself under new light without changing a single fact it actually contained.

You’re telling me that wasn’t random.

”I’m telling you it was never random. We simply didn’t have enough data points yet to see the shape of it.” The officer closed the folder, done with needing it. ”What survived the compound’s fall is a network. Thin, patient, organized enough to run three confirmed operations in the time since without once being caught in the act. Corps Intelligence is using a working name for it as of this quarter: Foundry remnants. An active, standing threat with its own logistics and its own objectives, built on more than nostalgia or leftover ideology with nowhere else to go. And one of those objectives, demonstrably now, has your own file somewhere on its list.”

The word landed in the room and stayed there. Adair broke the silence first, and when she did, she spoke to Thorne rather than to Rook.

”This is the piece I actually came to discuss with the council,” she said. ”The faction that wants the program dissolved will use everything in that folder as proof it should never have existed in the first place. A war that manufactures its own excuse to keep going, one asset at a time. The faction that wants it expanded will use the same folder to argue Corps hasn’t gone nearly far enough. Neither side, as far as I can tell, is planning to spend much time on the actual question underneath both arguments: whether the Accord’s citizens have a right to know a genuine, adversarial threat is still recruiting against them, right now, rather than believing the war that created men like you ended the day the Dominion’s flag came down.” She looked back at him, something steadier in her face than the careful neutrality she’d worn the first time they’d met. ”I’d rather you heard the actual shape of that argument from me directly than whatever version reaches you secondhand once the session’s public.”

Three operations since the compound fell. Is there a fourth already moving.

The Corps officer looked at him directly for the first time since the briefing began, and didn’t soften the answer the way Rook had half expected him to.

”We don’t know yet,” he said. ”That’s the honest answer, and it’s the only one I’ve got.”

Nobody in the room offered a better one to replace it.

He was last out when the briefing ended, and on the way to the door he stopped at the map once more, ostensibly to let Thorne and the officer clear the corridor’s bottleneck ahead of him. Two towns north of Halstead, in small unremarkable type, the map said COTTER’S BEND. A day’s walk off the nearest inked corridor, no pin in it, no thread near it, a place that mattered to nobody who maintained this wall. He held its position a moment against the bone-colored pin in the cold upper third, and against the unmarked stretch of country lying between the two, and made himself walk on before holding it could become studying it.

He carried the silence out with him after that, past Adair’s careful goodbye and Thorne’s unspoken offer to walk him back. Three confirmed operations. His own name somewhere on a list that had predated his own knowledge of the list’s existence entirely. Whatever the council decided in a week about how much of this the Accord’s citizens deserved to hear, the remnants themselves had apparently decided, a long time before tonight, how much of him they still wanted back.
