Subject Zero: Faceless

Captain Dray’s signature reached the Directorate before the infirmary had finished with the one man it had left to work on.

Thorne read it at his desk with Rook standing, which was its own answer about how long the reading was going to take.

”Compliance’s assessment on the continued escort. It recommends it run indefinitely, that your liberty pass be cut back to supervised movement, and that the provisional archive credential be suspended pending a review board.” He set it down. ”The assessment was written before the fence. It was signed after.”

Then he was right.

”He was right that you’re on a schedule. He was right that three men crossed two provinces and knew which window to stand under.” Thorne didn’t soften any part of it. ”He is not right that the answer is to take the town off you. I’ll be saying so at the board. I’ll probably lose.”

Tolliver was in the corridor when Rook came out, because he had evidently been there the whole time.

You’ll get what you asked for.

”Probably.” Same folder. Nothing in his face suggested this was a good morning. ”One thing on the record between us, since it won’t be on the other one. I didn’t write that page to be proved right. I wrote it in the weeks before there was anything to be right about.”

It cost me a town.

”It cost you a town.” He shifted the folder to his other arm. ”The three at your fence didn’t come because you have a name. They came because you’re findable, and you’re findable because there’s somewhere you like. Those are the same sentence from where I write them down. I know they aren’t from where you’re standing.”

He went, and Rook could not find the place in any of it where the man was wrong.

The visit had been arranged nine days before anyone at the fence line had ever heard a Core-dampening tool humming against a ward. A small, approved civilian delegation day, the kind Thorne had mentioned once in passing as something the Directorate owed the town it sat next to and rarely got around to actually scheduling. Nell had been the first name on the list, mostly because she was the only Halstead vendor who’d ever asked, unprompted, to see where he actually worked.

Nobody had thought to cancel it. The base had been on alert less than twelve hours; the paperwork clearing three Halstead tradespeople through the gate had been filed nine days earlier and nobody remembered, in the scramble of the morning after, that it was still sitting active in the system.

She’s here. Today, of all days.

He caught sight of her at the checkpoint from across the yard, badge already clipped to her collar, walking beside Staff Sergeant Calen. She hadn’t heard yet. Whatever had actually happened at the east fence overnight hadn’t made it past the base’s own gate in any form the town would recognize as more than a rumor of extra patrols.

Calen had started the tour at the motor pool, of all places, the one part of the base with nothing classified in it and everything ordinary. Transports, tool racks, a mechanic arguing amiably with a stuck bolt. ”Figured she’d rather see something that looks like work than a corridor full of doors she’s not cleared past,” Calen said afterward, unbothered by having made the call herself rather than asking anyone’s permission first. ”Told her the numbers on those doors don’t mean anything interesting either. Wasn’t sure that part was strictly true, but it settled her nerves some.”

He reached them before the tour’s second stop, and the moment Nell got a proper look at the mask, something in her own expression sharpened.

”You’ve got a look on you I haven’t seen before.” She said it without preamble, setting down the small parcel she’d carried in for him. A sheaf of her good letter paper and two of the pencils she resharpened past the point anyone else would have, the kind she’d once told him she saved back for people who wrote more than they said. ”Calen’s been perfectly pleasant. Nobody’s told me anything’s wrong. I’d still like you to tell me if it is.”

Something happened here last night. It isn’t finished being dealt with yet.

Her hand went still on the parcel’s string. ”How not finished.”

Three men came for me specifically. Two are in custody. One isn’t, and that one is on me. Thorne’s people are still confirming whether that’s the whole of it or only the part that got caught.

She didn’t ask the obvious question, whether she was in danger standing in this exact yard, at this exact hour. ”Should I leave.”

I don’t know yet.

She nodded once, slowly, and didn’t reach for the parcel again. ”Then I’ll wait exactly as long as you need me to, in whatever room you tell me to wait in, and I won’t pretend that’s the same as being calm about it.”

Thorne found them both twenty minutes later, in the records-wing waiting room Calen had steered them to without being asked — the closest thing this end of the base had to a room with no operational value for anyone to fight over. His face told Rook something before a word of it reached his voice.

”The one we took conscious gave up a rendezvous window before he stopped talking again. Two hours from now, a fallback location outside the wire, in case tonight’s team didn’t check back in on schedule. That doesn’t mean a second team is standing at that location right now. It means we can’t yet say for certain that it isn’t.”

So the alert isn’t over. It’s the same alert, still moving.

”Still moving. Still live.” Thorne looked past him, once, at Nell seated near the room’s single window. ”I’m sorry your delegation day landed on this particular morning. I won’t pretend I have anywhere better to put you until the perimeter’s confirmed clear.”

”I’ve been in worse waiting rooms than this one,” Nell said, without looking up from the window, ”for smaller reasons than a man’s life. I can manage an hour.”

Thorne left them to it, and for a while neither of them said anything. She’d brought her mending tape in her satchel, from habit, and worked a strip of it slowly between her fingers. The same restless small habit he’d watched at her stall a dozen times without ever asking what it was for.

”You don’t have to keep me entertained,” she said eventually, catching him watching the tape rather than the window. ”I’m not made of glass. I’ve buried a husband and outlasted two bad harvests in this town. An hour in a records-wing waiting room isn’t going to be the thing that finishes me.”

I know that. I’m not worried you’ll break. I’m worried about what it means that you’re even here to have to.

”That’s a different worry entirely, and I don’t have a tidy answer for it.” She set the tape down at last, folding her hands over it instead. ”I asked to come, weeks ago now — I wanted to see where you actually spend your days, and I meant the asking, not because I thought it would be safe. I don’t think either of us gets to have this — whatever this is between us — without some version of today eventually showing up in it.”

He sat with her while the base outside kept working through whatever the morning actually required of it. Patrols, a second sweep of the fence line, the low, ongoing hum of people doing a job neither of them could see from this one small room. She didn’t ask him to narrate any of it. She simply stayed, letting the silence do the work talking would only have gotten in the way of.

If they’d come tonight instead of last night, you’d have been standing where I found you at the checkpoint.

She heard the thought land the way she always did, without needing him to write it twice. ”I know. I worked that out for myself somewhere around the second sentence you gave me.” She finally looked over, and whatever careful lightness she’d been holding for his sake gave way to something plainer underneath it. ”You don’t have to carry that alone either, you know. Same as everything else.”

He didn’t have an answer ready, and for the length of one held breath, he understood what the last two hours had actually been about. Not the patch. Not the rendezvous window, or the three in custody, or whatever the fallback location eventually turned up. Her, sitting in a waiting room that existed for no other reason than that she’d chosen, weeks ago, to ask him a kind question nobody else in this building had bothered with.

I have something to lose now that isn’t just my own life. I didn’t fully understand that until this morning.

”No,” she said, gently, reading the shape of the thought even without the words for it. ”I don’t imagine you did.”

The perimeter cleared forty minutes later, the fallback location found empty and cold, no second team waiting anywhere the search reached. Nell finished her delegation tour anyway, insisting on it once Thorne confirmed the all-clear, and walked the motor pool’s second half with Calen as if the morning hadn’t happened. She held the parcel of paper a little tighter than before when she finally handed it over at the gate on her way back out.

”Same day next month,” she said, at the checkpoint, in the same plain register she used for closing out a ledger entry. ”Assuming your Directorate still owes this town a delegation day by then. I’d rather come back on purpose than let one bad morning decide I won’t.”

You’d come back knowing this could happen again.

”I’d come back knowing a great many things could happen to either of us on any given day, same as anyone in this town does every time they walk out their own front door.” She squeezed his arm once, brief and unceremonious, and stepped through the gate before he could answer that.

Rook stood at the checkpoint long after her transport had cleared it. He had spent every posting since the vault door learning what he could survive, and nobody had ever told him that would turn out to be the easy half.
