Subject Zero: Faceless

He had resolved, weeks ago, to test the Compliance escort’s actual limits on his own schedule rather than wait for an occasion Compliance chose for him. This one, he decided walking back through the gate the day after Nell’s stall, would do. He’d long since learned to read the escort by its shape rather than its face. A rotation of three, only one of whom had ever given him a name, holding a loose forty paces back on every liberty visit. What he didn’t know was how loose, and he meant to learn it.

He’d built the route the night before, on the slate, then wiped it. Four deviations, each shaped to answer a different question. A turn taken early, to learn whether they anticipated or followed. A blind lane with two exits, to learn whether one watcher held or two split. A stop with no transaction in it, to learn how long standing still stayed unremarkable to someone paid to notice. And last, the long way home past the tanner’s yard, for no reason at all. The watchers who lasted were the ones who assumed everything a subject did was a message; the trick was making sure at least one message said nothing.

He didn’t go back to Nell first. A second visit to the same stall this soon would read as exactly what it was to anyone paying attention, and he had no intention of making her the visible center of whatever this turned out to be. Instead he found the almanac seller two stalls down from hers, a man named Pruett who bought his stock off the northern hauliers and generally heard whatever they were carrying a week before the rest of the square did.

Nell mentioned a story. A woman, a recurring dream, somewhere north.

Pruett squinted at the slate, then at him, visibly working out whether a masked stranger asking about a ghost story was a customer or a complication worth having. ”Heard it off a grain hauler who runs the Cotter’s Bend route. Told it like old news by the time it reached me, which usually means it’s been through four mouths before mine.” He scratched at his jaw. ”Hauler’s not due back through here for another eleven days. Regular route, reliable as clockwork. You’d have better luck asking Yura at the dye stall. She’s got kin out that way, might’ve heard it fresher.”

Yura had heard it fresher, and she told it in a different shape entirely. Fewer scenes, less color, none of the fortune-reader Nell’s version had leaned on to give the story its ending. She put the dreaming woman younger than Nell’s telling had, though Yura had never met the woman herself and was only repeating what her cousin had said over a shared meal three weeks back. Rook listened for where the two versions diverged and found plenty. A different season, a different number of months the dream had run, a fortune-reader present in one telling and entirely absent from the other. What he was actually listening for was the one place they didn’t diverge.

He found it near the end, when Yura, unprompted, described how the dream actually felt to the woman having it. Not frightening. Something closer to grief. Grief for a person she’d never once met and couldn’t name, arriving in her sleep with the aching shape of a loss.

Nell had used almost the same words, a day and a different mouth ago, and neither woman had any reason to have compared notes on a detail neither of them treated as the story’s most interesting part.

Say that again. The part about the grief.

”That it doesn’t scare her. That it feels like missing somebody.” Yura shrugged, unbothered by the question, taking it for ordinary curiosity from an ordinary customer. ”Odd thing to remember out of a whole secondhand story, but that’s the bit that stuck with my cousin too, apparently. Grief’s a strange thing to dream if you’re only meant to be frightened.”

He thanked her, bought a length of dyed cord he had no use for to make the visit look like what it wasn’t, and walked on toward the grain hauler’s usual stopping post. Empty, as Pruett had said it would be, the man not due for eleven days yet. What Pruett hadn’t said was that the innkeeper who kept the hauler’s letters and knew his stops would be gone too. Visiting a sister two counties over, unexpectedly, back nobody at the post could name a date for.

He asked the ostler’s boy at the post, in the roundabout register the slate made natural, whether anyone else had come asking after the hauler lately. The boy said no, then amended it. A peddler in the spring had asked after the Cotter’s Bend road generally, but the spring was the spring, and the peddler had bought nothing, and he only remembered the man because his mother had called him rude for a week afterward. It was nothing. Rook agreed with the boy that it was nothing and noticed himself keeping it anyway.

That was where the trail ran out. It kept trailing off somewhere into a county he had no standing reason to visit and no safe way to ask about, without becoming, himself, the next strange story a market town told about a stranger.

He didn’t chase it further. The trail was there, thin and cold and probably findable given enough weeks and enough questions asked in enough directions, but chasing it meant asking questions specific enough that someone would eventually notice a masked man from the Directorate taking an unusual interest in a fortune-teller’s ghost story.

Today’s watcher wasn’t the gray shawl. It took him most of an hour to be certain. A younger man this time, sandy-haired, carrying a satchel of the kind every third courier in Halstead carried, changing his pace often enough that the pace itself never became a signature. Rook confirmed him at the blind lane, where the two exits forced a choice. The man held the lane’s mouth and let him go, which meant either a second watcher Rook never found, or a professional secure enough to lose sight of him rather than be seen hurrying.

He found he didn’t resent the man, which surprised him. Eleven years of being watched had taught him to read watchers as instruments of the rooms that owned them, and this one was good at a job Rook himself would have been good at. Patient, unhurried, invisible mostly by being ordinary.

He’d taken all four planned turns off his usual liberty route by the time he circled back toward the gate. The escort held its forty paces the entire afternoon, matching every deviation without once closing the distance to ask why any of it was happening. Whatever eventually reached whichever desk read the report, he was fairly certain now, would say nothing more alarming than a longer walk on a slow day.

Confirmed: they follow the route. They don’t ask about the reason for it.

Tolliver was at the gate.

Not forty paces back, and not arranged to be anywhere else — standing to one side of the guardhouse with his folder under his arm, in the one place on the road where being seen was the entire point of standing.

”Four deviations,” he said. ”The early turn. The lane with two mouths. Ten minutes at a stall you bought nothing from. The tanner’s yard. The tanner’s yard is what told me the other three were on purpose.”

You broke cover to say that.

”You spent an afternoon measuring me. You’re entitled to the result. You measured accurately — forty paces, one man, no closing.” He shifted the folder to his other arm. ”What you didn’t measure is that I’m not the thing worth counting. You’ve gone down that road on the same days at the same hour to the same square, and you’ll go again, because you like it there. That isn’t a criticism. It’s a schedule.”

Compliance doesn’t approve of a schedule.

”Compliance doesn’t approve or disapprove. I write down what happens.” He looked at the mask without any of the care other people in this building took over doing it. ”You’ve carried a designation your whole life. A designation is a wall. Nobody makes exceptions for a wall. Since your pass was signed I’ve watched a staff sergeant approve a duty change for a private without asking what frightened her, a Director hand-carry a personnel request rather than route it, and four people below the rank to do it use a name for you that isn’t on any form in this building. None of that is corruption. It’s fondness. Fondness around a Class II is a condition, and conditions go in the assessment.”

Rook held the slate and didn’t write on it.

”I’m not asking you to answer that. It’s the assessment. You’ll see it when Captain Dray signs it.” He nodded once to the gate guard, not to Rook, and went in ahead of him.

The day’s other finding sat less easily. A story invented once could travel and mutate however far it liked and remain, underneath all its borrowed decoration, one person’s invention wearing a different coat each time it changed hands. A story two strangers arrived at independently, with no way to have compared notes and no reason to bother if they could, was a different kind of object entirely. Thinner evidence than a name or a face or a place he could actually go, but real in a way invention never quite managed to counterfeit.

Somewhere north of a market town he’d learned to like the smell of bread in, an actual woman was dreaming an actual man with no face, and calling it grief rather than fear. A detail small enough that no one inventing a ghost story would think to add it on purpose, and specific enough that he could not, walking back through the gate that evening, put it down again.

Sela caught him at the checkpoint, back earlier than her own errands had needed her, and studied him for a beat longer than a routine return usually earned.

”You’ve got a longer walk on you than usual today.” She said it lightly, an observation rather than a question, though her eyes stayed on him a moment past where the observation alone required.

Compliance’s escort will confirm it, if anyone asks.

”That’s not what I asked.” She let it sit there anyway, unpushed. ”You don’t owe me the rest of it tonight. I’m only telling you I noticed, in case it matters later that someone did.”

It might. Not yet.

”Then I’ll wait,” she said, and fell into step beside him toward the gate without asking again.
