Subject Zero: Faceless

The rehearsal slope wasn’t Aldern Ridge itself — Osei had picked a lower rise a mile behind the line, similar grade, similar cover, none of the actual risk — but Third Squad ran the approach on it three times anyway, in full kit, until the hand signals came without anyone having to check twice.

Contact. Hold. Withdraw. Advance by twos.

He learned Ilsen’s rhythm on the climb and matched it by the second pass. Wren corrected his spacing once, a light tap on the shoulder rather than a word. Hollis ran the drill beside him without comment either way, which by now read less like distance and more like a man simply doing his job and letting the job speak for him. On the third pass, reaching the crest a half-step ahead of the rest of the line, Hollis glanced back once to confirm the formation had held — and included him in that check without seeming to notice he had. A habit forming before anyone had decided to name it as one.

Nobody mentioned Calder’s Ridge. Nobody needed to. The drill itself was the only conversation happening, and for three passes it was enough.

Osei called it after the third run, satisfied in the flat, unceremonious way she was satisfied with anything.

”Good enough for daylight. Tomorrow’s the part that matters.” She checked the sky, judging the hour off it rather than a watch. ”Squad, stand down. You—” she pointed the last word at him without looking up from her own gear ”—report to the command tent. Major wants you before evening mess.”

Ferro wasn’t alone this time. A second officer stood beside him at the folding table — younger, a captain’s bars, a slate case under one arm instead of a rifle — and Osei followed him in far enough to hear, then took up a position by the tent flap rather than a seat.

”Captain Dray, Asset Compliance.” Ferro said it like a title he’d had to look up the first time himself. ”Corps sent her forward with the transfer file’s paperwork three days ago and I only just found the hour to use her. She’s going to tell you what you’re allowed to do out there, and I’m going to tell you the part she won’t.”

Dray opened her slate case and set a short document on the table, formatted in the clinical readout register he’d learned to recognize from every status card issued about him so far.

”Rules of engagement for a Classified asset in a live-fire deployment,” she said. ”Shorter than you’d think. You may use Calibration in direct defense of yourself or another Meridian soldier, once conventional means have failed or clearly will. You may not initiate contact with Calibration absent a direct order or an immediate threat to life. Any use beyond a single defensive instance requires a report filed the same day, by whoever witnessed it, not by you.” She looked up. ”That’s the whole document. Command tried to dress it up into more than it is — I stripped it back down before I brought it to you.”

And if I judge the threshold wrong.

”Then it gets reviewed like every other judgment call a soldier makes under fire,” Dray said. ”Not differently because of what you are. That’s the actual point of writing it down this plainly — so nobody can quietly hold you to a stricter rule than the one on the page.”

Ferro took the slate from her without asking, closed the document, and set it aside.

”That’s the rule for what you’re permitted to do,” he said. ”Now the rule for what happens if it stops mattering whether you’re permitted.”

He nodded to Dray, who produced a second item from the case — small, matte-grey, no larger than a spent shell casing, with a single recessed contact on one face.

”Every Classified asset fielded on an active front carries one of these,” Dray said. ”Every subject on the reference-case list wears the same thing the day they clear intake for combat duty — you included, and for the same reason as the rest of them, nothing about your case singled out. Your kit manifest lists it as a standard field component. That’s the manifest talking, not me — I’d rather you heard the real reason from someone in the room.”

The others. The three still alive. He hadn’t thought of them in days — not since the Offer, and the count that had gone from four to three while he sat in a room deciding what his signature was worth. Somewhere, presumably, one of them was standing in a tent much like this one, being handed the same small grey object by someone with Dray’s exact clinical patience.

He hadn’t decided to read Dray; by now the Sight went where his attention went. It found nothing dramatic underneath her delivery — just an ordinary calm, worn smooth by however many times she’d given this exact briefing to someone else. That, on its own, told him more than anything in the document had.

She turned it once between two fingers before setting it on the table.

”It’s a Core-suppression charge, keyed to a single designated officer’s authorization. Triggered, it forces an immediate, total collapse of active Core output — not a request your body can refuse. The containment ward back at intake could be pushed against, if only for a few seconds, by anyone strong enough. This one doesn’t leave room for that. It happens the instant the officer’s authorization clears, and it keeps happening until that officer releases it.”

How long does it take to recover from that.

”Nobody’s had to find out on this front yet,” Dray said. ”The one documented use, at a different posting, put the subject unconscious for six hours and left him unable to draw on Core at all for two days after. He recovered fully. That’s the only case file I have, and I’m not going to pretend a sample of one tells you much.”

Ferro picked the charge up himself, giving it the same unhurried once-through Dray just had.

”Until further notice, I hold the authorization,” he said. ”I didn’t ask for it. Somebody has to, and right now there’s no one else in your chain of custody to give it to.” He set it back down, closer to him than to the edge of the table. ”You’ll wear it clipped to the strap on your kit, visible, not hidden. That’s deliberate. Command wants you to know where it is and exactly who’s holding the other end of it, the whole time you’re carrying a rifle for us.”

The tent held still for a moment. Osei, by the flap, hadn’t moved either, though her arms had come uncrossed somewhere in the last minute without her seeming to notice.

”If it triggers mid-engagement,” she said, breaking the quiet with the same practical register she used for hand signals, ”what does my squad see happen to him.”

”He goes down where he stands,” Ferro said. ”It doesn’t warn him first, and it doesn’t count down to it. If he’s mid-stride, he falls mid-stride. Plan your formation around that possibility as you’d plan around a squadmate taking a round — because functionally, for however long it lasts, that’s what it is.”

Osei absorbed that without comment — one more operational fact filed away for later, no different in her handling from any other.

Understood. He held the slate up long enough for both officers to read it, then added one more line before setting it down. I’ve worn something like this before. Different hands on the trigger.

Nobody in the tent had an answer ready for that, and nobody offered one. Dray closed her case. Ferro didn’t pick the charge back up.

The quartermaster’s tent smelled the same as it had three nights ago — oil, canvas, the particular staleness of gear that had outlived several owners — but this time the sergeant behind the counter was already waiting with a crate open before he’d finished ducking through the flap.

”Word came down an hour ago. Full combat load.” She didn’t ask about the mask this time either — just reached under the counter and set a second one on top of the crate, dark-plated, heavier than the standard-issue piece he’d been wearing since intake.

He turned it over once. A darker composite, dense enough that it didn’t catch what little lamplight the tent had to offer. The strap alone was a different design — a double clasp instead of a single band, built to hold under something harder than a bad startle.

”That one won’t slip if your body decides to flinch,” she said, with the same unbothered economy she’d used handing him a loaner rifle his first night here. ”Whatever made the old one come loose that easy — command finally decided it wasn’t worth the risk out where flinching gets people killed.”

He fastened it in place, felt the second clasp settle and hold. He’d have called that detail small, once. Standing here now, with a suppression charge clipped visibly to his kit strap and a ridge waiting somewhere past tomorrow morning, it felt like the first piece of gear anyone had handed him that was actually built around keeping him alive rather than accounting for him.

The rest could still, easily, be either.

The dark plate of an unissued rifle scope, propped against the crate, gave back the mask’s new shape — blunter at the jaw, the double clasp a visible line where the old strap had been a single one. The face beneath it hadn’t changed, and never would. But for the length of a held breath, looking at what the front had actually built for him instead of merely fitted him with, he let himself register it as something closer to being equipped than being managed.
