Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The second half changed shape inside four minutes.

Valencia pressed considerably higher than they had in the first forty-five. Aduriz worked the two Schalke center-backs while Soldado sat off Metzelder, dragging him wide. Banega and Albelda shadowed Mateo in a rolling double-team, one of them constantly on his shoulder while the other cut the passing lane in front of him. Every time Mateo turned to receive, the ball had to be redirected to someone else. Whenever it went to a teammate, that player had barely two seconds to move it before a white shirt closed in.

It was a sharp tactical adjustment. Emery had used the interval effectively. Schalke found themselves funneled backward and sideways, struggling to break the high press with anything more ambitious than a long clearance from Neuer.

Magath watched the pattern develop from the sideline. He stayed calm, calling Rakitić over during a throw-in stoppage to instruct him to drift wider, giving Mateo an open passing outlet along the left flank. Rakitić nodded and executed the shift immediately. On the next possession, Schalke strung two clean passes forward before Valencia reclaimed the ball. It was a modest improvement, but it gave them breathing room.

Vardy was visibly struggling with his ribs. Mateo noticed it in his posture, favoring his right side and holding back from the explosive runs he had made in the first half. Magath would likely have to make a substitution over the next twenty minutes.

For the moment, the priority was absorbing the pressure.

The breakthrough arrived in the fifty-second minute from an unexpected source.

Atsuto Uchida beat his marker on the right wing. It was a crisp, composed turn, dropping his shoulder to the left before cutting sharply inside, slipping past the defender’s outstretched challenge with the ball glued to his studs. Uchida pushed five yards forward into open green grass, lifted his chin, and picked out Annan making a smart diagonal run into Valencia’s half.

Annan took the pass cleanly in stride. He drove into space, drawing Bruno Saltor off his line, and clipped a sweeping switch across the pitch to Huntelaar on the far left.

The delivery was inch-perfect. The ball curled through the air, dropping right into Huntelaar’s running path as he cut inside from the touchline. Huntelaar cushioned it on his chest, set his footing, and squared up against Jérémy Mathieu.

Mathieu had put together a solid defensive showing, using his pace, strength, and discipline well. However, facing Huntelaar in open space with time to measure a shot presented an immediate threat, and Mathieu had barely two seconds to react.

He chose to plant his studs, daring the Dutch forward to take him down the outside.

Huntelaar dipped his shoulder as if accelerating toward the byline. Mathieu committed his weight to the movement. Huntelaar instantly cut back inside, chopping the ball from his left foot to his right in a fluid motion, slipping past the defender before Mathieu could adjust his balance.

Vardy was already charging toward the penalty spot. Annan attacked the far post from the right flank, and Mateo, freed as his markers drifted toward the play, surged directly into the pocket between Valencia’s central defenders.

Huntelaar had three clear passing avenues, each carrying a high chance of a goal.

Mathieu was left with a single desperate option.

He wrapped both arms around Huntelaar’s waist from behind, dragging the forward down to the turf.

A sharp blast of the whistle echoed across the pitch.

The referee reached for his pocket without hesitation, issuing an immediate yellow card. Mathieu offered no protests. He untangled himself from Huntelaar and lay flat on his back, staring up at the bright Mestalla floodlights to accept the tactical foul. A booking was a small price to pay compared to conceding a third goal that would effectively kill the tie.

Huntelaar pushed himself up from the grass. He wore a look of quiet disappointment, the familiar frustration of a striker denied an almost certain finish.

The referee stepped out the distance for the set piece.

Twenty-five meters out from goal, situated slightly to the right of center.

Mateo walked over and picked up the ball.

Having stood over similar set pieces throughout the campaign, he recognized the distinct shift in the crowd whenever he placed the ball within range. The Mestalla supporters were well aware of what he could do. They had watched him open the scoring in the second minute and seen him glide through their midfield. Watching him stand over a dead ball in a dangerous pocket brought a tense, quiet hush over the fifty thousand spectators, the unmistakable silence of a home crowd bracing for impact.

Annan jogged over to the spot. ”Do you want me to disrupt their wall?”

”No. Hold your position out wide on the far post. If it bounces back off the wall or the woodwork, get on the rebound,” Mateo instructed.

”Understood.” Annan patted his shoulder and moved wide.

Huntelaar stepped forward next. ”Jamie is holding the central area. I will attack the near post. If the keeper spills the save, one of us will tuck it away.”

”Good plan.”

Huntelaar took his spot in the penalty box. Schalke had six players loading the eighteen-yard area alongside the defenders man-marking them.

César Sánchez organized his defensive wall with urgency. Four men lined up shoulder to shoulder, spaced to guard the far corner. César positioned his stance to protect the open side of the net, anticipating a curling right-footed effort across his body.

Mateo had spent months refining a different trajectory, practicing a sharp, dipping strike over the wall aimed directly at the near post using the outside of his instep, mimicking the classic Beckham whip.

He had saved this specific technique for a high-stakes knockout evening, having kept it in reserve since the stoppage-time goal against Bayern in the group stage.

Mateo measured four deliberate steps backward. He planted his footing, balanced his weight across his hips, and let his arms rest loosely at his sides. He checked the position of the ball, scanned the top edge of the wall, and locked eyes on César’s stance.

César stood fixed to his line, watching the teenager’s posture closely, trying to anticipate the delivery.

Over on the Schalke bench, Felix Magath stood with his hands resting on his hips alongside Hughes Yves, both of them watching the pitch in total focus.

Across the technical area, Unai Emery stood with his arms folded tightly, eyes darting between the wall and the open corners of the goal, running through the same defensive calculations as his goalkeeper.

The outcome remained completely unpredictable.

Three hundred and fifty kilometers to the north, inside the Camp Nou suite, Guardiola, Iniesta, Messi, and Xavi turned their full attention to the broadcast.

Iniesta pointed a finger at the screen. ”He is going to target the near post.”

Xavi shook his head with a slight frown. ”From that side? The angle is way too sharp to get it up and down.”

Iniesta kept watching without looking away. He had watched enough of the free kick against Bayern on YouTube to know what the run-up meant.

The referee placed the whistle to his lips and blew.
