Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Schalke began the second half differently.

The first three passes of the second half took less than four seconds. No holding, no hesitation, no checking for the highest-probability line before releasing. The ball moved before any of the yellow shirts had completed their initial press assignments, and by the time Dortmund’s front three had coordinated into their press structure, the ball was already on Schalke’s right flank with Farfán thirty metres ahead of where the press had arrived.

The relay was operating at the speed Magath had described at halftime.

Farfán played it inside to Mateo, who was already moving to the position where the decision would be made before the ball arrived. The overlay had lines forming before his first touch: Per Kluge to the left, Huntelaar checking his run, the gap between Subotić and Hummels visible in the distance.

Not yet. Too many yellow shirts between that gap and the ball.

He played it to Per Kluge, who played it immediately to Jones. Jones back to Mateo. To Annan wide left, back inside, to Per Kluge again.

Dortmund’s press was good but it was built around arriving at the ball-carrier within two seconds of receiving. If the ball was moving faster than two seconds, the press was arriving at empty space. The relay had found this cadence and was maintaining it, and after ninety seconds of second-half possession Schalke hadn’t been dispossessed.

51st minute. Bender hesitated, doing the quick math in his head and choosing to hold his ground rather than fly out to press. It was a split-second business decision, but it blew open a dangerous pocket of space right between him and Şahin.

Per Kluge found Mateo in that space.

The overlay updated: Huntelaar’s run behind Subotić.

Red line. 88%.

Mateo’s right foot found the ball in one touch and angled it forward — a weighted pass into the channel, pace on it, landing in the space Huntelaar was running into. Subotić read the ball late and turned, half a stride behind.

Huntelaar was in behind the back line, one on one with Weidenfeller.

He went to Weidenfeller’s left. Low, across the keeper’s body.

2–4.

The Veltins-Arena produced a noise that was different from the previous goals — less pure celebration than a collective refusal. Fifty thousand people who had been going quiet acknowledging, simultaneously, that the match was not finished. Some of the supporters who had been moving toward the exits stopped. Some of them turned back.

In the Dortmund away section, the noise dropped. Not silence — but the specific wariness of a crowd that had been 4-1 up and comfortable and now wasn’t quite sure what comfortable meant anymore.

Klopp remained composed on the touchline, though his arms unfolded and he moved closer to the technical area line.

The system notification didn’t update — three goals was still three goals, and fifty-first-minute arithmetic said there were thirty-nine minutes to score two more against a team that had just proved they could score twice in four minutes — but something in the match’s character had shifted. The scoreboard was the same. Everything else was different.

Dortmund’s response was to press rather than defend.

Klopp’s teams didn’t convert into conservative shapes when they had leads — their system was built around intensity and the collective intelligence to maintain it regardless of score. What they did, with the lead now at two goals rather than three, was press with even more aggression, closing the window they’d seen Schalke exploit and ensuring it didn’t reopen.

The relay became harder. The passes that had flowed at two-second intervals were arriving with Dortmund players half a step closer at each reception. Şahin was now pressing alongside Bender rather than behind him. Kagawa was tracking deeper to cut the central pass that had led to the second goal.

The match entered a phase of genuine contest, two teams pressing against each other at the level of intensity a Revierderby at this stage of a contest produced.

Jones was everywhere that Dortmund wanted to go through the centre. Per Kluge covered the angles Jones couldn’t reach. Farfán and Annan were covering ground they hadn’t been covering in the first half, the shape more compact, the transitions better organised.

Neuer made a save from a Lewandowski shot in the fifty-eighth minute — nothing spectacular, the kind of save that came from good positioning rather than reflex.

Metzelder headed a Großkreutz cross clear in the sixty-first minute, getting to the ball ahead of Lewandowski with the aggressive claim of a centre-back who had spent the first half being picked apart and had something to prove.

Tom Warrick, in the EuroSport booth, with a precision that reflected eleven years of watching football at this level: ”Schalke have changed. The second half is not the same team. The question is whether thirty minutes is enough to close a gap this large. The answer, statistically, is almost always no. But this has not been a statistically ordinary match.”

The third Schalke goal came from a sequence that had been building across four minutes.

Mateo had been drawing Kagawa’s tracking run further and further from Dortmund’s defensive shape each time he dropped to receive, pulling Kagawa ten metres, twelve metres, fifteen metres from where he needed to be defensively. The first three times, Mateo had released the ball quickly enough that the pull didn’t produce anything. The fourth time, at 64th minute, Kagawa had drifted eighteen metres left of his normal position and Şahin had moved centrally to cover — creating the gap Mateo had been manufacturing.

He received from Jones in that gap, turned, and found Per Kluge with a flat pass that Per Kluge returned instantly. Overlay updated: Huntelaar in the right channel behind Hummels, who had stepped across to cover the central area Şahin had vacated.

The gap between Subotić and Hummels.

The one Mateo had named at halftime.

It was there.

He played it with the outside of his right boot — enough pace to reach Huntelaar in stride, enough curve to clear Subotić’s outstretched leg. Huntelaar collected in his stride, three metres from the edge of the area, Weidenfeller starting to move.

Huntelaar didn’t shoot. He looked left.

Raúl was there.

Magath had brought him on in the 56th minute, the moment the 2-4 scoreline had made the calculation viable: fresh legs, Champions League experience, the man who had scored three goals against Werder Bremen and knew exactly how a match changed when a striker found form.

Raúl, arriving late from the left side, received Huntelaar’s cut-back and swept it into the far corner with his right foot.

3-4.

The Veltins-Arena’s noise was different now from what it had been at the start of the second half — not the tentative optimism of a crowd that had been 1-4 and needed to believe again, but the full conviction of fifty thousand people who had watched two goals in thirteen minutes and understood that something specific and real was happening.

Mateo stood at the centre circle and looked at the scoreboard.

3-4.

[Turn the Tide — Progress: 3 of 4. One more required.]

Two goals back from three down. One more to level.

The calculation: thirty-six minutes, one goal to level, then the one more goal to win.

Klopp, on the Dortmund touchline, made his first defensive substitution of the match. Großkreutz off — already on a yellow, his role in the match over — a defensive midfielder on to compact the centre. Götze pulled back ten metres. The shape tightened.

He was protecting the lead now rather than extending it.

Dortmund squeezed tight, snapping back into their block. Narrow. Which meant the flanks were wide open.

Mateo took a light touch and drove the ball into the fresh space.
