Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The second half kicked off with Leverkusen charging forward, driven by the desperation of a team with nothing left to lose.

Heynckes had torn up the tactical blueprint entirely. At halftime, he told his squad to forget the complex traps and just play with raw instinct: press high, throw men into the attack, and let pure intensity dictate the match. It was the gamble of a master strategist who recognized his system had been thoroughly dismantled and that brute force was his last remaining weapon.

For ten frantic minutes, the chaos nearly paid off. Vidal sliced through Schalke’s midfield in the 48th minute, unleashing a stinging drive that Neuer had to tip over the bar. Kießling won a towering header at the back post three minutes later, forcing Höwedes to clear it off the line. Then, Barnetta’s curling twenty-five-yard free kick compelled Neuer into a sensational, full-stretch dive.

Yet Schalke’s defensive backbone held firm. Jones covered every blade of grass with relentless energy, sweeping up danger alongside Per Kluge in front of the back four. Deep in the pivot, Mateo read Leverkusen’s attacks before they could even materialize, snapping up loose passes and launching quick counters to keep the home side’s defense honest.

In the 56th minute, Mateo collected a loose ball near the center circle.

Lars Bender was standing ten yards away, having endured a nightmare afternoon since the initial tactical switch. He had been turned inside out in the first half, beaten by the lofted pass for the second goal, and shifted back and forth between assignments he could barely grasp. Now, with no clear role left to play, Bender was drifting across the pitch, physically present but completely lost on a tactical level.

He was furious. Not just at Mateo, but at the entire situation. He was burning with frustration over the gap between what was expected of him and what he had delivered, hit by the stinging realization that a seventeen-year-old controlling the match from deep had made him look completely ordinary on his home turf.

Mateo gathered the pass and turned smoothly. A slick La Croqueta carried him right past Bender’s initial press, shifting the ball effortlessly from left foot to right foot and capitalizing on Bender’s momentum, the exact move that had unpicked defenses all season.

Bender felt Mateo slip past him. He felt the air shift, experiencing for the third time in ninety minutes the bitter sting of being outplayed cleanly.

Lost to red-vision frustration, Bender turned and threw himself into a pursuit.

The tackle came straight from behind. Studs up. His right boot slammed into Mateo’s left ankle at full extension, a reckless challenge with zero intention of touching the ball. Mateo’s legs buckled under the impact, and he crashed face-first into the grass as the ball rolled away untouched.

Fweet—! Fweet—!

The referee did not hesitate for a single second, pulling the red card straight out of his back pocket. Bender had not been anywhere near the ball. It was a dangerous, cynical foul born purely out of spite.

A heavy silence fell over the BayArena.

Bender stood frozen over the spot of the tackle, watching Mateo lie motionless on the turf. The rage that had fueled his legs vanished in two seconds, replaced by a sickening wave of dread as the reality of his action settled in.

Mateo lay face-down, unmoving.

Jones and Per Kluge arrived on the scene first, Jones dropping to his knees with his hands hovering anxiously over his teammate, knowing better than to jostle an injured player. ”Mateo! Hey, talk to me man! Are you okay?”

Mateo’s cheek was pressed against the cold grass. His left ankle throbbed with sharp pain where Bender’s studs had struck the gap between his boot and shin guard. Beneath the surface, his innate physical durability was already absorbing the blow: no broken bones, no torn ligaments, no structural damage. Just intense surface bruising from a tackle that looked catastrophic on TV but was mechanically harmless to his body.

Nobody else on that pitch knew that.

In the three seconds he lay face-down on the cold turf, Mateo made a quick, cold calculation.

The winter break was starting right after this match, leaving three full weeks without a single fixture. If he popped back up now, shook it off, and finished the remaining thirty minutes, which his body could easily handle, Dr. Haber would end up with another absurd medical anomaly on his hands. A tackle that should have sidelined a player for months producing zero injury whatsoever would raise serious red flags. More unanswered questions. More unwanted scrutiny.

Haber already had a strange anomaly noted in his files. Bouncing back up from a televised, studs-up challenge like nothing happened would make people start connecting dots he needed kept hidden.

But if he stayed down, if the stretcher carried him off, and if the medical reports cited a severe contusion requiring a three-week recovery over the holidays, the mystery vanished entirely. Nobody questioned a player who spent his winter break rehabilitating a vicious tackle. They only questioned the ones who stood right back up.

So, Mateo stayed face-down on the grass, letting the silence grow.

”Get the stretcher!” Jones barked at the touchline, his voice tight with panic. ”Get the fucking stretcher over here now!”

The Schalke medical team was already sprinting onto the pitch.

Lars Bender trudged off toward the tunnel without looking at a single soul, the referee’s red card still raised behind him. A heavy silence hung over the BayArena, broken only by the furious boos from the travelling Schalke supporters, raw anger from fans who had just watched their rising star get ruthlessly hacked down from behind.

Over on the touchline, Magath stood like a statue, watching the paramedics load the stretcher. His face was pure stone. He had no idea the injury was an act, a truth he would not discover for another two hours, and he was burning with the genuine rage of a manager who had just lost his focal point to a dangerous, senseless tackle.

Mateo was lifted onto the canvas. He kept his eyes tightly shut to commit to the act, letting his muscles go completely limp the way he had seen genuinely broken players do. The stadium had gone so quiet that he could pick out individual voices in the crowd, someone shouting his name, another fan cursing at Bender.

Jones walked alongside the medical crew, keeping one hand firmly on the stretcher rail all the way to the tunnel entrance.

”I am okay,” Mateo whispered under his breath, low enough that only Jones could hear.

Jones looked down at him, his face still tight with worry that hadn’t fully processed the whispered reassurance. ”You’d better be.”

The stretcher disappeared into the dark corridor of the stadium. Play eventually resumed with Schalke making a quick tactical change, bringing on Jurado to fill the gap for the final stretch.

The remaining thirty minutes ticked away without further drama. Leverkusen, down to ten men, could not muster a single threat against a Schalke side defending with the grim, spiteful determination of a team protecting both a lead and a fallen teammate simultaneously.

The referee finally blew the whistle at ninety-two minutes.

Fweet! Fweet! Fweet!

Full time. Schalke 2, Leverkusen 0.

Yet nobody on the Schalke bench celebrated. The three points felt almost secondary compared to the terrifying image still looping on the giant stadium screen: the slow-motion replay of Bender’s studs crashing through Mateo’s ankle, the violent crumple of his body, the stretcher, and the silent walk down the tunnel.

Magath skipped the post-match handshakes and walked straight into the press room, delivering seven minutes of ice-cold fury. He tore into the refereeing culture that tolerated reckless tackles, emphasizing the duty clubs had to protect young talent. He never mentioned Bender by name. He did not have to. Every journalist in the room knew precisely who was in his crosshairs.

Meanwhile, in the back of the ambulance speeding through the December night, Mateo listened to the wail of the siren and thought about the three weeks ahead.

Rest. Pure, uninterrupted rest. His first real break since arriving in Germany back in July.

As the ambulance turned into the cold city streets, he finally let out a long breath and allowed himself to close his eyes.

You know the drill: Hand over those Power Stones to keep the momentum rolling!
