The Allianz Arena was red before they arrived.

Mateo saw it from the bus window as they turned off the motorway approach — the stadium’s exterior membrane lit in Bayern’s colour, seventy-five thousand people already filling the bowl, the noise reaching the road before the building was fully visible. He’d seen the Arena on screens for years. In person, at night, it looked like something that had been built to intimidate rather than simply to contain, and it was doing both effectively.

The bus pulled into the underground car park. The squad filed into the away dressing room. Magath had said everything he needed to say during the closed training session the previous morning at the Arena — the formation, the assignments, the specific instructions that had made his intentions for this match unambiguous.

Defensive counter-attack. All eleven behind the ball when Bayern had possession. Huntelaar alone up front to hold the line and run the channels if the ball came forward. Farfán on the right, Annan on the left, both operating as wide midfielders who defended first and attacked only when the turnover was clean and the space was real.

Raúl was on the bench. Magath had looked at the Bayern lineup — Ribéry, Robben, Müller, Gómez, Schweinsteiger, Van Bommel — and decided that experience in the final twenty minutes was more valuable than experience from the start. Raúl had accepted this without comment, which was itself a statement about how long he’d been doing this.

Mateo, in the tunnel, looked across at the Bayern players for the first time.

Ribéry’s scar was even more striking in person, catching the harsh tunnel light. Right next to him, Robben couldn’t seem to stand still; even in the cramped space, his movements had that restless, coiled energy of a winger who was always a split second away from a dead sprint. Schweinsteiger just stood there, carrying the calm, immovable composure of a man who had already conquered everything domestic football had to offer and was now operating on a completely different, European frequency. Beside him, Van Bommel exhaled, carrying the unmistakable aura of a captain playing through his final season — he had absolutely nothing left to prove, nothing to protect, just a job left to finish.

Across the divide, Müller’s eyes briefly met Mateo’s. He didn’t stare or try to intimidate; he just offered a quick, simple nod — a quiet acknowledgment between two young players who knew exactly what kind of stage they were stepping onto.

Mateo had bound the Partner Card to Farfán before the tunnel. Farfán would face Ribéry’s side for ninety minutes, and the 20% attribute boost — speed, reaction, positioning — would give him the tools to compete with one of the most dangerous wingers in the world. Farfán didn’t know why his warm-up had felt unusually sharp. He didn’t need to know.

The referee glanced down at his watch, checking the time.

Then, the line finally moved. With a sharp, piercing blast of the referee’s whistle, the match was underway.

Bayern didn’t waste a single second.

Gómez touched it back to Robben, who received on the right and accelerated from a standing start in a way that made the physics of the situation briefly feel wrong — zero to full pace in three steps, the ball glued to his left foot, Annan tracking but already a stride behind before the first touch had fully settled.

Robben drove at Schmitz. The left-back had positioned himself well — body turned, angle closed, showing Robben toward the outside rather than allowing the inside cut that everyone in the stadium knew was coming. Robben stopped. One touch to kill his momentum, then the cut — left foot pulling the ball sharply inside, the change of direction too fast for Schmitz’s recovery step.

Jones arrived. He threw himself across the gap Robben’s cut had opened, not to win the ball but to force the pass rather than the shot. Robben played it to Müller, who had drifted behind Per Kluge’s tracking position. Müller to Ribéry, switching the play forty metres across the pitch in two touches. Ribéry, on the left, facing Farfán and Uchida.

Ribéry received and drove at Uchida. Farfán tracked inside to cover the cut-back lane. Uchida held his ground — Ribéry went wide, back inside, the ball moving faster than the eye could comfortably follow. He found space for the shot.

Mateo was already there.

He’d started moving the moment Robben’s cut-inside had been made — toward the position where Ribéry would receive if the ball was switched. He’d read the shape before it had fully formed. By the time Ribéry had space to strike, Mateo was throwing his body across the shooting lane, the slide taking him into the ball’s path as Ribéry’s right foot connected.

The ball struck his back and bounced out for a corner.

The Allianz Arena’s noise, which had been building toward the specific crescendo of a goal, deflated into seventy-five thousand people exhaling simultaneously.

Ribéry looked at the space where his shot had been heading and then at the seventeen-year-old lying on the turf who had appeared from nowhere to block it.

Uchida grabbed Mateo’s arm and hauled him back to his feet, looking at him with a mix of awe and disbelief. ”Where the hell did you come from?”

Mateo just shrugged, casually brushing patches of loose grass off his shirt. ”The middle.”

The next twenty minutes confirmed what the opening thirty seconds had suggested.

Bayern were better. Individually, collectively, tactically — better. Their pressing was faster than Dortmund’s, their technical range wider than anything Schalke had faced, and the coordination between their front four was the product of two years under Van Gaal’s system rather than one season of assembly. They produced five shots in twenty minutes. Neuer saved two. The post saved one. Two went wide.

The score remained 0-0, which was itself an achievement.

Schalke’s relay barely functioned. Every time the ball arrived at Mateo’s feet in the midfield, Schweinsteiger or Van Bommel was there within two seconds — pressing with the specific intelligence of two experienced midfielders who understood exactly what the boy between them could do if given time. The overlay showed nothing above amber. The passing lanes were theoretical rather than actionable.

Huntelaar ran the channels alone, chasing long balls that Neuer launched forward, winning none of them against Demichelis and Van Buyten’s aerial dominance.

Tom Warrick, in the EuroSport booth: ”Schalke are defending as well as they possibly can. The problem is that Bayern at this level require more than ’as well as they possibly can.’ It’s a matter of time unless something changes.”

In the 23rd minute, something changed.

Van Bommel picked up a pass from Schweinsteiger right in the center circle and immediately began to carry it forward. He moved with the heavy, unhurried stride of a veteran captain advancing into the attacking half — a man entirely convinced that nobody on the pitch possessed the sheer nerve or capability to take the ball off his feet. He’d been imposing his will like this for fifteen years at the highest level. His passing remained laser-precise and his positional intelligence was flawless; his only real concession to age was that his turning circle was just a fraction slower than it had been when he was twenty-eight.

He pushed the ball left with his right foot, inviting the challenge.

Mateo read the intention behind it. Van Bommel’s weight was already shifting right for the pull-back before the push had fully committed. The feint was designed to draw the defender’s weight to the right, creating space for the cut back to the left. It was textbook. It had worked against every midfielder in the Bundesliga for a decade.

Mateo didn’t shift right. He extended his left foot and poked the ball away at the exact moment Van Bommel’s right foot was reaching for the pull-back — the interception arriving before the move had completed, catching the ball in the transition between feint and execution.

Van Bommel’s expression changed. The confidence that had been there a half-second ago was replaced by something closer to alarm. He turned to recover.

He was thirty-three. The turn took a half-second longer than it needed to.

Mateo was already gone.

He drove forward into the space Van Bommel’s forward run had vacated — Schweinsteiger ahead and to the right, caught on the wrong side of the press, unable to recover in time. Farfán was sprinting down the right. Annan was pushing left. Huntelaar was making his run centrally, pulling Demichelis with him.

Twenty-five metres from goal. The lanes to the wings were available — amber, developing — but Bayern’s back four was already adjusting, Lahm tracking Farfán, Badstuber closing Annan’s side.

Twenty-two metres.

No defender in front of him. Bayern had planned for his passing. Every scouting report, every pre-match analysis and every tactical instruction Van Gaal had given his defenders — all of it assumed that Silva would pass. His shot count across the entire season was in single digits. His only Bundesliga goal had been a deflection off his body. Shooting was not what he did.

That had been true until Tuesday morning.

Mateo set the ball slightly ahead of his stride and swung his right foot through it.

The contact was clean — instep, the full weight of his body behind it, Kicking Power at 80, Shooting at 80, the accumulated training of six weeks channeled into a single moment. The ball left his foot at a pace that made Butt’s dive academic — the goalkeeper went the right way, extended fully, and the ball passed six inches beyond his fingertips before striking the back of the net.

SWISH!

1–0.

The Allianz Arena plunged into a stunned, sudden silence. Seventy-five thousand people who had spent the last twenty-three minutes watching their team completely dominate were now forced to process a brutal new reality: it was 1–0 to the visitors.

High up in the corner, the tiny pocket of traveling Schalke fans erupted, unleashing a deafening roar that tore straight through the vacuum left by the home crowd.

Mateo just stood there at the edge of the eighteen-yard box, staring at the back of the net. Jones reached him first. He’d sprinted thirty meters down the pitch, and his version of a celebration was to grab Mateo by the shoulders and give him one violent, ecstatic shake.

”You actually shot,” Jones barked, a grin breaking across his face.

”Yep,” Mateo said, a rare, genuine smile cracking through his usual game face. ”I shot.”

”Mateo, you never shoot.”

”Yeah, everyone thought that,” Mateo shrugged, his eyes bright. ”Guess I do now.”

Farfán swarmed them next, followed by Huntelaar, with Per Kluge jogging up from the back line to join the huddle. The cluster tightened around Mateo the way it always did after a breakthrough, but the energy in this huddle felt completely different. It was the sudden, electric realization among teammates that the kid they thought they had figured out had just evolved right in front of their eyes.

On the touchline, Magath raised both fists. He’d seen the free kick training. He’d known the shot was coming, he just hadn’t expected it to arrive at the Allianz Arena, against Bayern Munich, from twenty-two metres, in the twenty-third minute.

Van Gaal, on the opposite touchline, looked at the scoreboard with the expression of a man whose tactical plan had been correct in every detail except the one that mattered.

He turned to his assistant and said something brief.

Seventy-seven percent possession. Eight shots to one. But that single damn shot had gone in.

Leave your Power Stones at the door, mortals!
