Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The locker room at the Veltins-Arena felt entirely different than anything Mateo had experienced over the last six weeks.

It wasn’t louder. It was actually much quieter — that heavy, suffocating silence of a squad that had just taken a massive punch to the gut and was still struggling to process it. Huntelaar was slumped on his stool with his boots off, holding one in each hand, staring blankly at the floor. Metzelder had his head tilted back against the concrete wall, his eyes shut tight. Right next to Mateo on the bench, Jones sat breathing heavily, the bandage over his eyebrow staining a dark, angry crimson at the center where his cut had broken open again during the final minutes of the half.

Nobody was shouting. Nobody was making excuses.

Conceding four goals before the break — especially a catastrophic three in the final twelve minutes — is the kind of trauma that splits a dressing room right down the middle. It either completely breaks a team’s spirit, or it sparks a dark, venomous fury in men who refuse to let a scoreboard humiliate them.

Mateo scanned the room, studying the exhausted faces around him, trying to gauge the temperature. The anger was definitely there. Smoldering, sharp, and crucially, unbroken. No one had thrown in the towel yet. That was a start.

The heavy door clicked open and Magath walked in.

He stopped dead in front of the tactics board, staring at the plastic pitch markers for a long moment without saying a word. He looked like an architect who had just spent twenty minutes watching his entire blueprint get systematically bulldozed, now quietly calculating whether to salvage the wreckage or tear it all down and start from scratch.

He reached out and snatched up a marker.

”Three things,” he said, his voice cutting through the quiet.

The locker room went dead silent.

”First: their press. It’s faster than Werder’s, faster than Twente’s. We were trying to run the relay at our normal pace and they were intercepting it because they press in coordinated waves — when one man goes, the next is already moving to cover the reset. One-touch isn’t fast enough against that. We need to go earlier. Before the press arrives, not when it arrives.”

He drew arrows on the board — positions, not names. The ball moving before the nearest yellow shirt had committed.

”Second: the positional switches. When Götze and Großkreutz swap — when Kagawa moves — our marking assignments are collapsing because we’re tracking the man and not the space. We track the space. Farfán, you don’t follow Götze when he moves inside. You hold your channel. Jones behind you covers the central space. The man who fills the gap behind Götze is their problem to find, not your problem to stop by following him.”

He tapped the board once.

”Third: Şahin’s range. The man cannot be allowed to touch the ball with time to turn at the edge of our half. Per Kluge, that is entirely on you. The absolute second that ball is worked to Şahin anywhere outside our final third, you smother him. Not Jones. You.”

Per Kluge nodded once.

”None of this is complicated,” Magath said. ”What happened in that last twelve minutes was organisation, not quality. Their quality is real and it’s better than ours tonight. But their goals came from our shape collapsing, not from them doing anything we couldn’t see coming.” He set the marker down. ”We can hold them in the second half. We cannot chase four goals. We’re not chasing four goals.”

He looked at the room.

”What we’re doing is playing the next forty-five minutes. Each sequence. Each press. Each transition.” He paused. ”And if we create opportunities — we take them properly. Not half-chances. Proper chances. And we finish them.”

Raúl, sitting quietly in the corner in his civilian gear after Magath had left him out of the starting lineup, hadn’t said a word through the entire manager’s lecture. His eyes were locked on Mateo.

Honestly, he’d been studying the kid since the moment they trooped into the dressing room.

The boy hadn’t opened his mouth. He hadn’t flinched at the scoreboard, and he wasn’t wearing that haunted, panicked look most young players get after a half like that — the expression of someone desperately praying for the nightmare to just end. Instead, he just sat there with his feet planted flat on the floor, hands relaxed in his lap, staring intently at Magath’s tactical board. He was reading the dry-erase lines with a sharp, calculating focus, looking for actionable data rather than some cheap emotional reassurance.

In that exact moment, Mateo didn’t remind Raúl of anyone else he’d ever met. He had shared pitches with seasoned veterans who possessed that rare quality — the sheer ability to just exist inside a disaster without frantically reacting to it — but he had never, not once, seen it in a seventeen-year-old. It wasn’t standard calmness, really. It felt much more like the heavy, loaded silence right before a massive decision is made.

When Magath finished, Mateo spoke for the first time since halftime.

”The space on their right side when Piszczek overlaps,” he said. ”When he goes, Subotić shifts to cover his channel. That leaves the space between Subotić and Hummels. If we draw them wide and play into that gap, Huntelaar can run onto it.”

The room waited.

Magath looked at the board. The specific sequence Mateo had described was there — Piszczek’s overlap creating the defensive shift. He’d noted it in the pre-match analysis but hadn’t emphasised it because the first half hadn’t reached the stage where Schalke were threatening Dortmund’s defensive structure.

”Yes,” Magath said. ”That’s accurate.” He sketched it on the board. ”We’ll implement it.”

Huntelaar glanced across at Mateo. Not appreciation — the look of a forward who had just had his optimal running path identified in a tactical discussion and was already computing how to exploit it.

The staff knocked.

Time.

Mateo stood and felt the system’s mission notification pulse once at the edge of his perception — not visible, merely present, the knowledge that something was operating in the background of this match that the other players had no access to. He wasn’t going to solve a three-goal deficit on his own. The system had given him SSS difficulty and an unknown reward, and he understood by now what that framing meant: it was genuinely unlikely, and it demanded football executed properly — through merit and teamwork and the trust of the people around him — rather than through any single individual moment.

Four goals was too many for individual moments.

He walked through the tunnel.

Raúl matched his pace beside him in the corridor.

”You’ve thought of something,” Raúl said. It wasn’t a question.

”I’ve thought of several things,” Mateo said. ”None of them are guaranteed.”

”Nothing is guaranteed.”

”The gap between Subotić and Hummels is real. If we can get the ball in there twice in the first fifteen minutes of the half — once from the left, once from the right — they’ll adjust. And when they adjust, something else will open.”

Raúl was quiet for a moment.

”You need the relay to work first,” Raúl said. ”Against that press, the relay requires something faster than we were playing.”

”I know.” Mateo paused at the tunnel entrance. The noise of the stadium was already audible through the concrete, fifty thousand people resettling after halftime. ”One-touch from the first pass. No hesitation, no checking for the best option. Just move it and move.”

”And trust that something will appear.”

”Yes.”

Raúl looked at him for a moment with the expression of someone who had played in Champions League finals and World Cups and knew the specific mathematics of improbable second halves — what they required, what they could produce, what they demanded of the people on the pitch.

”I’ll tell Huntelaar about the channel,” Raúl said. ”Before you head out.”

He turned back to find Huntelaar in the locker room.

Mateo stepped into the tunnel.

The noise intensified.

The second half awaited.

You know the drill, hand over those Power Stones!
