Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Bayern didn’t stop.

Klose’s arrival had completely simplified their tactical approach. There was no more intricate build-up through the thirds and no more patient recycling through Schweinsteiger and the back four. The strategy was brutal and simple: get the ball wide, then hurl it straight into the box.

Crosses rained down from Robben and Ribéry, while Altıntop delivered dangerous balls from deep whenever the primary wingers were doubled up on. Klose and Gómez attacked absolute everything, operating like twin towers rising at the near and far posts and dragging Metzelder and Höwedes into exhausting aerial duels every thirty seconds.

Mateo could barely get a whiff of the ball. When he finally did manage to pick up a loose clearance in the sixty-first minute, he tried to hold possession against the combined press of Schweinsteiger and Müller. While his footwork was sharp enough to slip past Müller, it wasn’t enough to escape Schweinsteiger. The veteran midfielder read the La Croqueta before the feint was halfway complete, forcing Mateo to quickly lay the ball sideways to Annan to avoid losing it altogether.

Annan lasted about four seconds before Robben and Altıntop surrounded him and stripped the ball clean.

Bayern’s attack rolled forward again.

In the sixty-second minute, Robben crossed from deep on the right. Gómez rose at the near post and powered a header goalward. Neuer flung himself to his left and pushed it wide, a save that drew a roar from even the Bayern fans, the grudging acknowledgement of a goalkeeper performing beyond what any reasonable person could expect.

Next came the corner. Klose, Gómez, Schweinsteiger, Demichelis, Van Buyten — five absolute giants packed into Schalke’s six-yard box, every single one of them well over six feet tall and built like a brick wall, outweighing anyone Schalke had to throw at them.

Höwedes somehow got up highest, launching himself into the air and using every bit of his jump to head the cross out of the danger zone.

The clearance dropped right to Ribéry hovering on the edge of the box. He struck it first-time on the volley with ferocious technique. It was a terrifying strike, but his contact point was fractionally off, sending the ball screaming way over the bar and deep into the upper deck.

Schalke survived. Again.

The minutes ground past with agonising slowness.

Sixty-five. Sixty-eight. Seventy.

Every passing minute was filled with relentless Bayern possession, suffocating pressure, and a wave of chances that were only kept out of the net by Neuer, the woodwork, or a desperate last-ditch tackle.

Robben came agonizingly close in the seventy-second minute, cutting in from the channel and bending a trademark left-footed curler around Neuer. The ball slammed off the inside of the far post and rattled back out into the box, where Schmitz immediately booted the rebound high into row twelve.

Magath was pale on the touchline, hands clasped behind his back, watching his team absorb punishment he couldn’t relieve with a substitution because every player he could bring on was worse than the ones already dying on the pitch.

Up in the commentary booth, Tom Warrick leaned toward his mic. ”This is absolute siege football. Bayern have enjoyed seventy-eight percent of the possession in this second half alone, piling up seventeen shots to Schalke’s three across the match. Schalke are clinging on by the skin of their teeth — surviving on Manuel Neuer, the woodwork, and a willingness to throw their bodies into harm’s way that borders on the absurd. The only question now is whether they can somehow survive another eighteen minutes.”

In the eightieth minute, Uchida’s body finally gave out.

He’d spent the entire match sprinting to keep up with Ribéry, and his legs had officially informed his brain that they were done. He grabbed his right calf and collapsed onto his back, wincing in pain.

Farfán rushed over to check on him, instantly recognizing the specific, undeniable grimace of a man suffering from full-blown cramp.

Acting quickly, Farfán grabbed Uchida’s leg and pushed it up into a standard calf stretch. He took his sweet time with it, strategically positioning his body to block Ribéry from taking a quick throw-in while the physio trotted onto the pitch.

”Boooo!”

The Allianz Arena saw right through it and erupted into a chorus of jeers.

A solid ninety seconds ticked away before Uchida finally stood up, tested his leg with a few hops, gave the ref a nod, and jogged back into position looking miraculously cured.

Just two minutes later, Annan hit the deck over on the left flank. Same calf. Same agonizing face. Same painfully unhurried recovery process while Jones hovered over him, casually striking up a useless conversation with the referee to burn even more time.

”Boooo!”

Another minute safely gone.

In the eighty-fifth minute, Huntelaar decided it was time to play his part.

Having spent the last twenty minutes stranded as a lonely island in Bayern’s half, he waited for the exact moment Philipp Lahm stepped up to take a throw-in. Then, with an expression of intense focus, the Dutchman simply sat down on the grass and began thoroughly massaging his own foot.

The referee, who was far too experienced to be fooled by the act, marched over and gave him a stern warning. Huntelaar gave a solemn, respectful nod, pulled himself up, and trotted leisurely to a different patch of turf.

On the touchline, Magath stood with a completely blank expression. He hadn’t uttered a single word to his squad about wasting time. He didn’t have to. These were seasoned pros who knew the score, looked at the clock, and understood precisely what the moment demanded.

The eighty-eighth minute.

Bayern won a corner. Altıntop delivered it. Klose and Metzelder rose together — Metzelder, bandaged, bloodied, running on whatever fuel was left in his thirty-one-year-old legs, threw himself at the ball and headed it powerfully out of the area.

The clearance dropped to Mateo, thirty-five metres from Bayern’s goal.

Before the ball had landed, Mateo saw it — Huntelaar, the man who’d been sitting on the turf stretching his foot three minutes ago, had suddenly come alive. He was sprinting toward Bayern’s half like a man released from a cage, his legs apparently functioning at full capacity despite his recent performance of total physical collapse.

Bayern’s defensive line was high. Pushed up for the corner, still resetting. Van Buyten was the deepest defender, twenty metres behind the rest.

Mateo struck the ball out of the air with his left foot.

The volley was clean and precise — a long, arcing pass that soared over the entire Bayern midfield and dropped into the channel ahead of Huntelaar’s sprint. Huntelaar collected it in stride, poked it forward with his toe, and ran.

Van Buyten chased. He was thirty-two, six-foot-five, and carrying the accumulated fatigue of a match in which he’d been defending for eighty-eight minutes. Huntelaar was thirty metres from goal and accelerating.

The gap between them didn’t close. It widened.

Twenty-eight metres. Twenty-six. Huntelaar was about to enter the penalty area.

Van Buyten slid.

It was a last-man challenge from behind — no attempt to play the ball, no realistic chance of reaching it, just the desperate calculation of a centre-back who knew that letting Huntelaar through was a certain goal and that stopping him was worth whatever came next.

His right foot caught Huntelaar’s ankle. Huntelaar went down.

Fweet—! Fweet—!

The referee reached into his pocket. Red card.

Van Buyten didn’t argue. He stood, looked at the referee, nodded once, and walked off. His teammates came to pat his back as he passed — the same wordless acknowledgement Jones had received against Twente: sometimes the foul was the right decision, even when the card was the consequence.

Free kick. Twenty-six metres from goal. Dead centre.

Mateo looked at the ball, then at the goal, then at the distance between them.

Twenty-six meters out. The exact range he had been obsessing over in training. The exact distance Beckham stood from history when he saved England against Greece. The exact spot where, all week long, his skill card had been curling balls effortless into the top corner.

He picked up the ball and walked to the spot.

You know the drill: Hand over those Power Stones to keep the momentum rolling!
