Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

The third goal arrived in the 20th minute, and once again, it belonged to Jones.

Mateo wriggled out of a double-team near the center circle, his feet flicking the ball left, right, and left again until Andreasen and Stindl ended up tangled in each other’s recovery runs. Mateo poked the ball through the gap and surged forward. Pogatetz stepped up from the back line to cover, so Mateo simply tapped a soft pass sideways.

Jones was right there. Standing at the edge of the box, completely unmarked, his right foot was already swinging through. The shot was low, hard, and struck with a conviction that would have been unthinkable from him four months ago. Fromlowitz managed to get a hand to it, but the power carried it through. The ball spun off his fingertips and rolled into the net.

3-0.

Jones wheeled toward the corner flag, ripped his shirt off over his head, and flexed his chest for the Schalke supporters with a roar that practically rattled the advertising boards.

Magath, who had been grinning ten seconds earlier, instantly started bellowing from the touchline. ”Put your shirt back on, you idiot! That is a yellow card!”

Too late. The referee was already reaching for his breast pocket. Jones accepted the booking with a simple shrug and a grin so wide it looked ready to split his face in half. Mateo jogged over and helped him pull the blue jersey back over his head.

”Was it worth it?” Mateo asked.

”Every bit of it,” Jones said, still grinning. ”Did you see those muscles? The cameras need to know.”

Farfán arrived from the wing, laughing so hard he had to double over. ”You crazy man.”

The match settled into a steady rhythm after that. Three goals up with seventy minutes remaining, and with Hannover’s spirit completely broken, the game drifted into the comfortable routine of a team conserving its energy.

Mateo tried his luck from distance once, in the 52nd minute. He picked up a loose ball thirty meters out, saw open space ahead, and let fly with his right foot.

The ball sailed high into the upper deck.

It was not close. It was not even in the same postcode as the net. His controlled finishing inside the penalty box was reliable enough, but launching a screaming long-range strike required every single mechanic to line up perfectly. This time, it had not, and the ball’s trajectory into Row Z told everyone in the stadium how much work he still needed to put in.

Raúl caught his eye across the pitch and raised an eyebrow. No frustration, just pure amusement.

”I was open,” Raúl called out.

”I know,” Mateo said, waving an apologetic hand. ”Sorry.”

”Do not be sorry. Just pass next time.” Raúl smiled, softening the edge. ”Or keep practicing those strikes until they actually go in.”

That was fair. Mateo filed the advice away. Improving his long-range shooting was at the top of his personal agenda, especially with the Champions League knockout rounds starting in about ten days. If he could sharpen his striking technique by then, distance efforts would stop being wild gambles and turn into genuine weapons.

Magath pulled him off in the 69th minute.

The substitution board went up, and Mateo jogged toward the touchline. Jurado was coming on to replace him, already bouncing on his toes at the fourth official’s side. Standard rotation, standard protection for a player returning from a supposed injury. Nothing about the substitution itself was unusual.

What happened next, however, was extraordinary.

The entire Veltins-Arena stood as one.

Fifty thousand people were on their feet, applauding. They were simply standing and clapping, a sustained, building roar of noise as Mateo approached the touchline that only grew louder after he stepped across the chalk. Old women in the upper tiers. Kids wearing oversized jerseys. Even the ultras behind the goal, who usually reserved their energy for chants and pyrotechnics, were on their feet, clapping wildly.

The sound wrapped around him all the way to the bench.

He had been away for three weeks. They had spent those three weeks reading headlines about torn ligaments, staring at wheelchair photographs, and worrying whether their best player would ever look the same. And here he was: three assists, a nutmeg, and a performance that had wrapped up the match inside twenty minutes.

Magath leaned over as Mateo took his seat. ”They missed you.”

”I was only gone three weeks, coach.”

”Three weeks is a long time when they love you.”

Mateo glanced at his manager, genuinely surprised by the unexpected warmth. Magath’s face was already back to its usual granite composure. The moment had passed, never to be brought up again.

Mateo sat on the bench and looked out at the green pitch. His chest felt tight from something he did not have a precise word for in Portuguese, German, or English. The closest feeling was belonging. He had been in Gelsenkirchen for six months. These people had lived here their whole lives. Standing in the winter cold with their palms burning from sustained applause, they were telling him he was one of their own.

Raúl and Huntelaar came off shortly after. The remaining twenty minutes passed without incident, Hannover having accepted their fate long before the final whistle blew.

The referee blew three sharp blasts.

Fweet—! Fweet—! Fweeet—!

Full time. Schalke 3, Hannover 0.

At the press conference, Magath was in the highest spirits anyone had seen from him all season.

He answered every question with the relaxed satisfaction of someone who had pulled off a brilliant maneuver and was thoroughly enjoying the aftermath. When a reporter asked about the unexpected return, Magath played it completely straight: ”The medical team cleared him on Thursday. We simply followed protocol.” When pressed on whether the injury had been exaggerated, he gave a light shrug. ”Injuries are unpredictable. Some heal faster than others. We are just grateful he recovered so quickly.”

Slomka, holding his own press conference in the adjacent room, was considerably less cheerful. He kept his remarks brief. ”We prepared for one scenario. Schalke presented another. Credit goes to them.”

A reporter asked Magath about Slomka’s pre-match confidence.

Magath paused just long enough for the room to feel it.

”Mirko is an excellent manager,” Magath said, his face entirely deadpan. ”Hannover has had a wonderful season. I am sure they will finish strongly.” He paused once more. ”We wish them the absolute best.”

The journalists scribbled down every word, knowing full well what Magath was doing. So did Slomka, right through the wall.

Tom Warrick’s match report, filed straight from the press box, summed it up cleanly: Schalke won 3-0 against Slomka’s Hannover. Mateo Silva returned and assisted three times, also received a standing ovation when substituted. Jones scored twice, including a celebration that earned him a completely unnecessary yellow card. The title race is well and alive for Schalke 04.

Back home that evening, Mateo sat in the quiet of his room and opened the system.

His Shooting still needed serious work before the Champions League knockout rounds arrived in ten days. His acceleration felt explosive after the daily garage sessions, but he needed his long-range shots to match that sharpness. The timetable was tight, but if he pushed himself every single day, he would be ready.
