Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

Carvajal brought the Puma proposal over on the Thursday before Christmas.

He spread the contract across Mateo’s kitchen table while Ana brewed fresh coffee in the background and Carlos sat in the corner, patiently pretending to read a German newspaper he still could not understand. The proposal was clean and direct: a three-year boot deal exclusive to Puma’s football line, structured with an annual retainer alongside performance bonuses tied to goals, assists, and tournament appearances. No image rights traps, no intrusive marketing language, and no requirement to appear at fashion events or pose for anything outside a football pitch.

”They came to us,” Carvajal explained. ”Not the other way around. Their top representative saw that free kick against Bayern Munich and called my office the very next morning. The first question out of his mouth was what boots you were wearing.”

”Adidas Predators,” Mateo said. ”The standard ones the club issues.”

”Exactly. You scored a goal that went viral across every sports program in Europe using boots you did not choose and have no financial deal with. Puma’s logic is simple: put their boots on the feet that hit that strike, and the product sells itself.”

Mateo looked over the numbers carefully. The guaranteed retainer was substantial for a seventeen-year-old, though modest by elite superstar standards. The performance bonuses were where the real value sat, cleverly structured around milestones he was practically guaranteed to hit if his current form held up.

”What do you think?” Mateo asked, looking up.

”I think it is a great first deal. Puma is serious, they are not asking for anything unreasonable, and they are a German brand, which carries weight when you play in the Bundesliga.” Carvajal tapped the paper. ”It is also not the biggest deal you will ever sign. When you eventually move to a massive club, these numbers will triple. But right now, at this stage of your career, it is rock solid.”

”No corporate lifestyle obligations right?”

”None at all. They want you because of the free kick, not because of where you are from or how you dress off the field. That was your condition, and this hits every mark.”

Mateo picked up the pen. He read through the entire contract one more time, slowly and thoroughly, the way he scrutinised every document. Then he signed his name on the line.

Ana walked over carrying two mugs of coffee and glanced down at the papers. ”What did you just sign?”

”A boot deal, Mãe.”

”How much?”

Carvajal told her the number. Ana set the hot coffee down very carefully, stared blankly at the figure, and then looked up at her son as if she were seeing a completely different person than the boy she had raised.

”For shoes?” she gasped.

”For boots, Mãe.”

”For shoes, Mateo!”

Over in the corner, Carlos turned a page of his newspaper and smiled quietly to himself without looking up.

Christmas arrived softly.

It was quiet, small, and far warmer than any of them had anticipated. Ana cooked enough food to feed the entire Schalke first team despite there being only three people at the table. Carlos spent his days keeping busy: he fixed a hallway shelf that had been crooked since Mateo moved in, repaired a dripping bathroom faucet that Mateo had not even noticed, and reorganized the garage equipment into a layout that made considerably more sense than Mateo’s original setup. Carlos was a man who expressed love through practical improvement, and by Christmas Eve, the entire house functioned better than it ever had.

Mateo trained hard in the garage every morning, ate lunch with his parents at noon, and spent the afternoons watching Bundesliga highlights on the couch with his father while Ana dozed off under a warm blanket. Carlos asked thoughtful questions about the matches, tactical setups, and coaching methods. He did not understand every detail, but he understood enough.

On Christmas morning, Mateo handed his parents a plain white envelope. Inside was a cashier’s check with enough money to pay off the entire remaining mortgage on their home in Brazil.

Ana opened it, read the number, closed it, opened it again, and then sat right down on the kitchen floor and cried for the third time since arriving in Germany. Carlos took the envelope gently from her hands, looked at the figure, then looked at Mateo in total silence for nearly thirty seconds.

”You do not have to do this,” Carlos said softly.

”It’s fine, Pai. It is already done.”

Carlos carefully folded the check back into the envelope and slid it deep into his jacket pocket. His hand remained inside his pocket, resting against it for a long, long time.

On the twenty-seventh of December, his parents flew back home. The goodbye at Düsseldorf Airport was much quieter than their chaotic arrival.

Ana cried, but they were gentle, normal tears of parting rather than the frantic tears of a mother terrified her son had been crippled. Carlos shook Mateo’s hand firmly, then pulled him into a tight embrace.

”Come home in the summer,” Carlos said. ”Even if it’s just for a week.”

”I will.”

”Promise me.”

”I promise, Pai.”

They walked through security. Ana turned back twice.

He came back to Gelsenkirchen. The house felt different without them. Just empty and quieter.

The Schalke squad reassembled on the second of January.

The training complex was cold, grey, and exactly as Mateo remembered it. Players trickled in by twos and threes throughout the morning, each carrying the slightly heavy, sluggish look of professional athletes who had eaten far too well over the holidays and were about to pay dearly for it.

Jones arrived at eight-thirty looking as sharp as ever, having clearly spent his entire break following Magath’s brutal home fitness regimen to a tee. Farfán arrived at nine with a fresh tan and a stylish haircut, loudly informing anyone in earshot that South America was warm and winter in Germany was a personal insult to his well-being. Huntelaar strolled in quietly, gave Mateo a subtle nod, and headed straight for the weight room without a word.

Raúl was the last to arrive at ten-fifteen, wearing dark sunglasses and a long winter coat. He spotted Mateo in the locker room and took a seat right beside him.

”How is that ankle?” Raúl asked, playing along with the public story.

”Still recovering,” Mateo replied smoothly, keeping the act going. ”Slowly.”

Raúl looked at him sideways. ”Slowly, huh?”

”That is what the medical reports say.”

”Right.” The corner of Raúl’s mouth twitched with a knowing smirk. He had clearly figured it out, or Carvajal had tipped him off, but he was far too experienced to spoil the fun. ”Well, January fifteenth is coming up. We have Hannover at home, you know?”

”January fifteenth,” Mateo agreed with a faint grin.

”I’ll make sure I’m fit by then,” Raúl said. He stood, patted Mateo on the shoulder, and walked to his locker.

”I will make sure I am fully fit by then,” Raúl said. He stood up, patted Mateo warmly on the shoulder, and headed over to his locker.

Over in the far corner sat Jamie Vardy. Having signed a short-term trial contract over the break, he was now officially a Schalke employee. He sat awkwardly on the wooden bench looking like a man who had accidentally wandered into a high-end luxury building and was far too stubborn to leave.

Vardy caught Mateo’s eye across the bustling room and gave a tiny, sharp nod of his chin. It was the universal gesture of someone declaring that he was here, and he was not going down without a fight.

Mateo nodded back.

At eleven sharp, Magath walked into the locker room. He clapped his hands together once, the loud sound echoing off the walls, and uttered the five words the entire squad had been dreading since Christmas dinner.

”Winter pre-season starts right now.”

A collective, miserable groan filled the room. Vardy, who had no idea what was actually coming, looked around at the groaning players with genuine confusion.

He would understand soon enough.
