Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

December came, and with it the cold and the final push before the winter break.

Schalke kept their momentum rolling. Round 14 at home against Mönchengladbach was a textbook 2–0 victory, with Raúl and Huntelaar finding the net, Mateo setting up one of the goals, and the result put beyond doubt by the hour mark.

Cologne away in Round 15 was a completely different beast. Slogging through ninety minutes of freezing rain, Schalke had to grind out a ugly 1–0 win, finally breaking the deadlock in the seventy-third minute when Mateo picked out Huntelaar with a slick diagonal pass that the Dutchman buried.

Then came Nürnberg in Round 16, a tense, breathless affair that almost went off the rails. After Nürnberg snatched an equalizer totally against the run of play, it took a late moment of magic from Farfán to salvage the 2–1 victory and keep the streak alive.

The real twist landed on a Saturday evening while Mateo was watching from a hotel TV instead of the pitch. Bayern stumbled. Mönchengladbach shocked them 1–0 right inside the Allianz Arena. With that slip, Bayern’s lead over Schalke evaporated to just a single point. Meanwhile, Dortmund were held to a draw by Leverkusen that same weekend, bringing the gap at the top of the table down to five.

The table was tightening. What had started as a pure survival mission was quietly turning into something nobody at Schalke dared to voice out loud. Sitting in third place, just a single point off Bayern and five behind Dortmund, they were flying. They had stormed their Champions League group with a perfect three wins from three, and they’d already walked into the country’s most intimidating stadium and knocked off the giants.

Carvajal had brought it up over the phone the week before, casually dropping it into the conversation like it was no big deal. ”You know the bookies have completely reshuffled the title odds? Schalke are third-favorites now. Right behind Dortmund and Bayern, pulling ahead of Leverkusen and the rest.”

Mateo had just let the comment slide. Title talk was for people watching from the comfort of the stands or the studio couch. Inside the dressing room, none of that noise mattered. It was still one match at a time, one grueling session at a time, building the daily grind that either delivered points on Saturday or left you with nothing.

Mateo trained every morning through December the way he’d trained every morning since July: early, alone, starting in the converted garage before moving to the club facilities. The hours kept accumulating in the system’s training counter like compound interest.

Ball control had become his main focus. With Defence at 80 and Shooting at 80, and the overall rating now past the 75 threshold that had unlocked uncapped growth, the next priority was the attribute that governed his first touch, his close control under pressure, and his ability to manipulate the ball in tight spaces where passing lanes didn’t exist.

He poured thirty points into it over November and early December. The progress was a grind now — past 80, every single tick up the ladder demanded double the sweat and hours of what came before. But the meter kept moving anyway. 81. 83. Then, on a freezing Tuesday morning in mid-December, the notification flashed: 85.

The system locked the upgrade button.

[Ball Control has reached tier threshold (85). Further development requires Overall Rating 85.]

Another cap hit. It was the same mechanism as before, a hard ceiling designed to stop any single stat from running away too far ahead of his overall rating. With his overall sitting at 82, he needed three more points of total growth before he could nudge ball control any higher.

He scanned his remaining options. Speed was stuck at 80. It was the one stat he had been itching to boost since the day he arrived, the single glaring gap defenders loved to exploit whenever they got the chance. Past 80, every single point was going to cost thirty brutal training hours. It was slow, expensive, and completely worth it.

He began dumping his points straight into Speed.

The difference showed up within a week. Mateo didn’t notice it first, but everyone else on the pitch certainly did.

Jones was the first to pick up on it during their early morning sessions. The three-person routine of Mateo, Farfán, and Jones braving the December frost before the rest of the squad even pulled up to the ground was a regular habit now.

”You’re a bit sharper off the mark these days, aren’t you?” Jones asked, watching Mateo finish a shuttle drill a full stride ahead of his usual mark.

”You think? Just trying to put the work in,” Mateo said, keeping it vague the way he always did when anyone brought up his progress.

Farfán caught it too. ”Your initial burst used to be your soft spot, but that’s gone now.” He narrowed his eyes, studying Mateo from across the pitch. ”What’s the trick?”

”Just added some extra sprint intervals to the routine.”

Farfán gave a nod, though his look said he was filing the detail away to digest later. He didn’t press for details, though. Farfán was smart enough not to waste breath on questions when he knew he wasn’t going to get a straight answer anyway.

Then, on the Thursday leading into the final league match before the break, a familiar shadow showed up at the edge of the training ground: someone Mateo hadn’t laid eyes on in over three months.

Bujerab.

He stood on the sideline in full training kit, eyes fixed on the pitch where his teammates were running through shape drills. He looked fully fit. The injury that had sidelined him since September was clearly behind him, and his light warm-up showed no trace of a lingering limp or stiffness. Yet, he had the distinct look of a man who’d walked back into his own house only to find strangers had completely rearranged the furniture.

Nobody broke rank to rush over and greet him. It wasn’t out of malice or memory loss, but simply because the relentless rhythm of a session doesn’t stop for reunions. Annan, who used to orbit Bujerab like a loyal satellite, was thirty meters away focused on a sharp passing drill with Edu. Uchida, who used to offer a reflex smile whenever Bujerab walked into a room, was locked in a deep chat with Draxler about defensive spacing and didn’t even glance up.

Bujerab watched the scene unfold, his jaw clenching slightly.

Hughes Yves strolled over, tossing him a bib in the B-team colors. ”Good to have you back. You’ll run with the second group for now, just to get your match sharpness back up.”

The B squad. Not even the A-team bench, let alone starting for the reserves. Just three months ago, he was Schalke’s focal point in attacking midfield, the man the entire setup revolved around.

”B squad,” Bujerab repeated, his voice completely flat.

”Standard procedure for a long layoff, Bujerab,” Hughes Yves replied, keeping his tone measured. ”Get some real minutes under your belt, show the gaffer you’re sharp, and then we talk about working you back in.”

Bujerab grabbed the bib without another word. Dropping it over his head, he trudged off toward the second group gathering on the far pitch. He avoided looking in Mateo’s direction. There was no point, really. Mateo’s lock on that starting spot was splashed across every tactical board, every lineup chart, and every conversation that had taken place while he was stuck in rehab.

Meanwhile, a quieter but huge piece of business went down that week: Jones signed a new deal.

A fresh three-year contract on vastly improved terms, giving him a pay bump that rewarded a three-month run of form he’d never managed at any point in his career before. He mentioned it to Mateo during their early morning session like it was no big deal, casually tossing it out while they were finishing up their post-sprint stretches.

”Three years,” Jones said, letting out a breath. ”Bought the wife a car. Signed the lease on a new place.”

”Congratulations, man. That’s huge.”

”Yeah.” Jones went quiet for a beat, staring out at the grass. ”First time a club’s actually wanted me around for three years. Usually it’s a one-year deal with an option they end up letting die.”

Mateo looked over at him. Jones gave a casual shrug, but he couldn’t hide what was sitting just underneath it: raw relief, genuine pride, and the quiet satisfaction of a guy whose career was finally on solid ground after years of bouncing around without ever really fitting in.

”You earned every bit of it,” Mateo told him.

”Yeah,” Jones said simply. ”I know I did.” No fake modesty, no sweeping it aside. Just owning it.

Later in training, Mateo shifted into a close-control drill on the far side of the pitch. The ball stayed glued to his boots with a crispness that just wasn’t there back in September. With his control stat sitting at 85, he could chop, turn, and change direction at full speed without the ball ever straying more than a few inches off his laces. Touches that would have slipped away from him three months ago were second nature now.

He wasn’t even thinking about Bujerab standing on the sidelines anymore. His mind was already miles away, locked onto Leverkusen.

It was the final match before the winter break. Heynckes’s side was sitting fourth in the table and hadn’t lost a single game at home all year. It meant going head-to-head with Ballack tracking his every step and fighting through Vidal’s relentless engine in the middle.

Just ninety more minutes. Then Christmas. Then whatever chaos the second half of the season had waiting for them.

Mateo lowered his head, touched the ball forward, and went right back to work.
