Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

After the restart, Hannover tried to mount a response.

Slomka’s hastily rebuilt plan involved pushing Ya Konan higher up as a classic target man and feeding him direct balls from deep, completely bypassing the midfield where Schalke was suffocating them. It was a sensible adjustment under the circumstances. Ya Konan was physically imposing and dangerous in the air, having netted fourteen league goals this season for good reason.

The problem was that Schalke’s defense was no longer the fragile unit it had been back in September. Metzelder and Höwedes handled Ya Konan’s aerial challenges with calm authority. Jones swept up every second ball that dropped behind the front line. Manuel Neuer, positioned behind them, read the long passes well before they arrived, coming off his line to claim or punch with the effortless composure that had made him the most talked-about goalkeeper in the country.

Hannover’s possession lasted only a minute or two at a time before Jones or Peer Kluge won the ball back and shifted it forward. The home crowd barely registered the away team’s efforts. They were focused entirely on Mateo.

Something was distinctly different about him.

It was the raw result of three weeks of relentless, isolated training showing up on the pitch in real time. His first three steps off the mark were noticeably quicker than they had been before the break. His touch was smoother, the ball coming off his boot with a crispness that made defenders miss by wider margins than they had in November. The quiet physical upgrades he had logged in his garage were expressing themselves in ways everyone in the stadium could see.

In the tenth minute, Jones won a hard tackle against Andreasen at the halfway line and hit a diagonal pass to Mateo. Pinto was pressing hard from behind as Mateo received it. Without looking back, Mateo flicked the ball backward with his heel, threading it cleanly through Pinto’s legs. A nutmeg from a standing start, executed so smoothly that Pinto did not even realize he had been beaten until the ball was already behind him.

Mateo leaned into Pinto’s body, pivoted around him, collected the ball on the other side, and drove directly into the open space.

The stadium erupted. That single moment of flair confirmed what the opening minutes had hinted at: the player who had returned from three weeks on the sidelines was not just recovered. He was better.

Up in the booth, Tom Warrick leaned toward his microphone. ”That heel flick through his marker was exceptional. Silva’s touch looks sharper than at any point this season. Whatever his rehabilitation program involved, it has clearly worked wonders.”

In the executive stands, Carvajal watched the match with his phone set to silent.

The device had been buzzing continuously since the third minute. He had glanced at the screen before turning off the ringer: Bayern’s recruitment director, two Premier League clubs whose names would make most agents break into a sweat, an intermediary from Real Madrid, and Carl from Manchester United, who apparently never stopped calling regardless of the hour or time zone.

The winter transfer window had closed, but everyone in European football knew the math. Schalke had less than half a season left under Mateo’s current contract structure. The hundred-million-euro release clause was a deterrent, not an insurmountable wall. Three or four elite clubs in the world could pay it outright, and at least two of them were blowing up Carvajal’s phone right now.

He had given all of them the exact same response: at the end of the season, Mateo decides, and not a day before. Some accepted it gracefully. Carl accepted it gracefully every time and then called back two weeks later anyway, which Carvajal found equal parts annoying and reassuring.

He watched the replay of the nutmeg on the giant stadium screen and allowed himself a quiet smile. Let them call. The better Mateo played, the stronger his leverage became, and right now his client was delivering the kind of performance that forced front offices to act before halftime.

The second goal arrived in the 15th minute.

Mateo had been drifting across the pitch, dragging Pinto along with him and creating overloads wherever he moved. Over on the left, Stindl and Andreasen doubled up on him as he received a pass from Schmitz. Two defenders blocking the forward lane, attempting to force him sideways.

Mateo used both feet to shift the ball back and forth between them, keeping his touches so tight that both defenders kept lunging without ever getting a toe to it. On the third shift, he poked the ball cleanly through the gap between Stindl and Andreasen and exploded past them, leaving both men spinning around.

Jones was already charging forward from midfield. He had read the break the instant Mateo started his footwork, bursting out of his holding role into the empty space Hannover’s scrambled defense had left open at the edge of the box. Mateo spotted his run, and as Pogatetz stepped across to cover, the layoff was obvious.

Mateo tapped a soft pass sideways with his right boot. Jones arrived in stride at the edge of the area, totally unmonitored.

Jones did not hesitate. He struck it first-time with his right foot, driving a low shot across the keeper. Fromlowitz had his view blocked by two of his own defenders still recovering from Mateo’s run, and by the time he saw the ball, it was already nestling into the bottom corner.

The referee blew his whistle as the net rippled.

Fweet—!

2-0, Schalke.

Jones wheeled away, arms pumping, the grin splitting his face. Mateo found him and jumped on his back, which Jones absorbed without breaking stride because carrying a seventeen-year-old Brazilian on his shoulders was apparently within his physical capabilities.

”Two goals in two matches, man!” Jones roared over the deafening crowd. ”What is happening to me?”

”You are becoming a proper striker,” Mateo shouted down from his shoulders.

”But I am a defensive midfielder!”

”Tell that to the scoreboard!”

Farfán jogged over, clapping his hands and laughing. Huntelaar arrived with a broad, approving nod. Over at the center circle, Raúl raised a single hand, a quiet gesture of acknowledgment that carried more warmth than a wild celebration.

Up in the commentary box, Tom Warrick leaned into his mic. ”GOAL! Jones scores again! The defensive midfielder who smashed a long range screamer against Bayern now has his second goal in two matches. Naturally, it comes from a Mateo Silva layoff. That makes two assists for Silva today. For a player who was supposedly bound to a wheelchair three weeks ago, this is quite the recovery.”

Across the pitch, Slomka turned to his assistant. His assistant looked down at the tactical board, but the plastic board offered zero answers for what was happening on the grass.

Magath stood with his arms folded, watching his squad celebrate with a expression that tried very hard to remain stoic, but failed slightly. He had spent three solid weeks managing a high-stakes deception, enduring press conferences about medical timelines and recovery protocols. This was the payoff. This was what the garage sessions, the wheelchair photos, and the straight-faced lies to journalists had all been building toward.

Fifteen minutes played. Two goals on the board. The match was already decided in every way except the clock.
