Football: Maxed Out The Wrong Stat

On Wednesday of the second week, Mateo called Carvajal.

”I need you to find a player for me,” Mateo said.

Carvajal, who was eating lunch at his desk in Gelsenkirchen, set his fork down. In four months of representation, Mateo had never asked him for anything outside his own career. Contracts, commercial endorsements, home equipment, yes. Scouting other footballers, never.

”Go on,” Carvajal said.

”His name is Jamie Vardy. He plays for Halifax Town.”

A pause lingered on the line. ”Halifax Town?”

”It is in the Conference North. The sixth tier of English football.”

A longer pause followed. ”Mateo... why do you know about a player in the sixth tier of English football?”

”I watch a lot of obscure clips online,” Mateo replied smoothly. ”He is ridiculously fast, he finishes with raw instinct, and he is twenty-three. Nobody in professional football knows who he is right now.”

”And did you not consider that there might be a good reason for that?”

”The reason is that he was released by Sheffield Wednesday’s academy at sixteen and spent three playing semi-pro. He is not bad. He was just overlooked.” Mateo paused. ”I want Schalke to bring him in for a trial.”

Carvajal leaned back in his leather chair. He had represented Raúl for two decades and had never once received a transfer recommendation from a teenage client. The traditional hierarchy moved in the opposite direction: agents scouted players, directors evaluated them, and managers decided. Not the reverse.

”How confident are you?” Carvajal asked.

”Extremely.”

”Can you tell me why?”

”I cannot explain the full reason right now. But I am asking you to trust me.”

Carvajal thought about the last four months. When this particular seventeen-year-old said he was confident about something football-related, the smart move was to listen.

Vardy arrived in Gelsenkirchen on Friday.

”Fine, I’ll make the call,” Carvajal said with a sigh.

He flew straight from Manchester carrying a single worn duffel bag and wearing a tracksuit that had seen considerably better days. He was twenty-three, wiry, pale in that distinct way English lads got in the dead of winter, and he walked through the arrivals gate at Düsseldorf looking completely stunned. Six days ago, he had been playing in front of eight hundred people at The Shay. Now he was stepping into industrial Germany.

Carvajal picked him up. The drive to Schalke’s training complex took forty minutes, during which Vardy uttered roughly twelve words, mostly variations of ”yeah” and ”cheers.” He was not being rude; he was simply overwhelmed, choosing to cope by shrinking his vocabulary to absolute basics.

Hughes Yves met them at the pitch gate. Magath had agreed to the trial strictly on Carvajal’s recommendation, which in reality meant Mateo was behind it, and Magath had learned never to dismiss anything Mateo was involved in without a second thought.

”Alright, Vardy, you have got one session,” Yves said, tapping his stopwatch. ”Show us what you can do.”

Vardy warmed up alongside the B-team squad, who eyed his worn boots, faded tracksuit, and rough posture with polite curiosity.

Bujerab was out there too, working his way back from a nagging injury. He watched Vardy stretch with visible confusion, wondering what this unknown English guy was doing on the same turf.

The technical possession drill came first. Vardy was out of his depth almost immediately. His first touch was heavy compared to players who had been refined in professional academies since age eight. His short passing was direct but mechanically limited. In a tight, high-speed rondo against Bundesliga-standard players, he looked like exactly what he was: a non-league forward who had never experienced this level of technical pressure.

Yves made a swift note on his clipboard, and the posture was far from impressive.

Then came the speed tests.

Vardy’s first thirty-meter sprint made Yves snap his head up from the clipboard. His second sprint made him lower the clipboard entirely. The third made him check if his digital timer was malfunctioning.

It was not. Vardy was simply that fast.

He covered thirty meters in a time that rivaled any elite winger in the Bundesliga first division. Not just fast for a sixth-tier player, but terrifyingly fast by any international standard.

”Alright,” Yves muttered to himself, clearing his throat. ”Move to the finishing drill.”

The finishing drill was standard: driven crosses served from wide areas, requiring the forward to adjust on the run and finish inside the box. It tested technique, spatial awareness, and composure.

Vardy’s first touch betrayed him on the opening three deliveries. The ball bobbled slightly behind him, forcing awkward adjustments that cost critical fractions of a second. His initial attempts were rushed and wide.

On the fourth ball, something shifted.

The cross whipped in low and hard from the right flank. Vardy’s movement off the defender’s shoulder was pure instinct. He arrived at the near post on a dead sprint and struck the ball first-time. No backlift, no hesitation, just clean, violent contact. The ball thundered in off the far post with a crack that made three B-team players freeze and turn around.

He scored five of the next seven deliveries. Each finish was different, executed with a ferocious directness that no academy textbook could teach. It stemmed from somewhere far deeper: years of factory shifts, brutal non-league tackles, and a decade of being told he was not good enough, all channeled into a right boot that struck the ball like it owed him money.

Yves walked to the sideline, pulled out his phone, and dialed Magath.

”Hello, Boss,” Yves said as soon as the line connected. ”The player Mateo recommended through Carvajal... his touch is rough. His passing is basic. His positional discipline needs heavy work.”

”And?” Magath asked over the line.

”He is the fastest athlete I have timed all season,” Yves replied softly. ”And he finishes like he has a personal grudge against the back of the net.”

A brief pause followed. ”What is his valuation?” Magath asked.

”He is on a non-league contract. The transfer fee would be pocket change. Fifty thousand pounds at most.”

”Bring him to my office tomorrow morning,” Magath instructed.

That evening, Mateo found Vardy sitting alone in the club canteen, picking through a dinner plate he had put together by pointing at items he recognized on the menu.

Mateo pulled out a chair and sat across from him. Vardy looked up, momentarily startled to find the most talked-about teenager in German football casually joining his table.

”How did it go?” Mateo asked.

”The passing drills were right proper ugly,” Vardy admitted, his thick Sheffield accent clipping every vowel. ”Couldn’t keep up with their touch-and-move stuff. Felt like a right muppet.”

”And the rest of it?”

A sharp grin crept across Vardy’s face. ”Outran the lot of ’em. Put a few in the net.”

”You scored five out of seven on the cross routine.”

Vardy blinked, pausing. ”How’d you know that?”

”Yves told me.”

Vardy studied him for a long moment, his eyes narrowing slightly. ”Why’d you recommend me anyway? You don’t know me. You’ve never seen me play live.”

”I have seen enough to know what you can do.”

”Come off it. That is not a real answer.”

Mateo considered how much truth he could share without sounding insane. ”I think you are far better than the division you are playing in. I think the reason you are stuck in the sixth tier is not a lack of talent, but a lack of exposure. And I believe if someone gives you a proper platform, you will tear it apart.”

Vardy stared across the table. Beneath the initial culture shock and awkwardness, a hard, relentless steel showed through, the sheer stubbornness of a man who had been told no for ten straight years and kept running anyway.

”Yeah,” Vardy said quietly, his jaw setting tight. ”I will.”

”Good. The Boss wants to see you in his office tomorrow.”

Vardy nodded, returning to his food. After a moment, he looked back up.

”Cheers,” he added awkwardly. ”For whatever this is.”

”Do not thank me yet,” Mateo chuckled, standing up from the table. ”Thank me after you survive a Boss’s pre-season.”

Vardy had zero idea what that actually entailed, but he was about to find out soon enough.
