Apocalyptic Reincarnation: Start with a 30-million Bonus

Everyone felt a sense of lingering fear.

If Dapao and his team hadn’t braked in time and swerved, their vehicle would have plunged straight into the river.

The vehicles following them, had they not noticed Dapao’s braking in time, would likely have crashed into them, resulting in several vehicles tumbling into the river.

Fortunate!

At the same time, everyone was puzzled by the appearance of sand and stones here, judging by the sand beneath, it must have been scattered not long ago.

With the apocalypse having lasted this long, especially in the beginning, many places were submerged, and a lot of mud settled on the roads.

Although this particular road didn’t seem to have been submerged, there shouldn’t be so much sand.

Who exactly are those despicable people who did this?

Fortunately, no one was injured.

Li Yu pondered over the sand on the ground for a while before taking out the walkie-talkie to speak with everyone, ”Attention everyone, the appearance of this sand may not be an accident. Stay alert, also, slow down the vehicles in case we encounter similar situations ahead.”

”Received.”

”Received.”

”Received.”

Responses came from the earpieces from various vehicles.

Li Yu glanced at the map; they were now at the border between two cities, and also between two provinces.

A cold glint flashed in his black eyes as Li Yu raised his head to survey the surroundings of the road.

The river water flowed, with the sound of gurgling water.

Other than that, there were no bird calls.

All was quiet.

Li Yu waited on the spot for a while, then signaled for everyone to continue driving.

The lathe—he had to get it, no one could stop him.

After passing this section, they would enter the territory of Chen City.

On their way, no more incidents like the earlier one occurred, and they arrived in Chen City smoothly.

It was now twelve o’clock noon. Since they had started out late today, not departing until 8:30.

So Li Yu and his companions simply ate something in the vehicle.

On the Unimog, Li Yu called He Bing into the vehicle, the skidding incident earlier had raised his vigilance.

Inside the vehicle.

Li Yu said to He Bing, ”Take a seat. Let’s eat together.”

He Bing looked at the steaming bowl of noodles in front of him. It was normal for the Unimog to have cooking facilities to make noodles.

But in these noodles, there were some slices of meat and a few leaves of greens, with a fragrance that wafted into his nostrils.

He felt somewhat uneasy; the recent vehicle skidding had left him feeling insecure.

According to reason, when he came here last time, there were no such sands and stones.

Moreover, there was so much of it, a continuous stretch of sand for more than twenty meters.

Li Yu picked up a pair of chopsticks, smiling warmly as he said, ”Try out my cooking skills.”

While speaking, he picked up the noodles with the chopsticks.

Slurp～

Li Yu’s eating was hearty, yet it made the food seem especially appetizing.

He Bing glanced at Li Yu and nervously said, ”Thank you, Director Li.”

Then he dove into the bowl of noodles in front of him; it had been a long time since he last had meat and vegetables.

The moment the noodles entered his mouth, he felt an impulse to cry tears of joy.

Before the apocalypse, such easily obtainable things had become incredibly precious in this resource-scarce apocalyptic world.

Slurp～

He Bing seemed to be influenced by Li Yu and started to eat his noodles with big bites too.

The tension in his heart had also lessened compared to just before, and the aroma of the noodles made him forget about the anxiety he had felt before getting on the vehicle.

While eating the noodles, Li Yu was also discreetly observing this young man sitting across from him.

From the moment he got on the vehicle, seeing how he nervously clenched his jacket, to the unnatural expressions that surfaced when he sat down later.

Nervousness was normal, after all, outside the base, the news He Bing heard about Li Yu and the image he saw were both of an extremely ruthless Li Yu.

The sand incident that had just happened also made him somewhat scared.

This was the road he had led them on, and if anything unexpected happened, he was the one responsible.

Li Yu ate his noodles while surreptitiously watching He Bing, lost in thought.

He Bing was now also considered a part of the base, although he hadn’t moved into the base to live, he still received a food subsidy every month.

To those outside the base, this was a precious opportunity indeed.

Moreover, back in Jiefang City, He Bing knew Old Lü and the others, and Li Yu had also chatted with those who had been in Jiefang City recently, asking about their opinions on He Bing.

A craftsman expert, very enthusiastic, responsible, capable.

Basically, all feedback he received was praise for He Bing.

The two men ate their noodles without Li Yu uttering a single word.

Eating while asking questions could lead to a loss of appetite.

They both finished their meal quickly; Li Yu ate at a fast pace, and after finishing, he wiped his mouth and just quietly gazed out of the window.

Seeing that Li Yu had finished eating, He Bing sped up and wolfed down the remaining noodles in his bowl in just a few bites.

After eating, he stood up and took his own, as well as Li Yu’s bowls and chopsticks, to wash them clean.

After cleaning, he sat down honestly in front of Li Yu and didn’t know what to say for a while.

The two of them remained silent for a few minutes.

The tense feeling that He Bing had just experienced came rushing back; though Li Yu did not speak, he exuded an incredibly strong sense of pressure.

Suffocating.

Li Yu suddenly spoke, ”You guys went to that factory before, right?”

Finally hearing Li Yu’s voice seemed to relieve the oppressive feeling in the vehicle.

Li Yu’s words were slow and calm, seemingly devoid of much emotion.

He Bing hurriedly said, ”Yes, we didn’t dare get too close. When we saw people, we didn’t go in.”

Li Yu nodded and said, ”Mhm, you did well.”

Then he asked with a concerned tone, ”What about your family after the apocalypse broke out?”

Faced with this question, He Bing fell silent.

After a dozen or so seconds, He Bing spoke up, ”They all died. When the zombie outbreak happened, I happened to be outside and didn’t go home, ...”

His voice was hoarse.

Li Yu said consolingly, ”It’s not your fault, this apocalypse has affected many people like you, surviving is surely what your family would have wished for you to do.”

He Bing nodded, recalling the difficult struggle for survival with his classmates after the apocalypse, nearly starving to death, and then thinking of Li Yu starting the food exchange, saving them from the brink of starvation.

Then journeying all the way to the present, having joined the Big Camphor Tree Base as Extra Staff, watching the days gradually improve.

He looked at Li Yu with gratitude and said, ”Thank you, Director Li, we might have starved to death without you.”

Li Yu waved his hand, saying, ”We all have our needs; I’m not a hero.”

He Bing didn’t know what to say for a moment, recalling suddenly the halfway sand and stone, his emotions surged, and he blurted out, ”Director Li, there is something I need to report to you, last time when we came here, there were no sand and stones on that road.”

Upon hearing this, Li Yu smiled and said, ”It’s nothing, maybe other survivors were transporting sand and it fell off.”

He Bing thought for a moment and said, ”But it wouldn’t be just on that one stretch of the road, would it?”

Li Yu nodded and said, ”No worries, we’ll tackle issues as they come. You can go back for now, in five minutes, head to that factory, you’ll lead the way.”

Seeing Li Yu’s demeanor, He Bing had nothing more to say, and replied, ”Okay.”

After speaking, He Bing left the vehicle.

Li Yu watched him leave, then turned his gaze back to the outside of the vehicle.

A flicker of contemplation crossed his eyes.
