Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 128: 128 This is also happiness

The ten of them finished off two big bowls, ”Xinyu, these big prawns are really tasty,” said Xiao Yun, smacking her lips.

”Right? I also think they’re delicious, happiness is being able to eat good food.”

”Comrades, I want to exchange some teacups with you, I don’t have any at home.”

”Ma’am, we can only exchange with dried goods,” Meng Fanxing stepped up to negotiate.

”Sure, what do you want to exchange for?”

”Any dried goods will do.”

They used eight teacups to exchange for ten pounds of kelp, three pounds of razor clam meat, and mussel meat. Not the kind that’s cut into strips like in the future, you’ll have to soak it and cut it into strips yourself later on.

”Ma’am, if I were to buy these, how much would it cost per pound? Do you have any other dried goods?” Jiang Xinyu didn’t bring anything to exchange, so she had to buy them with money.

”The purchase station pays thirty cents a pound for kelp, and eighty cents a pound for clam meat and such.

We still have ten pounds of peeled shrimp meat at home. This one’s expensive, one yuan a pound.”

”Ma’am, I’ll buy all the peeled shrimp meat. Is one yuan a pound okay?”

”Why not? I’ll pack it up for you.” It saves me from going to the purchase station.

Jiang Xinyu took the snakeskin bag and took a look. It was indeed quite dry and large. The color was nice too, clearly peeled when fresh.

She happily handed over ten yuan. ”Ma’am, I still need quite a bit of clam meat and peeled shrimp meat. Could you please help me ask others? I’ll wait at the educated youth spot.”

”Okay, wait for me. I’ll tidy up and then go ask for you. Don’t worry, we’re all honest people, all good stuff.

Oh, by the way, we also have dried sea fish and shrimp meat, do you want them?”

”Ma’am, I’ll take as much shrimp meat as you have. If there is any shrimp skin, that would be even better. I’ve had dumplings stuffed with Chinese chives and shrimp skin before, they’re so delicious.”

”You can have whatever you want, we still have ten pounds of shrimp meat at home, it’s also one yuan a pound if you want.

The village has shrimp skin, we eat it every day, I don’t think it’s anything special.”

Jiang Xinyu grinned from ear to ear, imagining three-fresh stuffing dumplings, so delicious that her mouth watered.

The other nine people looked at her as if she were a mouse that fell into a rice jar, thinking Jiang Xinyu was still like this because she was young.

The ten of them returned to the educated youth spot, Wang Ailing tidied up the room, with a kang mat now they could lie down.

Liu Yuwei drew some water, and everyone washed their faces.

”This water is so bitter.”

”This is a saline-alkali land, the underground water naturally has this taste.

Sis, you can buy a bag of sea salt and let my aunt pickle some salted vegetables.”

”Sure, I’ll bring a bag back. It’s too much hassle to buy salt from the supply and marketing cooperative.”

A few male comrades brought out all the porcelain and put it on the ground.

The three girls lay in the inner room, though they couldn’t sleep, just purely resting. There was still a full night sleep, it’s rare to come once, they must look around and see what is here?

After an hour, people came one after another. They brought all kinds of things, but Jiang Xinyu only accepted shrimp meat, peeled shrimp meat, and clam meat.

After this hour, she amassed a hundred pounds of each kind, which was no small sum, ”Xinyu, what do you need so much seafood for?”

”To slowly eat later, this is good stuff. If there’s no meat, having some of this isn’t bad. You can also buy some more, who knows when we’ll come again next time?

Secretary Wang, doesn’t your steel plant have the best benefits? Don’t they give workers perks at the start of the year? You could come here to order seafood. It’s a good deal.

At our textile mill, I proposed sending seafood this year to appease everyone’s cravings.”

”Alright, I’ll go back and write a report too.”

For lunch, they ate corn cakes stewed with mixed sea fish. Although there were many small bones, it was delicious. Soaking the cake in fish soup gave it an amazing flavor.

In the afternoon, a few more families came, but Jiang Xinyu didn’t exchange anything.

They had cornbread kelp soup for dinner.

”Shall we come again if we get a chance?”

”Sister She, we should come when we’re craving,” Jiang Xinyu said with a hearty laugh.

Washing up for the night, lying on the earthen bed with just a kang mat, Jiang Xinyu honestly felt uncomfortable and couldn’t sleep.

However, influenced by the two sleeping soundly beside her, she soon fell into a deep sleep.

Early the next morning, they still bought big prawns and ate them right there until they were full, found the village chief, and each bought ten pounds of shrimp skin. Wang Ailing also wanted twenty pounds of sea salt, Wang Fangtian also wanted the name of the village, the village chief’s name, and the phone number for the township, agreeing to call them if they decided to visit again, giving them time to prepare.

The village chief was naturally happy, this way everyone had some hope.

Biking under the blazing sun at noon was torturous, Jiang Xinyu felt two shades darker.

They got home at eight in the evening. Jiang Xinyu didn’t want to move at all, but feeling sticky and uncomfortable, she still took a shower, not even waiting for her hair to dry before falling asleep.

The next morning, she packed her things into space. Wang Ailing’s things were put into the spare room, she was going back this week.

Considering a bit more, Jiang Xinyu left the shrimp skin Wang Ailing bought on a bamboo sieve, worried it might spoil in the hot weather.

Better to spread it out in a shady place. There are still five days left.

She cleaned the two bicycles again and took ten skirts to work.

”Director Jiang, how did you get so tanned?” Song Qingqing was startled seeing Jiang Xinyu.

Jiang Xinyu gave a bitter smile, now she was truly tanned and skinny.

”I biked to the seaside over the weekend, turned out like this.”

”Director Jiang, I’m a non-local, unfamiliar with things here. Could you call me next time you go out on weekends?” Although she’s the leader, she’s younger than me, so Song Qingqing gathered the courage to speak up.

”Sure, I haven’t planned anything yet, but if I do go out, I’ll call you.”

Qian Jun was also startled, upon finding out the truth, he joked, ”Director Jiang, you should treat me to a meal, right? You got to enjoy good food; shouldn’t we, as trench comrades, share the blessings?”

”Mr. Qian, I have shrimp skin, peeled shrimp meat, shrimp meat, not sure what you’d like to eat? How about I bring you some tomorrow?”

”Director Jiang, you’re not being sincere.” He walked into his office with a smile.

Jiang Xinyu shrugged behind him, there really was no way to be sincere, in this heat, even if she prepared delicious food to bring, it would spoil by the time they ate it. Besides, in this summer heat, who wants to cook? It’s tough work.

It was Friday morning again, and at noon, Wang Ailing specially found Jiang Xinyu, ”Xinyu, are you going back this week?”

”Sure, shall we bike back after work in the evening?”

”Alright, we’ll have company, no worries in the dark.”

There was a regular meeting on Friday afternoon, and after it ended, Kong Mengjie found Jiang Xinyu.

”Are you two going home?”
