Rebirth in Famine: She Thrives by Lucky Space

Chapter 107: 107 female lead

Jiang Xinyu pushed her bicycle and walked out.

”Xinyu, Jiang Xinyu.”

Helplessly stopped, ”Kong Mengjie, you’re heading home? You won’t catch the ride, will you?”

”Yeah, I have some things today, so I won’t be going back. What time are you leaving tomorrow?”

”Eight o’clock. If you’re not going back, just stay in the dormitory; it’s not safe outside.”

”Okay, I know. I’ll ride with you tomorrow, so I’ll have some company.”

”Alright, anything else?”

”Xinyu, are you in a hurry?”

”No, it’s just that after work, I want to go home and rest. It’s getting late, so I’ll head off now.” There’s no interest in taking Kong Mengjie home, and soon enough, she’d start hinting about wanting to go to my place.

Kong Mengjie watched Jiang Xinyu’s departing figure, seething with resentment. However, thinking about the person she was going to meet tonight, a smile crept onto her face.

”Mengjie, Mengjie, what are you doing? Weren’t you going home today?”

”Zhongshuo, aren’t you on the night shift?” Kong Mengjie’s face showed a fleeting moment of discomfort.

”Yes, I just came home. Come back with me, will you?”

”I’m not going. Your sister and mom don’t think much of me. Zhongshuo, we should just let it go.”

”Don’t say that. I won’t agree to it. I’m not going back. Come, I’ll take you out for dinner.”

Kong Mengjie shook her head, ”I’m not going.” With that, she ran toward the dormitory. She had to make sure he focused only on her and didn’t listen to his mom.

Zhao Zhongshuo chased after her for a while, but when he saw her enter the dormitory, he was too embarrassed to continue. The men’s and women’s dormitories prohibited opposite sexes from entering.

He left angrily and went home where he saw his mother cooking and his younger sister sitting by the fire. He couldn’t hold back his anger any longer.

”Why don’t you approve of Kong Mengjie? What’s wrong with her?”

Mrs. Zhao looked up at her son, ”Who told you I don’t approve of Kong Mengjie? She just came by a few times. What am I supposed to approve or disapprove of? Are you really speaking to me like this over a woman?”

”Mom, that’s not what I meant. Today, Kong Mengjie said she wants to break up with me. I’m not willing. I didn’t even get a chance to become group leader because of her.”

”Hmph! That’s because she’s found someone better.”

”Impossible. It’s because of your attitude that she wants to break up with me.”

”You shouldn’t take it out on your sister. If you have the ability, just marry her yourself. We both have no objections, and in the future, we won’t meddle in your affairs.”

”Mom!”

”Don’t call me. You’re not that young anymore. It’s indeed time for you to settle down. You decide.”

Zhao Zhongshuo returned to his room, dejected.

Kong Mengjie waited for a while, thinking Zhao Zhongshuo should have left by now, and only then did she leave, heading towards the residential area not far from the textile factory.

She took out a key to open the door and went in.

Seeing the yard still fairly tidy, this director’s house was quite clean.

Kong Mengjie knew that the director’s wife and children stayed in the countryside. Here, he only had his own food tickets, which weren’t enough for the whole family.

He asked her to come over to tidy up the house, but it looked pretty organized already. Still, she took out a broom and started sweeping the yard.

Huang Hongwei specifically bought food from the cafeteria for two, thinking about the girl at his house, feeling a rush of warmth.

Entering the yard, seeing no one outside, he excitedly went inside.

Kong Mengjie was kneeling on the brick bed, cleaning it when Huang Hongwei came in and saw this scene. He wanted to rush over immediately but knew he shouldn’t.

”Xiao Kong, thank you.”

”Director, no need. Girls are always better at tidying up a house than men.

Everything’s clean now, so I’ll just head back.”

”Don’t be like that. How could I let you leave? I’ve bought food, and there are eggs at home. I’ll fry some eggs; you should stay to eat.

If you refuse, I might not dare invite you next time.”

”Thank you, Director Huang.”

”No need to be formal. Just call me Brother Huang. Wait a moment, and I’ll fry some eggs.”

He said this and went to fetch firewood to start a fire, bolting the main door. He decided to go all out today; these were sent from his hometown a while back. To please the girl, he cracked four eggs.

Eggs cook quickly, and they were done in no time. He hurriedly placed them on the brick bed table.

”Xiao Kong, quickly, sit over here, let’s eat. Can you drink?”

”Director Huang, I can’t.”

”Come on, drink a little, it’s homemade, grain-fermented, all good stuff.”

Huang Hongwei poured two bowls of wine, ”Come, Xiao Kong, try some. Are you looking down on me by not eating or drinking?”

”Director Huang, I absolutely don’t mean that. I’ve actually never drunk before. Please go ahead.”

”I order you to drink. Refusing means you’re being disrespectful.”

Kong Mengjie’s face turned pale, thinking she hadn’t even appeased Director Huang and now he was upset with her.

”Xiao Kong, sit down and eat. Try this wine. Your sister-in-law in my house can drink two big bowls without a problem.”

Kong Mengjie climbed onto the brick bed and sat facing Huang Hongwei.

”That’s right, try my fried eggs. They’re delicious. Go ahead and eat. There are buns in the lunchbox, eat some to fill your stomach.” Saying this, he helped Kong Mengjie to a big piece of golden yellow egg.

”Mmm, tasty.”

”If it’s good, have some more,” he said, giving her another big piece.

Huang Hongwei watched her finish, quickly picked up the wine bowl, ”Come, let’s have a drink together.”

Kong Mengjie had no choice but to rim her bowl with his. She sipped a bit; it didn’t taste good, but it was drinkable.

And so, the two of them downed a big bowl of wine each, drinking sip by sip.

By this time, Kong Mengjie was already tipsy.

”Xiao Kong, your work performance is excellent. You’re about to have a chance to be selected as group leader. I’m rooting for you.”

Kong Mengjie looked at Director Huang in surprise, ”Really? Thank you so much, Director Huang.”

”No need to be formal. It’s because of your work performance.

Let me tell you, many people want that position, but I just think you’re the most suitable.”

”Thank you for the recognition, Director.” Kong Mengjie gazed hazily at the middle-aged man across from her, thinking he’s really a good person.

”I already said, don’t be formal, come on, eat.”

Kong Mengjie’s hands were unsteady, and she spilled the wine bowl on herself.

”Oh dear, how careless. Let me help you wipe it up.” Huang Hongwei’s hand reached over.

Even though she was drunk, Kong Mengjie knew this wasn’t right and quickly backed away, ”No need, I can do it myself.”

But how could she possibly escape the premeditated grasp of a married middle-aged man?

No matter how she struggled, she couldn’t break free, and yelling was useless. Huang Hongwei’s neighbors were also textile factory workers; both families had worked the night shift prior, which was why he chose today.

In the end, Kong Mengjie still fell victim to Huang Hongwei.

By the time he entered, Kong Mengjie realized everything was over, and tears streamed down her cheeks.

Huang Hongwei didn’t care about any of this; he’d had his eyes on Kong Mengjie for a long time, and now that he’d succeeded, how could he let go?
