She is the Side Character! — Watch Her Change her fate!

Chapter 46: Chapter 46: The Young Master Is a Woman 46

Three months have passed, and Beixia finally got through the hardest times.

The losses were great, with many casualties, but disaster-stricken areas were well controlled with no disease outbreaks, which is much better than being unprepared. The people who survived the floods were well settled.

One could say everything was under control; except for unforeseen events caused by natural disasters, the prevention of man-made disasters was well-managed, things that could happen were anticipated by Ah Chen and Ye Ji, who made early arrangements.

Prepared for the northern droughts, the impact was not particularly severe.

As the floods ended, the north experienced its first rain, as if informing the people of Beixia that everything was over.

Surrounding small disaster-stricken countries secretly obtained a lot of supplies from the Ximo Dynasty, barely making it through the toughest times.

By the time the Emperor of Ximo discovered it, the false Xiao Changsheng had long fled, even emptying the wealth accumulated by Xiao Changsheng over the years.

Included in that wealth was the Emperor’s private treasury, which enraged him.

Ah Chen and Ye Ji took over Xiao Changsheng’s business across countries, whether openly or covertly.

Regarding the intelligence in Xiao Changsheng’s hands, it naturally was not overlooked, and they also quietly disclosed some spies of the Ximo Dynasty planted in other countries.

With their turmoil, Beixia could slowly recover its vitality.

When smiles appeared on the faces of Beixia’s people, Ye Ji ordered the arrest of traitors colluding with Xiao Changsheng.

The Emperor of Ximo was furious, but now faced with stealthy provocations from various countries, he was too preoccupied to act.

He also received a document from Beixia, asking him to fetch his nephew, Xiao Changsheng.

They said fetch, but it meant bringing things to exchange.

When Xiao Changsheng was released from the dungeon, he was unaware that the outside world had changed. When he was fetched, and communicated with his contacts, he was so enraged that he spat blood and fainted on the spot.

This collapse meant he completely lost his vigor.

With Beixia stabilizing again, Ye Ji began bestowing honors.

This time, he was to reward a large cohort of people, and the list of names alone was thick. Fortunately, not everyone could appear before the emperor, otherwise, this task would take an entire day.

Firstly, Ah Chen, who once offered high-yield crops, increased Beixia’s grain production, foresaw the year of disasters from astronomical observations, donated money and grain during the disaster year, and organized manpower for disaster relief. Without hesitation, the title of Commandery Prince Ning Cang was elevated to Prince Ning Cang.

In the court, he deliberately explained the characters ”Ning” and ”Cang”.

”Ning, meaning peace. Cang, meaning granary.”

No minister opposed, for they understood how critical Ah Chen’s contributions were, and had known the real meaning of those characters from the start. Simply because Ning Zhen’s surname is Ning, many outside didn’t think much of it.

Now, those who didn’t understand suddenly realized, previously thinking the pronunciation of ”Ning” was due to an accent. In reality, when Prince Ning Cang was conferred as Commandery Prince, they knew ”cang” meant granary, but didn’t realize ”Ning” wasn’t the Ning of the Ning Family but rather peace, related to Beixia’s peace.

The significance of these characters couldn’t be heavier, yet none felt Ning Zhen couldn’t bear it.

Ah Chen’s contributing sisters each received titles, earned through their achievements.

Contributing ministers, large families independently saving disasters, businesses, and even common people... anyone with merit and contribution was rewarded.

This time, the He Family was included, for they contributed substantial grain and clothing.

And those who sacrificed their lives for disaster relief... were recorded and eternally remembered.

”Why are you eating so little again?” Ye Ji was not satisfied.

Ah Chen said, ”Later I need to return to the Mansion to gather with my sisters, saving some room.”

Ye Ji doubted she could eat much.

Once back, she would surely tell her sisters that she ate quite a lot in the palace.

Luckily, her health had never been a problem.

Ah Chen had just arrived at the Mansion when she was intercepted by Mrs. Liu.

Mrs. Liu was the biological mother of seventh sister Ning Yuwan. Ning Guangjun never favored concubines who failed to bear sons, nor did he summon those who bore daughters.

He deemed them unlucky.

Their treatment was naturally poor.

As for the Commissioner’s mother, Mrs. Wen, she passed away in melancholy when the Commissioner was very young.

Mrs. Wen was rescued unexpectedly by Ning Guangjun, an experience that easily formed profound emotions. The subsequent events were too devastating for her, with her already weak body failing to overcome the hurdle.

At that time, she hastily assured Ning Guangjun after giving birth to the Commissioner, that she would definitely bear him a son.

Ning Guangjun was cruel and indifferent; whenever the first-born was a daughter, he’d consider it unlucky and wouldn’t summon them.

Bereaved by the indifferent treatment from her beloved person and having just given birth, she couldn’t withstand such blows, enduring only three or four years before passing. Additionally, she was notably cold toward the Commissioner, likely blaming her for not being a son.

She was pitiable.

But the Commissioner was innocent too, feeling no affection for her mother due to these experiences.

The Commissioner sympathized with her sisters because their situations were similar, sharing the same feelings. Furthermore, she had quite good rapport with her sisters.

This was partly because she realized her situation early and connected closely with her sisters from a young age.

Initially, the sisters might have felt alienated due to her gender disguise, given Ning Zhen, a hoped-for son by Ning Guangjun. But interacting, they perceived genuine compassion from this ”brother”, reciprocating with sincerity.

Ah Chen, upon arriving, took control of Prince Ning Mansion, making days better for the wives there. Their daughters were filial, and life couldn’t have been better.

They weren’t confined to the residence; they could go out and wander daily.

They were sensible persons, never causing trouble. Ah Chen was very lenient with obedient people, even rewarding them handsomely, sufficient for a lifetime of comfort.

Perhaps due to Ning Guangjun’s heartless conduct, they would frequently visit him.

They claimed it was visiting with concern, but essentially they were flaunting a bit to vent.

”Mrs. Liu, what’s the matter?” Ah Chen’s recall was momentary, she saw Mrs. Liu seemed anxious.

Mrs. Liu whispered, ”Today when visiting Old Prince, I inadvertently noticed he seemed somewhat lucid.”

Ah Chen understood: ”I’ll check shortly after I’ve gathered with my sisters.”

Mrs. Liu felt more at ease and heard Ah Chen say, ”Rest assured, he won’t escape.”

Mrs. Liu smiled sheepishly, she was just a bit worried, having scolded Old Prince several times.

She merely cursed verbally, daring not do anything else, terribly timid.

She was simply upset. When the child was born, Ning Guangjun inquired if it was a boy or girl, learning it was a daughter, cursed her as obnoxious, failing to produce offspring with gender.

The words, she would never forget in her lifetime.

Recalling them, her eyes still felt warm.

After all, life improved, her daughter escaped the bitter sea, and through her abilities earned a title.

She was content for life.

Occasionally cursing that obnoxious Ning Guangjun, life couldn’t be more comfortable.
