Chapter 1395: Chapter 373: Soldiers’ ”Struggle” (Part 2)

”We’ve lost too many opportunities because of the Labor Party, East Africa, the Jews... If it weren’t for them, the Empire would have ended the war long ago.”

The German soldier even hated East Africa, for in his view, East Africa was also a ”traitor.” After all, East Africa, as a German Country, stood by during the war, which was a betrayal to the German nation.

”Adolf, you should calm down. Although I know your injury to the eyes has affected your mood, can it be worse than mine? I lost a leg for this war and will probably bear this cost for the rest of my life. Meanwhile, your eyes, according to the doctor, still have a chance of recovery,” said the amputated soldier to the Corporal named Adolf.

Hearing this, Adolf calmed down and said to the soldier, ”Valenfeils, I’m sorry, I indeed got very emotional. I hope you can forgive a patriotic man. If it were not for the deep love for Germany, how could I be so agitated?”

”As for your leg... it was sacrificed for the cause of the Empire, so don’t be sad.”

Valenfeils’ mouth twitched slightly; such consolation was better left unsaid. However, Adolf couldn’t see the change in his facial expression because his colleague’s eyes were damaged by the gas.

”Thank you for your comfort, Mr. Adolf. Actually, after these few months, I’ve already calmed down inside. As you said, my thigh was sacrificed for the Empire’s cause.”

”However, compared to those comrades who lost their lives on the battlefield, aren’t we considered lucky? At least we both survived.”

”Looking back now, this war was indeed a disaster for us. Countless people lost their lives because of this war. If a ceasefire could be achieved, perhaps that would be the best outcome.”

Adolf still held a good impression of Valenfeils, saying, ”Your optimism is a good thing, yet I cannot forgive those corrupt bureaucrats, and profiteering Jews... because of these parasites, more unnecessary sacrifices were caused.”

Hearing Adolf’s words, Valenfeils also gritted his teeth and said, ”Indeed, some people shouldn’t have lost their lives, but due to the smuggling of war supplies or incorrect intelligence, they fell on the battlefield. My leg had to be amputated due to fungal infection resulting from the lack of frontline medication.”

”However, the Empire has also recognized this problem and should settle accounts with those unprincipled merchants in the rear areas.”

Adolf said vehemently, ”It’s not just settling accounts; this vile group should all be sent to concentration camps and shot. Without their actions, the war should have ended two years ago.”

”Once my eyes recover, I’ve decided...”

”Decided what?” Valenfeils asked.

Adolf said, ”I want to go into politics, get inside the government, become a future high-ranking official of the Empire. I want revenge; I want to obliterate those detestable ones for the soldiers who sacrificed at the frontline and contributed to the German cause.”

Valenfeils considered Adolf’s words as delusions. After all, how could a Corporal become a high-ranking official of the Empire in the future? But he did not dampen spirits; instead, he encouraged, ”Then I wish you success in the future!”

”As for me, I don’t have such ambitious aspirations. If things go as expected, I will probably return to Szczechin and inherit my father’s leather shop.”

Adolf said, ”Thank you for your understanding, but each person has their own ambitions. I believe that as long as I hold onto patriotic passion, I will shine one day.”

”Once my eyes recover, I might go to Munich. My former unit was the Bavarian Infantry, and I think I should be able to make a career in Munich.”

Munich is about to welcome a young man, yet it has no idea what this young man will bring to Germany’s future.

Adolf lay on the hospital bed, sharing various immature ideas and political ambitions with Valenfeils. He is a person with a strong urge to express himself.

”Nowadays, it seems that the Empire is likely to end this war, and the news revealed in the papers all indicates a shift in direction. I just don’t know what behind-the-scenes deals the Allies and the Empire have reached...”

”East Africa cannot be trusted. Although they carry the banner of a German Country, they are infected with the bloodline of African natives. When I take office, I will definitely expel this fake German Country from its German status.”

”Americans and the British are birds of a feather. If it weren’t for them meddling, we would have taken Paris and besieged London by now.”

”The Labor Party and the Jews...”

While, Valenfeils patiently listened to this comrade, who was two years younger than himself, comment from time to time.

...

Not only young hotheads like Adolf were dissatisfied with Europe’s shift in public opinion, but also included those Americans mentioned by Adolf who were one with the British.

President Wilson of the United States angrily said to his subordinates, ”Why didn’t we receive any news? If Europe ceases fire, then what are we doing now?”

The country least wanting to see a ceasefire in Europe would be the United States. After all, since the start of World War I, the development of American society witnessed a new boom, although due to East African competition, the US earned much less early on. However, later on, the US had already surpassed East Africa in trade with Europe.
