The Sea Queen of 1985

Chapter 104: Chapter 104: Infuriating Twisted Logic

The two regions launched a joint investigation into the identity theft.

It was confirmed that Han Yuwei had impersonated Han Xiaoqing!

As Han Xiaoqing’s legal counsel, Chen Nanyang was handling the entire lawsuit.

Han Yuwei, the impersonator, was detained and brought back for a consolidated trial.

Han Wenchang and the man surnamed Xu were both dismissed from their posts. Director Li of Yangkai High School was also implicated, fired, and detained.

Stealing someone’s identity to attend university is punishable by up to three years in prison, criminal detention, or public surveillance, in addition to a fine.

Those who committed these acts—Han Wenchang, the man surnamed Xu, and Director Li—would all be sentenced.

Ye Feng gave Wu Cheng a few suggestions. After Wu Cheng put them to use, he successfully interrogated the three thugs and found they had been acting under orders.

They showed the thugs photos of Director Li and Han Wenchang for identification.

The three thugs recognized Director Li at a glance. Even though he was wearing a mask, his general appearance was unmistakable.

Director Li and the man surnamed Xu turned on each other, adding another charge to their cases. In the subsequent trial, they would be sentenced for both crimes concurrently, meaning they would spend several more years in prison.

Han Dayong and Wang Cuilan were also taken into custody.

Han Xiaoyuan was pacing anxiously. He found Han Xiaorui and Han Xiaoqing at the city guest house. ”Big Sis, Second Sis, you have to tell the police to let Mom and Dad go.”

”Let them go?” Han Xiaorui scoffed. ”Why should they be let go? They broke the law, so they must face the consequences.”

Han Xiaoyuan was dumbfounded. He had never seen such a terrifying look in his older sister’s eyes. ”But that’s our mom and dad.”

Han Xiaoqing pushed Han Xiaoyuan away. ”They’re *your* mom and dad, not ours.”

”How are they not your mom and dad? Without them, you wouldn’t even exist! You can’t forget where you came from!” Han Xiaoyuan had his whole spiel ready, expecting his sisters to obey him just like they used to.

Han Xiaorui slapped him right across the face. ”Forget where we came from? You have the nerve to say that to me? Your second sister and I raised you, carried you on our backs, and gave you every good thing we had to eat. You knew perfectly well that our parents sold Xiao Jing’s acceptance letter, but you didn’t say a single word. And you don’t call *that* forgetting where you came from?”

”And you still expect your sisters to be good to you? You’re a heartless, ungrateful bastard, worse than an animal. A dog would be more grateful than you.”

Han Xiaoyuan had been spoiled by his parents his whole life. They had never laid a hand on him, let alone his sisters.

”You hit me?” Han Xiaoyuan asked in disbelief, clutching his face.

Han Xiaorui slapped his other cheek. ”That’s right, I hit you, you inhuman piece of trash. Your second sister studied so hard. Just because you couldn’t make it, did you want to stop her from getting an education too?”

Han Xiaoyuan winced in pain. ”How is that my fault? The reason Second Sis couldn’t go to university is because of you!”

Hearing this, Han Xiaorui’s eyes filled with confusion. ”How can you blame me? It wasn’t me who told you to sell Xiao Jing’s acceptance letter!”

”How can I not blame you?” Han Xiaoyuan retorted brazenly, craning his neck. ”You worked so hard to get into university, but you dropped out in less than a year to get married and have a baby. What was the point?”

”If going to university is useless, why bother? Selling the spot earned us money. We used that money to build a house. What’s so bad about that!”

Han Xiaorui was stunned. ’So that’s the root of it. Their twisted logic is unbelievable.’ ”You... In any case, that’s no excuse for selling the acceptance letter. Besides, even though I didn’t finish university, did I ever stop sending money home?”

”Your betrothal gifts, the clothes for our parents—didn’t I send the money for all of that? I thought they just favored sons over daughters, and given how poor we were, I could overlook it. But you never, ever should have sold Xiao Jing’s acceptance letter.”

”Anyway, we’ve already given our lawyer full authority. Whatever the court decides is an official matter. From now on, Xiao Jing and I won’t be giving you another cent.”

”Get out!”

With that, Han Xiaorui kicked Han Xiaoyuan out the door.

Han Xiaoyuan stumbled backward from the kick. He wanted to hit his sister, but he noticed a tall man not far away staring at him.

If he made a move, Han Xiaoyuan had no doubt the man would beat him up.

Discretion is the better part of valor. Han Xiaoyuan dejectedly left the guest house and went to the detention center to see his parents.

Han Dayong cursed his two daughters for being heartless. Wang Cuilan cursed them as ungrateful wretches who would die horrible deaths for reporting their own parents.

But they showed no guilt toward their daughters, nor any apology for Han Xiaoqing.

Chen Nanyang was busy all day. When he returned, he asked over dinner, ”Are you sure you don’t want to issue a letter of forgiveness for your parents?”

Han Xiaorui looked at her sister. ”Xiao Jing, what do you think?”

If it were up to her, Han Xiaorui definitely wouldn’t give one.

Han Xiaoqing thought for a moment, then nodded. ”No. Let them be sentenced however they deserve. If my life is ruined, I don’t want anyone else to have it easy, especially the parents who sold my acceptance letter.”

Ye Feng said in a low voice, ”Does Xiao Jing plan to work in the public sector in the future?”

Han Xiaorui was taken aback. ”Do those jobs require a background check? If a close relative has a criminal record, you can’t pass the review?”

Ye Feng nodded. His profession required him to consider everything with extreme rationality. ”Public sector jobs, including tenured positions at hospitals and schools, all require immediate family members to have no criminal record.”

Hearing this, Han Xiaorui grew cautious.

She didn’t care if Han Dayong and Wang Cuilan went to prison, but she cared deeply about Han Xiaoqing’s future.

Han Xiaoqing paused. ”But can I even go to university anymore? If I can’t, then a background check is a moot point!”

At this, Chen Nanyang slapped his forehead. ”Look at me, I got so busy I forgot the most important thing! The Shencheng Education Bureau and East China Normal University have already decided to re-admit you.”

”This September, you’ll join the new first-year students. You’ll just be a year later than originally planned, but everything else will be the same.”

Han Xiaoqing’s face lit up with joyful surprise. ”Can I really go to university?”

Chen Nanyang nodded. ”Yes, you really can!”

Hearing this, Han Xiaoqing let out a long sigh of relief. ”If that’s the case, then I’ll let it go. From now on, I’m living for myself. No more blind filial piety. I’m never coming back to this place.”

”Sister, I might have disappointed you. I’m choosing to let them go for the sake of my future.”

Han Xiaorui waved her hand. ”Don’t say that. You’re what’s important to me. They don’t matter!”

”I’m not going to acknowledge them as my parents anymore anyway, and I certainly won’t give them another cent! By letting them go this one time, all debts—be they of kindness, resentment, or hatred—are wiped clean!”

Chen Nanyang took out a stack of documents. ”Since you’ll be heading back, you’ll need to sign and stamp these authorization forms. I’ll handle the aftermath here.”

Han Xiaorui looked over all the documents before letting her sister sign. ”We’re counting on you, Lawyer Chen.”

”If we hadn’t run into Teacher Zhou this time, my sister and I would never have discovered the impersonation.”

”Our schools were always proud of us, and we received a lot of help from our teachers and principals when we were students.”

”Therefore, I’ve decided to donate money to the schools my sister and I attended: Han Family Village Primary School, Ping Shui Middle School, and Yangkai High School.”
