Dungeon Master (Karma System)

No one stepped onto the offered bridge.

The elite team’s captain ordered the group away from the edge of the receiving platform. Dagar’s soldiers formed a barrier between Merrit’s technicians and the branch. The Orchard wardens did not interfere.

Veyrath crossed only after the formation settled.

He stopped inside the boundary and studied the words grown across the bark.

[SANCTUARY COMMAND MAY ENTER.]

”Who knew Sanctuary would enter first?” he asked.

Edrin answered through the expedition channel.

”Everyone involved in the agreement.”

”Did any resident know the order?”

”The receiving wardens knew. No one in the western district should have known when the gate opened.”

The branch did not move while they spoke. Its leaves remained open beneath daylight filtering through the canopy.

Merrit’s senior technician approached the painted boundary without crossing it. His detection frame resembled an empty metal window supported by three folding legs. He aimed the frame toward the bridge and adjusted two sliding plates.

Thin lines of color formed across the opening.

”The branch is alive.” he said. ”The magic shaping it belongs to the Last Orchard.”

”Edrin already knows he owns the tree.” Dagar’s officer replied.

”Ownership is not the measurement. I detect no foreign magic in the bridge.”

Veyrath asked whether the instrument could miss a dormant influence.

”The clasp markings prove the device can hide while inactive. The bridge is active. If the foreign object directly shaped it, some residue should remain.”

”Unless the object convinced Edrin’s terrain to shape itself.” Quin said from Sanctuary.

The technician looked toward the communication token carried by the captain.

”A command copied well enough might leave only the dungeon’s own power.”

Edrin ordered the bridge to rise.

The branch trembled. Its end lifted several inches and stopped. The words remained.

Edrin repeated the command. Leaves folded along the branch, but the bridge did not withdraw.

”Can you kill it?” Dagar’s officer asked.

”Yes.” Edrin replied.

”Then remove the route.”

”The branch connects to an inhabited tree. Killing it may damage homes two levels above.”

The reason ended the suggestion. Veyrath did not ask Edrin to injure his own residents because a suspicious road had appeared.

Instead, the expedition used the northern route Edrin had prepared. Orchard wardens led them beneath a vaulted opening in a nearby trunk. The passage curved downward through pale wood shot with green veins. Openings along one side overlooked terraces where residents harvested fruit, repaired woven bridges, and guided streams into holding pools.

The Last Orchard did not resemble a fortress. Its defenses were built into ordinary movement. Branches could lift homes beyond the reach of attackers. Root passages could close behind an evacuation. Bridges could separate without leaving ruins that needed rebuilding.

The same flexibility now worked against it.

Residents watched the foreign group pass. Edrin had warned the receiving settlement without explaining every detail. Some appeared relieved. Others saw Redoubt armor and Merrit’s instruments and moved children farther from the road.

The residents belonged to several peoples Max did not recognize from Sanctuary. Some had bark-colored skin and hair that moved like narrow leaves. Others looked human until they placed bare hands against a railing and felt the road’s movement before it became visible. Ordinary humans worked among them without distinction in clothing or authority.

No one treated the Orchard as scenery. Residents trimmed walkways, collected fallen leaves for compost, and inspected the flexible joints where homes met trunks. Young trees received support frames made from dead wood so their living branches did not carry weight before they matured.

The settlement explained Edrin’s resistance to treating every infected branch as expendable. His terrain was also housing, roads, food, and work. Destroying a path could damage several parts of daily life even when no enemy stood on it.

One resident approached Halden during the passage.

”Will the western roads open today?” the man asked.

”No.” Halden replied. ”Use the northern market route until the wardens remove the restrictions.”

”The northern route adds half a day to the mill.”

”The delay is safer than entering a road issuing false instructions.”

The resident looked toward the foreign soldiers. ”Did they come to take control?”

”They came because we requested skills we do not have.”

Halden offered no promise about when the problem would end. The man accepted the inconvenience more readily than he would have accepted reassurance contradicted by the closed roads.

”They think we came because Edrin has lost control.” Dagar’s officer said.

Halden walked beside him. ”Part of the Orchard is no longer obeying him. Their conclusion is not entirely wrong.”

”You speak openly about your Dungeon Master’s weakness.”

”I speak accurately about the danger residents can see.”

The officer considered the answer and stopped treating Halden as someone protecting Edrin’s pride.

The road narrowed as it entered older growth. Houses became less common. The trees stood farther apart, but every trunk was wider. Moss-covered platforms had grown into the bends of branches. Ropes marked safe crossings where the living wood shifted beneath travelers.

Edrin issued each movement command through Halden so the foreigners could hear the exact words before the terrain responded.

”Lower the east branch to the marked stone.” Halden said.

A branch descended until its end rested beside a gray stone cut with three rings.

”Open the lower passage between the split-root tree and the western pool.”

Roots separated and revealed a tunnel.

The orders functioned normally for the first hour.

Merrit’s technicians tested every altered surface. They found traces of Edrin’s power, ordinary growth, and residue from repairs made after the challenge. Nothing matched the markings on the broken clasp.

The scout located the first contradiction near an abandoned watch platform.

Halden ordered a branch to connect with the platform. A branch descended from the correct tree and stopped several feet short.

A second branch extended from behind the group.

It connected perfectly.

The elite scout crossed only far enough to inspect the connection. The old branch had grown around the platform’s former mounting point, crushing newer railings and leaving no space for the locking hooks used by the current road.

”The command produced the remembered destination without accounting for later construction.” he said.

Halden ordered the branch to withdraw using its original name. It responded immediately.

He repeated the order with the new road designation. The branch stopped halfway, twisted, and lowered again.

”Do not repeat old wording merely because it works.” Veyrath said.

”The old command gives me control.” Halden replied.

”It also confirms which records remain useful to the influence.”

Halden considered the point, then created an entirely new description based on the branch’s position and a red support frame installed after the challenge. The branch withdrew without hesitation.

The exchange established their first working protection. New language did not guarantee safety, but old language gave the enemy a pattern it already understood.

The expedition used the protection cautiously rather than mistaking one successful command for proof of safety.

Halden marked every newly phrased command on his map. The record allowed other wardens to repeat the intended result without repeating the same words. It also gave Quin a way to determine whether the influence later learned from observation or merely copied language it overheard.

”Was the second branch ever used for the same command?” Quin asked.

Halden examined the bark. ”Before the challenge. The original road was replaced when the platform expanded.”

”How often did you issue the old instruction?”

”Hundreds of times.”

The false response had not invented a solution. It had retrieved an older one.

Max reviewed the earlier reports from the core room. The two villages that received false evacuation orders had both moved during the First Challenge. Their current shelters differed from the shelters used at the time.

”Ask Edrin whether the false orders sent them toward their old evacuation sites.” Max said.

They had.

The influence knew the Orchard as it existed during the challenge. It did not understand every change made afterward.

Veyrath ordered the discovery kept within the expedition. The knowledge gave them a way to recognize copied commands, but revealing it carelessly might teach the enemy what it had misunderstood.

They continued toward the last known location of the missing wardens.

The ground beneath the trees gradually disappeared. Roots interlocked over a ravine filled with water and dense leaves. The path crossed broad wooden plates that flexed under each step. Foreign soldiers adjusted poorly at first. Orchard wardens shifted their weight before each movement and barely disturbed the surface.

Max listened as Veyrath shortened the formation. The elite scout remained near the front without moving beyond the wardens. Merrit’s technicians stayed between two defensive pairs. Dagar’s officer guarded the rear.

The expedition reached a fork not shown on the map.

One path descended toward the missing wardens’ route. The other climbed toward the abandoned battle site.

Words appeared along the descending root.

[WARDENS REQUIRE AID.]

No one followed the message.

Halden knelt beside the letters without touching them.

”The growth is fresh.” he said. ”Less than an hour.”

”The bridge at the gate knew Sanctuary had arrived.” Veyrath said. ”The influence is receiving current information from somewhere.”

The scout inspected the canopy. He found no observer.

Merrit’s technician positioned two detection frames so their fields crossed over the words. The first showed only Orchard magic. The second reacted when he narrowed the range to sustained command residue.

One colored line bent downward.

It did not lead along the root. It passed through it.

The defensive specialist cut a shallow opening after Halden approved. Beneath the bark ran a strand darker than the surrounding wood. It was not metal. It was a narrow cord of hardened plant tissue surrounding something pale and jointed.

Merrit’s technician held the detection frame over the opening. The colored lines did not identify a spell placed on the root. They showed a narrow absence where the Orchard’s ordinary magic should have flowed.

”The foreign material is not controlling the entire branch.” he said. ”It is interrupting the signal and replacing selected parts.”

Halden asked whether the strand could be removed without killing the root.

”Possibly, if it remains still.”

The jointed object did not remain still.

The jointed object moved.

The specialist withdrew his blade. The strand snapped deeper into the root before anyone could seize it.

The letters across the path split apart. The root twisted beneath the expedition, tipping everyone toward the ravine.

Veyrath called the withdrawal route.

The elite team moved without waiting for an explanation. Soldiers caught Merrit’s equipment rather than allowing the technicians to chase it. Orchard wardens grew handholds from the nearest stable branches. Dagar’s rear guard crossed last.

The root rolled completely after they reached the watch platform. Its underside opened along a seam lined with wooden teeth.
