Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The Iron Redoubt’s residents recognized Dagar before they recognized Max.

Workers moved aside when their Dungeon Master crossed the residential square. Some saluted. Others bowed their heads. No one approached him with a routine question.

Max initially interpreted the distance as fear.

The quartermaster corrected him.

”They do not interrupt Dagar because every public appearance is usually connected to defense.” she said. ”If he is walking the square, they assume someone requires his attention more than they do.”

”Does someone?” Max asked.

”Usually.”

Dagar heard the exchange.

”You believe I should walk without a purpose.”

”I believe people should see you when a wall is not failing.” the quartermaster replied.

”They know where to submit needs.”

”They submit supply needs. They do not submit what they assume you would refuse.”

Dagar stopped beside the central well.

”Give an example.”

The quartermaster pointed toward a row of workshops built against an interior wall. Their chimneys rose below the defensive walkway. Smoke stains marked the stone.

The smiths wanted to move three workshops into the second courtyard, where deliveries would not pass through the residential gate. They had never submitted the proposal because the second courtyard belonged to trade and defense.

”It does.” Dagar said.

”The workshops produce fittings for the walls.”

”And fires beneath defensive platforms.”

”Then provide a safe location instead of allowing everyone to assume the answer is no.”

Dagar looked toward Max.

”Sanctuary allows businesses to claim whatever ground they prefer?”

”No.” Max replied. ”They request locations through people authorized to evaluate them. I see the request only if it changes dungeon territory, threatens important systems, or cannot be resolved below me.”

”Another tier.”

”Several.”

Dagar disliked systems that separated him from the final decision. His fortress had survived because orders moved downward clearly. Max’s structure allowed information to move sideways before rising.

”A lower official can approve something you would reject.” Dagar said.

”Only within the authority I gave them.”

”And when they misunderstand the boundary?”

”The decision can be reviewed. Keeping everything with me would replace occasional error with constant delay.”

Dagar studied the busy square.

The Redoubt had fewer residents than Sanctuary, but nearly every civilian need eventually intersected with defense. A workshop used wall space. Housing consumed storage. Market hours affected gate schedules. Dagar retained decisions because no category felt separate from survival.

The result made every improvement wait for him.

”You are not required to copy Sanctuary.” Max said.

”You keep saying that.”

”Because you keep asking questions as if my answer becomes an order.”

Dagar’s expression hardened before he understood the point.

His first challenge had judged him alone. The new communication system placed him beside Dungeon Masters whose success created pressure to imitate them. He had invited Max to learn, not to surrender ownership of the Redoubt.

”I will decide what changes here.” Dagar said.

”Yes.”

Max’s immediate agreement removed the argument Dagar had prepared to fight.

They inspected the ventilation shafts.

The original shafts carried air through the third wall and beneath the defensive platforms. During the challenge, residents had widened interior grates and used maintenance passages as emergency routes. The passages opened outside the third wall but inside the second.

They could move small groups. They could not evacuate the entire residential district.

Dagar’s captain proposed widening two passages enough for armored soldiers. The quartermaster wanted four routes capable of moving families and carts.

Each opening weakened the wall.

Max’s elite captain examined the structure with Redoubt engineers. He did not recommend an answer immediately.

”What threat is the wall built to stop?” he asked.

Dagar named heavy infantry, siege creatures, and sustained magical attack.

”What threatens the evacuation routes?”

”The same forces.”

”Then four obvious exits give the enemy four objectives. Two narrow passages may be easier to protect but cannot move the population. Can the routes end somewhere other than open ground?”

The engineers considered tunnels leading into the second courtyard’s storage buildings. Families could emerge under cover rather than beneath the walls.

The quartermaster wanted separate routes in case one building burned. The captain wanted doors that could not be opened from the second courtyard.

Their argument became design work.

Max watched Dagar listen.

The fortress Dungeon Master did not fear disagreement. He feared decisions whose cost appeared only after stone had been cut. Once the engineers produced a plan showing wall strength, movement capacity, and closure mechanisms, he could judge it.

”Your problem is not that civilians decide too much.” Max said quietly.

”What is it?”

”You receive their needs as complaints instead of designs.”

Dagar looked toward the quartermaster and engineers.

”A need without a defensive answer cannot be approved.”

”Then give them access to people who can develop the answer before it reaches you.”

The suggestion preserved Dagar’s final authority while changing who prepared the choices.

He did not approve a new administrative structure on the spot. He ordered the quartermaster to form a design group containing one engineer, one guard, and two residents affected by each proposal. They would present completed alternatives rather than asking Dagar to invent one.

The quartermaster wanted more authority. The order still gave her something she had lacked: a path for civilian problems to become defensible plans.

”A trial.” Dagar said.

”Everything begins as one.” she replied.

The Redoubt’s economy occupied less space.

Most businesses served residents or soldiers. The trade courtyard opened to external caravans on fixed days. Travelers rarely remained longer than required to unload, purchase supplies, or hire guards for the road.

No attraction encouraged them to return.

Dagar knew the weakness. He resisted solving it through entertainment that did not strengthen the fortress.

”Visitors consume security.” he said. ”More guards at the trade hall. More inspections. More people who do not know alarms.”

”They also bring information, money, and skills.” Max replied.

”If they remain.”

The Redoubt’s challenge was not a lack of useful people. It gave them no reason to stay beyond a transaction.

Max described the Arena, Skyyard, Hall of Achievements, and lower levels without suggesting Dagar build copies. Each attraction connected to Sanctuary’s larger dungeon. A fortress needed something that emerged from its own identity.

The defensive captain offered the first possibility.

”Training.”

The Redoubt already maintained siege yards, formation grounds, wall drills, and engineers capable of teaching fortification. Armies and guilds might pay to use them.

Dagar objected that outsiders would learn Redoubt methods.

”They already study every wall they attack.” the captain said. ”We decide which methods are public and improve ours with what they bring.”

The argument surprised Max. The captain had resisted civilian influence throughout the visit. He supported outsiders when their presence strengthened soldiers.

His motivation was not isolation. It was readiness.

Dagar asked Max whether Sanctuary would send people to a fortress-training attraction.

”Some adventurers would come. Veyrath might send soldiers if the rules protect information neither side wants shared.”

”And you?”

”I would inspect it before recommending it.”

Dagar almost smiled.

The smith whose workshop had started the argument came out carrying a warped hinge plate. She stopped when she saw both Dungeon Masters and appeared ready to retreat.

The quartermaster called her forward.

”Explain the delivery problem.”

The smith looked at Dagar rather than Max.

”Ore carts enter through the residential gate because the trade courtyard closes during drills.” she said. ”Every closure leaves carts beside the homes. Children climb them. Draft animals foul the well route. We proposed a workshop move twice and withdrew both drafts before submission.”

”Why withdraw them?” Dagar asked.

”The second courtyard is defensive space.”

”Calling the courtyard defensive space is a description, not an answer.”

The smith tightened her grip on the hinge.

”Because asking you to surrender defensive space for our convenience sounded disloyal.”

Dagar’s expression changed. He had built the third wall so residents would survive an assault. The same people had learned to describe ordinary safety as convenience whenever it competed with military readiness.

”How much space?” he asked.

The smith described three workshops, one covered unloading lane, and gates that could lock the entire section away from the defensive route. Her plan was more careful than Dagar expected because she had spent months solving objections no one had formally raised.

”Submit it.” he said.

”Will you approve it?”

”I will review it with defense and the quartermaster. Submission is not a promise of approval.”

”I know.”

”Then why did you need one before asking?”

The smith had no answer she wanted to give in public.

Max did not intervene. Dagar needed to see the silence without Sanctuary turning it into a lesson delivered by a guest.

After she left, Dagar spoke quietly.

”They mistake refusal for disloyalty before I refuse.”

”They know what you value.” Max said.

”I value their survival.”

”They hear you value the walls that provide it.”

Dagar looked toward the workshops. The difference was narrow enough to miss and large enough to shape an entire settlement.

The afternoon exercise alarm interrupted them.

Redoubt soldiers moved into assigned positions. Residents gathered near the marked ventilation routes. Colored smoke would represent contamination of the main residential gate. Controlled opponents would pressure the second courtyard without entering the civilian paths.

Max’s elite team formed around him.

Their captain gave one instruction.

”During movement, follow the called route. Questions after cover.”

Max acknowledged it.

Dagar took command of the Redoubt from the wall platform. His quartermaster joined the residential coordinators. His captain led the force protecting the evacuation buildings.

Everyone entered the exercise wanting proof of something different.

Dagar wanted proof the wall plan could adapt without losing discipline.

The quartermaster wanted proof residents could move without waiting for soldiers to make every choice.

The captain wanted proof that opening evacuation routes would not surrender the second courtyard.

Max wanted proof that he could follow his team’s judgment outside the territory where he controlled the rules.

Colored smoke began pouring through the residential gate.
