Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Max intended to watch the Grand Race from the public stands.

Anna arrived with him before the first airships moved to the starting line. The monthly event had outgrown the earliest races without requiring Max to rebuild the Skyyard. Merchants sold food beneath temporary awnings. Teams maintained their ships in assigned spaces. Spectators filled platforms constructed by ordinary workers around the original attraction.

The course remained the dungeon’s responsibility.

Its floating gates marked climbs, turns, and narrow sections where crews had to manage lift and speed. The current course ended with a descending curve around a stone pillar before a straight approach to the finish.

Twelve teams entered.

The Sixth Knot did not. The Five Knots were still repairing equipment used during the Underworld expedition and had declined the invitation without offering details.

Max and Anna found seats near the final turn. Several spectators offered to move, but Max refused to empty a section merely because he attended.

The people beside them needed several minutes to stop watching Max instead of the course. An older woman finally asked which team he supported.

”The one that flies best today.” Max said.

”A careful answer.” Anna said.

The woman supported the Copper Finch because her niece worked its rear rigging station. A pair of dwarves behind her favored the Gray Gull’s engine design and explained its advantages to anyone within hearing distance. By the time officials called the teams to the line, the section had divided its loyalties without asking Max again.

The race began without ceremony from him.

Early positions changed across the first climb. Two light airships gained distance before the course entered crosswinds. Heavier teams recovered during the narrow gates, where stable hulls mattered more than speed.

Max watched the crews rather than the standings. Pilots corrected their approach while riggers altered sail tension. Engine handlers conserved bursts for climbs. No single role could carry an airship through the entire course.

The dispute began at the final stone pillar.

The Copper Finch entered the descending curve in second place. The Gray Gull approached outside it with greater speed. Both airships could fit through the marked route, but only if one surrendered the best line toward the finish.

The Gray Gull moved inward.

The Copper Finch held position.

Their hulls never touched. The pressure from the larger Gray Gull’s sails disrupted the Finch’s lift and forced its pilot below the lowest course marker. The crew recovered before striking anything, but crossing the boundary disqualified them from placement.

The Gray Gull finished second.

The Copper Finch crossed fourth and immediately filed a protest.

Race officials reviewed the course record. One rule prohibited physical contact and deliberate damage. Another disqualified any ship leaving the marked route. No rule defined whether forcing another ship toward the boundary without contact counted as interference.

The officials could enforce written rules. Deciding what the rules should have covered belonged to the attraction’s authority.

A gnome reached Max before the spectators finished leaving.

”The race officials request a ruling.”

Max and Anna followed him to the review platform.

Both crews waited there. The Gray Gull’s pilot insisted that controlling the available line was part of racing. The Copper Finch’s pilot argued that the maneuver had made collision or disqualification the only choices.

Max watched the recorded approach from above, beside, and behind.

The Gray Gull moved inward gradually. The pilot did not turn sharply into the other ship or cross the Finch’s line after overlap. The Copper Finch had space to slow before the boundary became unavoidable, but doing so would have surrendered second place.

”Did you see the Gull moving inward?” Max asked the Finch’s pilot.

”Yes.”

”Could you have reduced speed?”

”I would have lost the position.”

”Losing the position is not the same as having no safe choice.”

The Gray Gull crew began to look relieved.

Max asked their pilot a different question.

”If the Finch had held its line and your sails touched, who would have caused the contact?”

The pilot studied the record.

”We would have.”

The maneuver had been aggressive and close to the limit. It had not violated the rules written for the current race.

The Copper Finch’s rigger asked to show the record from her station. The side view revealed how the Gray Gull’s sail filled the open space above her. She could no longer see the lowest marker during the final seconds and had called the descent based on the pilot’s warning.

”The blocked view made recovery harder.” she said.

Max agreed. The missing view did not create contact, and no existing rule guaranteed an unobstructed marker. It did show why judging only the pilots’ choices would be incomplete.

He asked the race officials how ground races handled an established line. Their rules assumed competitors occupied surfaces rather than volumes. The Skyyard had borrowed words from carts and horses without accounting for ships that could move above and below one another.

Anna placed three markers on the review table to represent the ships and the boundary.

”If the Finch climbed instead of descending, would it remain inside the course?” she asked.

An official adjusted the recording.

The upper boundary gave the Finch even less room. Climbing would have produced a disqualification sooner.

”Then slowing was the only legal escape after the Gull established its approach.” the Copper Finch’s pilot said.

”Yes.” Max replied. ”The rules allowed a competitor to force you to surrender speed. They did not promise that every position could be defended.”

The distinction mattered. Competitive pressure disappeared if every ship owned whatever space it wanted. Fair racing disappeared if a faster craft could trap another against a boundary after the two overlapped.

Max upheld the Gray Gull’s placement and the Copper Finch’s boundary disqualification.

He did not stop there.

Future races would define overlap at marked turns. A ship with established inside position could hold its line. An outside ship could move inward only while leaving enough room for both airships to remain inside the boundary. Pressure created by ordinary airflow remained part of racing, but a ship that removed every legal line after overlap would be responsible for forcing the other craft out.

The new rule would begin with the next race. Applying it retroactively would punish a crew for violating language that had not existed.

The officials tested the wording against three earlier incidents from other races. One had involved a ship diving before overlap and remained legal. Another had ended in contact and was already prohibited. The third would have violated the new rule because the outside vessel crossed inward after its bow passed the other pilot.

Reviewing old examples exposed a second problem. Crews could not judge overlap reliably when hulls differed in length.

The officials defined it by pilot stations instead. Colored bands would be painted near every station so competitors and observers could see when neither ship held an uncontested lead. The measure was imperfect, but it could be judged during a race without waiting for a recording.

The Copper Finch’s pilot disliked the result but accepted the distinction.

”Under the new rule, would the Gull have left enough room?”

Max replayed the final seconds.

”Barely. If the movement continued another moment, no.”

The answer denied both crews an uncomplicated victory in the argument.

Race officials added visible approach lines to the final turn for future events. They did not widen the course. The narrow space existed to test judgment under pressure.

Before the crews left, the officials invited both pilots onto the course in training craft. The ships were tethered and moved at a fraction of racing speed. Colored bands marked the new overlap point.

The Gray Gull’s pilot repeated the inward approach. When the colored bands aligned, an official raised a red flag. The pilot held his line, leaving the Copper Finch enough space to remain above the lower marker. The finish approach was worse for the Gull but still competitive.

They reset and tried again with the Finch half a length ahead. No flag appeared. The Gull crossed inward, claimed the better line, and forced the Finch to slow exactly as it had during the race.

”So the same maneuver remains legal if I begin it earlier.” the Gray Gull’s pilot said.

”Or if you earn a clear lead.” Max replied.

The Copper Finch’s crew accepted the demonstration more easily than the original ruling. The new rule protected established position, not a particular team.

Officials scheduled an open practice before the next Grand Race. Every crew would receive the revised language and a chance to test the markers. No one would need to discover the boundary while traveling at full speed.

The Hall of Achievements recorded the official placements. Community boards began debating whether the Gray Gull’s maneuver deserved a separate category for closest legal pass.

Max declined to decide that question.

He and Anna returned to the stands after most spectators had left. Below them, crews inspected their ships and discussed the new overlap rule.

”You came here to watch.” Anna said.

”I watched almost all of it.”

”You also rewrote part of the rulebook.”

”After the race.”

Anna looked toward the food stalls still serving late customers.

They bought a meal and sat where the final turn remained visible. The Gray Gull crew carried its second-place marker past the Copper Finch. The pilots stopped, compared the recorded approach again, and began arguing about which crew would hold the inside line next month.
