Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The message from the Last Orchard remained open above the core table.

Max read the final sentence again.

[I need to know whether your concord exists only when cooperation is convenient.]

Merrit responded first.

[The concord has existed for less than an hour. You are asking us to define an emergency obligation before we have completed our first scheduled review.]

Dagar’s answer appeared beneath it.

[The age of the agreement does not change the threat. Open a direct channel.]

Max looked across the table at Anna and Quin. The two gates used by the Iron Redoubt and the Thousand Works had already closed. Their Dungeon Masters were back inside their own territories, but the shared channel allowed the conversation to continue without reopening them.

”He knew enough about the concord to contact us immediately.” Anna said.

”The system may have displayed the new agreement to every survivor with public communication enabled.” Quin replied. ”The timing does not prove he was monitoring us before today.”

”It proves he was willing to become public when he needed help.”

Quin did not treat the observation as an accusation. ”Need changes what people are willing to reveal.”

Max approved the direct channel.

The core offered several communication forms. He selected voice without image. The Last Orchard had requested urgent assistance, not access to Sanctuary’s core room.

A man’s voice entered the chamber.

”Which of you speaks for the concord?”

”No one speaks for all three without agreement.” Max replied. ”I am Max Clarkson of Sanctuary. Dagar and Merrit are present through the shared channel.”

The answer produced a short silence.

”Then I am Edrin, Dungeon Master of the Last Orchard.”

His voice sounded controlled rather than calm. Max had heard the difference from people reporting attacks in Sanctuary. Calm allowed room for thought. Control held fear behind a decision because releasing it would not improve anything.

”Describe the threat.” Dagar said.

”My dungeon uses living terrain. The roads grow along branches and roots. Settlements move when I redirect the larger trees. For the past nine days, one region has resisted my commands.”

”Resistance is not an enemy.” Merrit said.

”Three wardens disappeared after following a road I ordered closed. Two villages received evacuation instructions I never issued. A root passage changed direction while people were inside it.”

Max asked whether anyone had died.

”Not yet. The missing wardens carried supplies for six days. Their route should have returned them after two.”

Edrin sent a map through the channel. The core stripped away whatever information he had not approved for release and displayed a simplified network of branches and roots. A dark region occupied the western side. Nine days of markings showed its edge moving inward.

The path did not form a straight line toward the core. It tested several routes, withdrew from two, and continued along a third.

Quin stepped closer.

”Does your terrain sometimes reject commands without outside interference?”

”Young growth can become difficult. Old sections can respond slowly. Neither condition creates instructions in my voice.”

”Can anyone else issue commands?” Max asked.

”My chief warden can direct ordinary roads during an emergency. He cannot move the oldest trees or alter core routes. I confirmed every order he issued.”

Dagar wanted the region isolated immediately.

”I tried.” Edrin said. ”The trees obeyed long enough to close the main routes. New ones opened before the barriers finished growing.”

Merrit asked for records from the First Challenge.

Edrin hesitated.

The omission mattered more than the delay.

”You connected the problem to the challenge before contacting us.” Max said.

”I connected the timing.”

”Nine days is not close to the challenge.” Merrit replied.

”The affected region contains one of the battle sites.”

Dagar’s voice hardened. ”What remained unaccounted for?”

Edrin did not answer immediately.

Max let the silence remain. The Last Orchard was not a subordinate territory. Edrin did not owe them every private record because he had requested a conversation. He did owe them enough truth to judge the risk he wanted them to accept.

”One attacker disappeared during the final day.” Edrin said. ”We found blood, damaged equipment, and part of his armor. We did not find a body.”

”A living invader should not have remained after the entrance closed.” Max said.

”I know.”

”Did you confirm his removal?” Quin asked.

”The challenge ended. The system declared my core secure.”

”Neither answer confirms what happened to him.”

Edrin’s next breath reached them through the channel.

”No. I did not confirm it.”

Dagar wanted to send soldiers. Merrit refused before he finished describing the offer.

”We do not know whether the threat can cross an exchange gate.” Merrit said. ”We do not know whether Edrin concealed an enemy, lost control of his own dungeon, or misidentified an ordinary failure. Opening a route before learning more would be reckless.”

”Waiting while the affected territory moves toward his core is also reckless.” Dagar replied.

”Your soldiers do not become expendable because another Dungeon Master delayed reporting a danger.”

”I did not ask for expendable soldiers.” Edrin said.

”You asked whether our agreement survives inconvenience. The question attempts to make caution sound like cowardice.”

The control in Edrin’s voice slipped.

”Three people are missing inside terrain I should command. If your concord exists only to exchange tools and training schedules, say so and allow me to seek help elsewhere.”

Max understood the anger. He also understood Merrit’s refusal to let urgency define an unlimited obligation.

”The concord requires us to answer requests from members.” Max said. ”You are not a member.”

Edrin went quiet.

”The same agreement allows us to provide case-specific assistance.” Max continued. ”We will decide based on the danger and what we can safely contribute. A decision to help will not grant us authority over the Last Orchard. It will not promise membership, permanent gates, or future military support.”

”You are negotiating terms while the threat advances.” Dagar said.

”I am preventing an emergency from creating promises no one agreed to keep.”

Quin supported Max without softening the demand placed on Edrin.

”We need the complete record of the missing attacker, every object recovered from the battle site, the orders your dungeon rejected, and the most recent location of the wardens.”

”Some of those records reveal protected routes.” Edrin said.

”Then begin with the portions that do not. If the evidence requires more, you can decide whether concealing the routes matters more than receiving informed help.”

Edrin agreed to send a restricted report.

Merrit offered detection equipment if the report suggested an artificial influence. Dagar placed a defensive squad on notice without ordering it toward an unopened gate. Max asked Veyrath to prepare Sanctuary’s elite team for a possible expedition.

Anna waited until those decisions had been entered into the record.

”Are you planning to go?” she asked Max.

Merrit and Dagar remained connected. Neither interrupted.

Max looked at the map again. The dark region had no meaning to his dungeon senses. Inside the Last Orchard, every route, command, and warning would belong to Edrin.

Max also had no authority to restore anyone killed there. The elite team understood Sanctuary’s resurrection rules better than most residents, but habit could still create false confidence. Every exercise they completed occurred inside a dungeon where death normally led to a hospital bed. The Last Orchard offered no such promise.

Veyrath sent the volunteers a written acknowledgment. Each soldier had to state that death outside Sanctuary might be permanent, that Max could not guarantee retrieval of a body or soul, and that refusing the mission would not affect rank or future assignments.

Dagar objected to the final condition.

”Soldiers do not select every operation.” he said.

”Sanctuary’s elite team was formed to defend Sanctuary and Max.” Veyrath replied through the channel. ”Service in another dungeon was not part of the duty they accepted.”

”Then you possess specialists, not soldiers.”

”I possess soldiers whose oath has defined limits.”

Max left the answer with Veyrath. Defending his commander did not require pretending another dungeon belonged within the same promise.

The six acknowledgments returned. None of the volunteers used identical language. One cited the missing wardens. Another believed learning how foreign dungeon terrain could be corrupted would improve Sanctuary’s defenses. The combat healer stated that a reconnaissance group facing an unknown living threat needed someone capable of keeping ordinary injuries from becoming deaths.

Their reasons mattered because informed consent required more than a checked box.

Max approved the mission only after Veyrath confirmed every response had been given without an officer standing over the writer.

”No.” Max said.

Dagar made a dissatisfied sound.

”Sanctuary would lose more than three million DP if I died there.” Max continued. ”My presence would not grant authority over Edrin’s terrain. Veyrath and the elite team can provide combat experience without placing Sanctuary’s Dungeon Master inside a threat we do not understand.”

”You ask others to accept the risk.” Edrin said.

”I will ask for volunteers and tell them what we know. I will not use my authority to pretend my death and theirs carry the same cost to Sanctuary.”

The statement sounded cold even to Max. It remained true. Leadership did not require him to take every danger personally. Sometimes entering the danger would satisfy pride while making the people depending on him less secure.

Veyrath acknowledged the preparation order through Sanctuary’s internal system.

Edrin’s first report arrived a moment later.

The missing attacker had carried a long metal case into the western grove. Witnesses saw him open it near the base of an ancient tree. Edrin’s defenders killed him several minutes later, but no one recovered the case.

Only a broken clasp had been found.

The fragment still rested in Edrin’s storage.

Quin asked for the inventory created after the battle. Edrin had cataloged weapons, armor, broken tools, and objects carried from the field. Most were destroyed after examination. Several pieces remained sealed because no one could identify their purpose.

”Were all of them recovered from the same attacker?” Max asked.

”No. The clasp is the only item tied to the missing case.”

”Move the unidentified objects away from living terrain.”

Edrin bristled at receiving an order inside his dungeon, then recognized the precaution. He transferred the sealed items to a stone-lined chamber and assigned wardens who would touch nothing until Merrit’s technicians arrived.

The report did not prove another object was involved. It proved Edrin’s earlier search had focused on immediate danger rather than equipment designed to wait.

Merrit read the description twice.

”Send an image of the clasp.”

Edrin complied.

Merrit did not identify the design. He did recognize the markings cut into its inner surface.

”The case did not contain ordinary equipment.” he said. ”The markings regulate delayed activation.”

Max studied the advancing region on the map.
