Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Max began the inspection expecting someone to ask him for approval.

No one did.

Hizon and Veyrath met him at the future Undercity road with completed estimates, marked construction boundaries, and a disagreement they had already resolved.

The road would curve twice between the arrival route and the joint-instance entrance. Hizon had placed shop fronts along the inside of each bend. Veyrath had reserved the outside walls for defensive positions and gates capable of dividing the passage into three sections.

”He wanted storage under the western platform.” Veyrath said.

”Empty space earns nothing.” Hizon replied.

”Stored oil beneath a defensive position earns a fire.”

Hizon pointed toward a separate structure marked farther from the gate.

”The oil goes there. The western platform holds stone, sand, and repair material.”

Veyrath had accepted the compromise because the new contents could support a defense instead of making one harder. Hizon had accepted it because unused protected space still offended him less than losing the entire road during an attack.

Max reviewed the cost.

Undercity businesses would fund the commercial fronts. Hizon’s reserve would cover the road and drainage. Max’s dungeon would supply only the defensive gates because they became part of the wider dungeon’s emergency system.

”You can afford your share without delaying maintenance?” Max asked.

Hizon opened the figures.

”The road delays one lodging expansion by three weeks. No repairs lose funding. Nethren’s share of joint-instance income remains separate.”

The core confirmed every amount. Hizon had no way to hide earnings, and Max had no reason to behave as if ordinary success were evidence of theft.

”Then build it.” Max said.

Hizon gave the order to the waiting supervisors. Workers moved toward the marked ground without requiring Max to choose their tools or assign their shifts.

Veyrath remained beside him.

”You expected a longer argument.” Max said.

”I expected Hizon to value the shortest route more than defensible ground.”

”And I expected Veyrath to demand walls thick enough to make the shops impossible.” Hizon said.

”Why did neither happen?”

Hizon looked toward the occupied market behind them.

”A road that brings customers into a district no one can protect is a poor investment.”

Veyrath answered differently.

”A defense that destroys the district to save it has protected stone.”

Their motivations had not become identical. Hizon still measured success through growth and stability. Veyrath still measured it through survival. The shared plan worked because each had accepted that the other’s concern represented a real cost.

Max continued to the work camp.

On the route out of the Undercity, he passed the first construction crew removing stone for the new road. Hizon had divided the work into sections so shops could remain open. Veyrath’s engineers marked load-bearing ground before merchants claimed new frontage.

A goblin shopkeeper complained that the first bend would hide his existing sign from arrivals.

Hizon did not move the road. He offered the shopkeeper space on a shared direction board at the bend, available under the same fee charged to every nearby business.

”He was here before the road.” Max said after they moved on.

”Which is why construction cannot close his entrance.” Hizon replied. ”It does not give him ownership of every future sightline.”

Hizon wanted businesses to survive the change without allowing the oldest merchants to control the growing district. Prosperity had created people with something to lose and enough influence to resist newcomers.

Max added equal sign access to the construction record. The dispute did not require his personal ruling, but it illustrated what growth would continue producing.

The Orc Chief waited outside an administrative building with Anna and three supervisors. One supervisor wore the insignia of a guard. One carried an employment ledger. The third had completed his assigned term two months earlier and now managed a paid work crew.

The separation Max ordered had become visible.

Assigned workers received sentence records stating the work required, the term remaining, and the restrictions that ended automatically at completion. Paid workers signed employment agreements covering wages, schedules, housing deductions, and the right to leave.

No supervisor could act as both guard and employer over the same person.

”The rule created a problem.” the Orc Chief said.

Max waited for him to explain.

Several experienced guards had also directed construction crews. Forcing them to choose roles left the camp short of one kind of leadership regardless of their decision.

”Which did they choose?” Anna asked.

”Most chose guard.”

The answer surprised Max until the Orc Chief explained. Orcs who had earned authority through security work considered abandoning it for a civilian title a loss of standing. Paid supervision offered better wages but less prestige.

The former assigned worker spoke next.

”Free workers do not want every order given like punishment. Guards know how to make people obey. They do not always know how to make people stay.”

The sentence could have created an argument. The guard supervisor considered it instead.

”People who can leave need reasons.” he said.

Hizon’s Undercity businesses had begun training prospective civilian supervisors. The first lessons covered wages, supply schedules, disputes, and the cost of replacing someone who left. Several guards disliked the idea that workers should be persuaded rather than commanded.

The Orc Chief had chosen two of the most skeptical guards for the first training group.

”Why them?” Max asked.

”If they learn, others will believe the lessons matter. If they refuse, they remain guards.”

The Chief did not want civilian practices imposed until orcs no longer recognized their own leadership. He also understood that punishment rules could not govern people who had finished their terms.

His solution protected both distinctions.

Max reviewed the new agreements. Anna had already removed a clause allowing housing to be revoked immediately after an employment dispute. Workers living in camp housing received a reasonable period to relocate unless they posed a safety risk.

”They should not become prisoners again because they lost a job.” Anna said.

The Orc Chief agreed. He cared less about the wording than the result. An orc who completed a sentence had paid the required cost. Extending control through housing would weaken the meaning of completion.

Max approved the agreements.

The Chief did not thank him for solving the camp. He thanked Anna for finding the housing problem and returned to assigning the training group.

Max preferred that outcome.

Masquerade Castle offered a less orderly inspection.

Kildra had changed the internal sequence for the first trial heist. The objective remained a silver mask stored somewhere inside the castle. The boundaries on violence and the ending conditions remained unchanged. Nearly everything else depended on which alliances participants accepted.

Kildra met Max in a gallery where four performers argued about who had permission to betray whom.

”They all have permission.” Kildra said. ”They disagree about timing.”

One performer wanted to betray a party early enough to alter its route. Another argued that an early betrayal made later negotiations meaningless. A third wanted his character to remain loyal unless participants insulted him. The fourth believed no one would trust her because she had betrayed every test group so far.

”Have you considered not betraying them?” Max asked.

”Repeatedly.” she replied. ”The possibility has become suspicious.”

Kildra did not seek randomness. He wanted choices to produce consequences without allowing participants to solve every future heist by memorizing one successful sequence.

The performers wanted memorable roles. The staff wanted enough structure to reset rooms. Participants wanted fair information. Those motivations pulled the castle in different directions.

Kildra resolved the argument by assigning each performer a condition rather than a required betrayal. An insult, a broken promise, or evidence of a competing alliance could change loyalty. If none occurred, the performer remained reliable.

”Then the participants cause the change.” Max said.

”Or prevent it.” Kildra replied. ”A betrayal should reveal something about their decisions, not merely announce that I became bored.”

The first trial had not begun, so Max offered no judgment on whether the conditions worked. He confirmed only that the three declared certainties remained clear.

Kildra wanted freedom to surprise people. Max wanted surprise separated from arbitrary punishment. Neither requirement eliminated the other.

The final stop was Nethren’s cavern.

The Crowncap Guard stood among a larger fungal network than Max had seen during the previous inspection. New cords crossed the walls and floor, but all three approaches remained open. Each offered a visible route from entrance to objective.

Nethren had completed the eternal-soul trials. The guardian now recognized surrender, organized withdrawal, and incapacitation under controlled conditions.

”Kildra’s performers begin tomorrow.” Nethren said.

He did not ask Max to shorten the testing sequence.

The Crowncap Guard represented more than a purchased creature to him. Fungal Hollow had been destroyed. Nethren needed proof that he could build something capable of surviving without repeating the rigidity that contributed to his earlier failure.

Hizon’s oversight frustrated him because it exposed flaws. It also gave him an authority who could approve the encounter without pretending affection for Nethren’s design.

”What result are you hoping for?” Max asked.

”A difficult victory.” Nethren replied.

”For the guardian or the testers?”

Nethren took longer to answer.

”For the cavern.”

He wanted the Crowncap Guard to pressure intruders, lesser fungal creatures to matter, and adventurers to recognize choices before failure. A guardian that killed every party taught him nothing. A guardian defeated without changing a party’s plan proved equally little.

”Then judge what the encounter makes them do.” Max said. ”Do not judge only who remains standing.”

Nethren recorded the standard.

When Max returned to Sanctuary, the reports waiting for him were shorter than expected. The leaders had not sent every dispute upward. They had sent completed decisions, unresolved boundary questions, and matters requiring dungeon authority.

Anna joined him in the core room.

”The meeting worked.” she said.

”One meeting did not create all of this.”

”No. It gave them permission to solve shared problems with each other before presenting them to you.”

Max looked through the results.

Hizon wanted prosperity. Veyrath wanted defensible ground. The Orc Chief wanted punishment to retain meaning without becoming permanent ownership. Kildra wanted creative control. Nethren wanted to rebuild something worthy of surviving.

None had surrendered those motivations.

They had begun accounting for the motivations around them.

The core produced a new notice before Max finished the last report.
