Dungeon Master (Karma System)

The core notice did not congratulate Max.

It listed permissions.

[SURVIVOR COMMUNICATION]

[Allows limited written contact between Dungeon Masters who retained control of their cores through the First Challenge.]

[TEMPORARY EXCHANGE ACCESS]

[Allows two consenting Dungeon Masters to establish a restricted connection between approved public territories.]

[Permanent access unavailable.]

[Core territories excluded.]

[Either Dungeon Master may sever the connection.]

The feature had appeared through the dungeon system. Kincaid had not delivered it, recommended it, or asked Max to use it.

Max preferred the distinction.

He called Anna and Quin into the core room before opening the communication list.

”Do we know what information the list shares about us?” Anna asked.

”Not yet.” Max replied.

Quin stood far enough from the interface to avoid activating anything accidentally.

”Then inspect visibility before messages.” he said.

The system allowed Max to choose a public identification. It required a dungeon name or recognized designation, a general theme, and confirmation that the dungeon remained active. Exact location, core strength, Dungeon Points, population, and level structure remained private unless Max disclosed them.

Someone contacting him would see:

[SANCTUARY]

[Training Dungeon and Open World]

[Active]

The description revealed little that ordinary visitors did not already know.

”No resurrection information.” Anna said.

”No Undercity, afterlife realms, subordinate dungeons, or defense records.” Quin added.

Max approved the public identification.

The list opened.

Many surviving Dungeon Masters had not enabled contact at all.

The system displayed no inactive names, casualty records, or count of how many had entered the First Challenge. Silence could mean distrust, isolation, damage, or a deliberate decision that other survivors offered more danger than value.

”We should not assume the visible list represents the strongest survivors.” Quin said.

”Or the most cooperative.” Anna replied. ”It represents the ones willing to be seen.”

Max considered what his own description communicated. Sanctuary’s title suggested safety. Training Dungeon and Open World revealed variety without describing its defenses. Another Dungeon Master might interpret the same words as strength, weakness, wealth, or an invitation to take advantage.

”Can we disable contact later?” he asked.

The system confirmed that public visibility and new messages could be suspended. Existing agreements would retain their own closure rules.

Quin added the option to their review. Max did not want continued visibility becoming an obligation merely because he enabled it once.

The system also allowed blocked contacts. A Dungeon Master who sent threats, repeated demands, or attempts to acquire restricted information could lose the ability to communicate with Sanctuary.

”Do not block ordinary questions because they are uncomfortable.” Anna said.

”Agreed.” Max replied. ”Demands are not automatically threats either.”

Quin created a standard requiring a documented reason for blocking a survivor. Max retained the authority to act immediately during danger, but the reason would still be recorded afterward.

The procedure seemed excessive before they had received a single private message. Quin reminded them that standards written after a dispute often resembled weapons designed for whoever caused it.

”Write the neutral rule while we do not know whom it will affect.” he said.

Max approved.

Dozens of entries did not appear. The system showed only a limited selection of Dungeon Masters who had enabled contact. Some used names. Others identified themselves through dungeon titles. Descriptions ranged from useful to deliberately empty.

Several entries had already sent general messages available to every survivor.

One offered creature exchanges. Another demanded information about divine patrons. A third asked whether anyone understood why the first challenge had occurred.

No answer from the system explained the Elder God’s purpose.

Max knew only what the first challenge had demonstrated. Dungeon Masters had been isolated from their patrons, attacked through temporary entrances, and judged on whether their cores remained secure. The new authority encouraged contact afterward.

”The sequence implies the system wanted independent survivors before permitting cooperation.” Quin said.

”It implies cooperation is permitted now.” Anna replied. ”Purpose requires more than sequence.”

Quin accepted the correction.

Max examined the temporary exchange rules.

Both Dungeon Masters selected a public territory under their control. The system created a temporary gate between them for an agreed duration. Each side could restrict categories of entrants and close the gate immediately.

The gate did not transfer authority.

A visitor crossing into Sanctuary became subject to Max’s dungeon rules. A creature owned by another core remained bound to its original Dungeon Master unless a separate transfer occurred. Neither side could use the connection to claim territory.

The rules said nothing about resurrection.

”A person dies after crossing.” Max said. ”Which dungeon receives them?”

Quin searched the available explanation.

”Host authority governs ordinary entry conditions. Resurrection authority is not defined.”

Anna looked toward the hospital records.

”We do not test the uncertainty by allowing someone to die.”

”Agreed.” Max said.

The omission did not make exchange impossible. It made unrestricted exchange irresponsible until they understood the boundary.

Max found another issue.

The gate could not open inside a core chamber, but the system’s definition of public territory depended on whatever the Dungeon Master designated. A dishonest Dungeon Master could call a dangerous approach public and allow visitors to arrive inside a trap.

Sanctuary’s prohibition against violence protected people only after they entered Max’s territory. It could not protect them on the other side.

”Every useful permission assumes both participants want the exchange to work.” Anna said.

”Consent is not evidence of competence.” Quin replied.

”Or honesty.” Max added.

They reviewed the general messages without answering.

The Grave of the Sun wanted combat data from the first challenge. The request included a proposed trade but did not explain what information its own Dungeon Master would provide.

The Wandering Menagerie offered rare creatures in exchange for access to stable terrain. Max rejected the idea before opening private contact. He had no reason to import creatures whose rules and ownership he did not understand.

The Iron Redoubt’s message was concise.

[Seeking comparison of defensive methods, evacuation structures, and sustainable post-challenge operations. No request for core access.]

The Thousand Works asked a different question.

[Seeking trade in crafted dungeon equipment, repair techniques, and nonexclusive attraction designs. Will exchange verified production information.]

”One knows what it lacks.” Anna said while reading the Redoubt’s message.

”Or knows what sounds reasonable.” Quin said.

”You dislike both of them already.” Max said.

”I have no basis to dislike either. I dislike treating a first message as a character assessment.”

Max understood. A carefully written request could reflect honesty, strategy, or someone skilled at appearing harmless.

He also understood that refusing every contact until trust already existed would make the new authority useless.

”What do you want from another dungeon?” Anna asked.

The question changed the discussion.

Max did not need another attraction merely because the system offered connections. Sanctuary attracted visitors, supported residents, and earned Dungeon Points. Hizon’s Undercity had become prosperous. Nethren’s territory was rebuilding. Corathen provided an entire living world.

The first challenge had exposed different needs.

Max’s dungeon depended on layers, distance, varied defenders, and people capable of acting without him. He had never compared those methods with another surviving Dungeon Master. Veyrath could learn from a fortress designed by someone who had faced a different invasion. Sanctuary’s craftspeople could benefit from techniques that did not exist locally.

Max wanted information that could not be gained by looking only inward.

Anna wanted something else.

”I want to know whether cooperation makes us safer before circumstances force us to attempt it.” she said.

The first challenge had isolated Max from Kincaid. A future threat might isolate Sanctuary from allies as well. Temporary contact offered a way to learn what cooperation required while either side could still close the gate.

Quin stated his motivation last.

”I want the system’s omissions identified before people build assumptions around them.”

He did not oppose contact. He wanted every uncertainty treated as a condition to investigate, not a detail to discover during failure.

Max sent two replies.

To the Iron Redoubt, he offered written discussion about defensive organization and civilian evacuation. He disclosed that Sanctuary maintained populated territories and required protection plans that accounted for residents.

To the Thousand Works, he offered discussion of repair businesses, attraction maintenance, and transparent production costs. He did not offer creature trades, resurrection access, or permanent gates.

Both messages requested the same information before any meeting:

- What public territory would receive visitors?

- Which local rules could harm or restrict them?

- How could either side close a temporary gate?

- What did the other Dungeon Master actually want from Sanctuary?

Max sent no message to Kincaid.

The new authority belonged to the dungeon system. Using it was Max’s decision.

The first response arrived from the Thousand Works before he left the core room.

[I want customers who survive long enough to return.]

The answer was blunt enough to interest Anna.

The Iron Redoubt replied several minutes later.

[I want to know how a populated dungeon remains useful without weakening itself.]

Quin read both twice.

”Neither answered only with what they want from us.” he said. ”They answered with the problem they are trying to solve.”

”Does that make them trustworthy?” Max asked.

”No.”

”Worth answering?”

Quin looked at the unanswered questions beneath each message.

”Yes.”

Max opened two private channels.
