Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Nethren allowed observers into the cavern before he allowed testers.

Max, Hizon, Dagar, and Merrit stood inside a protected gallery overlooking the three routes. Kildra watched from a separate position with two performers who had participated in earlier trials. Veyrath monitored the entrance and emergency controls.

The Crowncap Guard waited near the central fungal growth.

It had changed since Max’s first inspection. Dark plates covered more of its body. The pale caps forming its crown had spread into several layers. Amber light moved through the seams whenever the surrounding network reported motion.

The creature remained an eternal soul bound to Nethren’s territory. Destruction would not permanently kill it.

The testers possessed no equivalent protection beyond Sanctuary’s resurrection rules.

Nethren explained the encounter himself.

Three routes remained available. Parties could defeat the Crowncap Guard, destroy the fixed network anchors, or hold the central marker long enough to claim the sample objective. Surrender signals, withdrawal boundaries, and incapacitation conditions were demonstrated before entry.

”If the guardian fails to recognize a signal?” the Stone Brace captain asked.

”The network shuts down the encounter.” Nethren replied.

”You shut it down?”

”The control does not require me to notice first.”

Nethren had accepted Hizon’s insistence that safety could not depend entirely on the designer reacting quickly. Independent watchers monitored surrender marks and boundary exits.

Merrit’s workshop guards examined the visible fungal cords.

”Can we use tools not listed as weapons?” their leader asked.

”Declare them now.” Hizon said.

The team carried three mechanical wedges designed to create repeated vibration through stone or wood. In the Thousand Works, the tools revealed weak joints and disrupted moving mechanisms during hazard training.

Nethren had not tested the fungal network against them.

He wanted to forbid their use.

Max saw the reaction before Nethren spoke.

”Why?” Max asked.

”The trial is meant to test their decisions against the encounter, not imported equipment against unfinished growth.”

Merrit objected.

”Their decisions include choosing tools.”

”A party cannot purchase those tools in Sanctuary.”

”Then the cavern works only against people limited to the methods you expect.”

Nethren looked toward the Crowncap Guard.

The creature represented months of rebuilding and a future independent level. An unfamiliar tool could expose weakness before the first public encounter. Preventing the test would preserve confidence and make the eventual failure more expensive.

”They may use one wedge.” Nethren said. ”The other two remain with the observers.”

Merrit’s team accepted.

The Stone Brace entered first.

Their approach reflected lessons learned on Level Three. They did not treat holding one location as the only form of success. Two members pressured the middle route while the others tested the eastern ledge and western channel. When the Crowncap Guard committed toward the center, the smaller groups moved rather than defending ground they no longer needed.

The guardian responded through the network. It supported weaker fungal creatures, disrupted the western route with spores, and used its body to threaten the shortest path without sealing it.

The Stone Brace abandoned an anchor attempt after recognizing that the sample objective had become less defended. Their captain reached the center and began the required hold.

The Crowncap Guard turned toward him.

His party did not form a fixed wall. They attacked the network from two directions, forcing the guardian to choose between preserving its awareness and stopping the objective.

The captain held the marker for four counts.

On the fifth, the Crowncap Guard reached him and removed him from the position without inflicting a fatal injury.

The attempt continued until the Stone Brace lost two members to incapacitation and withdrew through separate routes.

They had not completed an objective.

Nethren looked disappointed.

”The guardian won.” Dagar said.

”The cavern revealed the winning choice and stopped them by one count.” Max replied. ”What did you want?”

Nethren wanted the first foreign test to prove the encounter difficult. It had. He also wanted visible progress toward completion because an impossible encounter was not a successful defense dungeon.

”They would complete it on another attempt.” the Stone Brace captain said after leaving the cavern. ”We know which movement forced the choice.”

Nethren accepted the assessment reluctantly.

The workshop guards entered after the cavern reset.

They approached like people accustomed to mechanisms. Instead of pressing all three routes, they observed how amber light moved through the guardian and struck visible cords only after confirming which growths responded.

The mechanical wedge entered the eastern ledge.

Its vibration traveled through the stone and into the fungal network. Several cords released from the wall. The Crowncap Guard received conflicting signals and turned toward the tool.

The guards moved the wedge.

The guardian followed.

The tactic transformed a piece of inspection equipment into a lure. Nethren’s creature understood threats, objectives, and moving intruders. It did not understand a tool that appeared to damage the network from a distance without behaving like a person.

The workshop team used the confusion to destroy one fixed anchor.

The Crowncap Guard responded by releasing spores through every connected cord near the eastern route.

Fungal growth swelled across the ledge and sealed it.

Hizon stopped the trial.

The network shut down. Spores settled. The Crowncap Guard returned to the center under Nethren’s direct command.

Merrit objected before the guards exited.

”They had two other routes.”

”The eastern route was valid when they entered.” Hizon replied. ”Nethren may make it dangerous. He may not remove it because their tool produced a response he did not plan.”

”The guardian reacted to damage.” Nethren said.

”Then the reaction is wrong.”

Nethren’s network could recover from damage by growing toward the disruption. The behavior made sense for survival. Inside an instance, it could invalidate the cavern by eliminating a route after the party committed to it.

”A dungeon must retain a fair route through the encounter.” Hizon said. ”If the boss can seal whichever route contains an unfamiliar threat, the party’s earlier choice becomes punishment for succeeding.”

Nethren wanted to distinguish the tool from ordinary tactics and ban it. Merrit wanted all three wedges permitted in the next test. Hizon wanted a hard limit preventing growth from closing any route.

Max listened before deciding.

”The public rules can restrict tools capable of damaging the environment from outside ordinary range.” he said. ”The guardian still needs a response that does not eliminate the route. Both problems exist.”

Merrit accepted a declaration rule because the wedge created effects beyond a normal adventuring tool. Nethren accepted a growth limit because public parties would eventually discover methods he had not anticipated.

The workshop guards repeated the test after Nethren withdrew the sealed growth.

They used the wedge under the new restriction. The vibration could disrupt nearby cords but not damage the network across an entire route. The Crowncap Guard treated the active tool as a threat while continuing to weigh the people carrying it.

The team destroyed two anchors.

One guard became incapacitated while holding the wedge. The tool continued vibrating after he fell. The guardian advanced toward him because the network still registered damage.

The independent safety control stopped the creature before it struck.

Another flaw had appeared.

”It sees the active tool, not the incapacitated person.” Nethren said.

”Then it needs to separate the two.” Max replied.

The guardian could disable or remove equipment without attacking someone the encounter had already classified as unable to fight. Nethren had taught it to respect incapacity and taught it to stop network damage. He had not resolved what happened when both conditions occupied the same place.

The trial ended without a completed run.

Nethren did not receive the public approval he wanted.

He also did not fail.

The foreign teams had exposed two specific behaviors before ordinary adventurers paid to enter: route-sealing growth and pursuit of active equipment beside an incapacitated person.

”How long?” Max asked.

Nethren estimated two weeks to alter the growth limits, retrain threat selection, and repeat controlled tests.

”Then we review again in two weeks.”

Nethren remained silent while the testers left the cavern. He had purchased the Crowncap Guard because the creature could become an obstacle worthy of an independent level. Every failed test delayed that goal and consumed resources he could not recover by pretending the failure was clever design.

Hizon waited until the observers were alone.

”Are you angry with the creature or yourself?” he asked.

”The creature followed the network I gave it.” Nethren replied.

”Then the answer is yourself.”

”I am deciding whether I built the wrong instinct into the level.”

Max understood the distinction. Adjusting a limit was simple. Deciding the guardian’s purpose was not.

”What do you want adventurers to overcome?” he asked.

”Pressure that grows while they hesitate.” Nethren said. ”They should choose a route before the cavern closes around them.”

”The test team chose.” Veyrath replied. ”The cavern invalidated the choice after they committed.”

Nethren looked down at the three routes. He wanted the guardian to punish indecision, not make every decision wrong.

”Then growth can narrow a route without sealing it.” he said. ”The party keeps its choice, but the cost of delay still rises.”

Hizon added the change to the revision list.

Nethren did not thank him. Their work had passed beyond the point where every useful disagreement required reassurance.

Merrit wanted access to samples from the severed fungal cords. Nethren refused without negotiation.

The material belonged to his rebuilding territory, and he had not invited foreign crafters to turn every discovered weakness into a product.

Merrit started to offer payment.

”No.” Nethren said.

Merrit recognized a boundary that price would only insult and stopped.

Dagar asked the Stone Brace whether the trial had value despite the failed objective.

”Yes.” their captain replied. ”The guardian changed what mattered faster than the dragon did. We changed with it sooner.”

Dagar valued the answer more than a completion marker.

Nethren watched the Crowncap Guard return to the central growth. The creature was powerful, protected, and not ready.

Earlier in his life, he might have treated the exposed flaws as reasons to restrict who could test his dungeon.

Now he began revising the network while the visitors were still present.

The Crowncap Guard turned toward him as he entered the cavern floor. Amber light moved through its crown, and the surrounding fungus opened a path.

Nethren stopped before the creature.

”You did what I made possible.” he said. ”I am going to make something better possible.”

The guard could not answer in words. Its plates settled as the network accepted new instructions.

Nethren had bought an eternal soul to become a boss, not a decoration that existed to confirm his first design. Letting foreign fighters expose its flaws did not diminish his control of the level.
