Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Max learned about the festival when Anna asked whether he intended to attend.

”Attend what?”

She showed him a handbill printed on ordinary paper.

[SANCTUARY MARKET FESTIVAL]

[Food, crafts, contests, music, and evening lanterns.]

[Portal plaza and eastern market streets.]

The handbill named a committee of merchants, residents, and caravan representatives. Max’s name appeared only in a line reminding visitors that Sanctuary’s normal safety rules remained active.

No request for Dungeon Points waited in the core system. No organizer had asked Max to produce booths, decorations, prizes, or food. The tiered response system had sent three matters upward: approval to redirect traffic around the portal plaza, permission to place temporary structures near a dungeon-maintained road, and confirmation that the evening lanterns would not interfere with portal markers.

All three had been resolved below Max’s level.

Quin had approved the traffic plan. A gnome construction officer had inspected the booths. The portal staff required different lantern colors near the arrival lanes.

The festival could happen whether Max attended or not.

”When did Sanctuary begin having festivals?” Max asked.

”Apparently on Saturday.” Anna replied.

They entered the plaza after midday without an escort. Max’s elite combat team remained available for real threats, but Sanctuary’s prohibition against violence made ceremonial guards unnecessary.

The eastern streets had changed.

Wooden frames supported cloth awnings over food stalls. Merchants moved their normal inventory outside. Residents sold carved toys, stitched level maps, model airships, and practical equipment made during the months since Level Five opened.

Nothing had appeared because Max selected it from a dungeon menu.

An orc cook sold meat beside an elven baker. Dwarves demonstrated small mechanical tools. Goblins from the Undercity operated a stall offering sealed meal packs and took orders for equipment repair below Sanctuary.

The Wayfarers’ Fellowship served inexpensive stew from a borrowed cart. Its lamp-and-hands sign looked like one minor organization among dozens. Max recognized the public services and saw no reason to examine it more closely during the festival.

Anna stopped at a table covered with cloth dolls representing dungeon creatures. The fey hounds had oversized ears. The dragon was small enough to fit in one hand.

”Veyrath would object to the proportions.” Anna said.

”Veyrath objects to most proportions that make him smaller.”

The merchant realized who stood at the table and tried to give them the dragon. Max paid the marked price instead.

The purchase created a new problem. Three nearby merchants began offering gifts as soon as they saw Max accept a festival item.

Max bought a paper packet of spiced nuts from one and declined the rest. Anna reminded the merchants that a paid sale did not guarantee endorsement by the dungeon. One seller immediately removed a half-written sign claiming the Dungeon Master’s preferred cloak clasp.

”You have never worn one of those.” Anna said as they left.

”The sign did not specify that I preferred wearing it.”

”You are helping him.”

The cloak seller wisely abandoned the claim.

Recognition followed them without stopping the festival. Some visitors stepped aside. Others greeted Anna or asked Max brief questions. The organizers did not pull him toward a stage or expect a speech.

A contest near the central fountain challenged teams to assemble a small bridge from prepared wooden pieces. No magic was required. The bridge had to hold a loaded handcart for one minute.

Max watched a family, two adventuring parties, and a group of apprentice builders compete. The adventurers treated the pieces like a dungeon puzzle and searched for hidden mechanisms. The builders measured the span and began working.

The family copied the builders and finished second.

The adventurers demanded no dungeon reward when they lost. Their entry fee became part of the prize paid by the organizers.

Music began in the next street. Instruments came from several countries represented among Sanctuary’s residents. Individual songs belonged to familiar traditions, but the musicians shifted between them without stopping long enough for the audience to separate by homeland.

One song stopped abruptly when two musicians disagreed about the rhythm used by the other’s homeland. The audience expected an argument. Instead, they played both versions and invited dancers to decide which one worked better.

The dancers failed to agree. Half preferred the quicker rhythm. The rest preferred the version that allowed longer paired steps. The musicians combined them into alternating passages and played the song again.

Max did not know whether the result preserved either tradition correctly. The people who owned those traditions were laughing while they tried to follow it.

Max and Anna ate at a shared table with people who had not expected the Dungeon Master to sit beside them. Conversation remained stiff until a child asked whether the small dragon doll could breathe fire.

”Not unless the merchant left out an important warning.” Max said.

The child’s father apologized. Max told him no apology was needed.

The evening contests used places rather than combat. A navigation challenge required participants to carry messages between marked stalls while temporary signs changed the available routes. A supply contest rewarded groups that packed a five-person expedition without exceeding a weight limit.

The Five Knots did not participate, but several airship crews approached the packing table with confidence and lost to caravan workers who handled cargo every day.

The festival revealed skills that dungeon achievements rarely recognized.

A judging table beside the packing contest offered Max a place of honor. He declined the chair but stayed to watch the final round. Contestants had to choose supplies for a winter journey after being told that one bridge might be unusable.

The caravan workers divided food and blankets between two carts. An adventuring party spent most of its weight on rope, climbing tools, and enchanted heat stones. A group of Sanctuary residents packed repair material for the bridge.

All three choices could succeed under different conditions.

The judges awarded the caravan workers first place because they could lose either cart and still keep everyone alive. They gave the residents a separate commendation for planning to improve the route instead of merely crossing it.

One adventurer asked Max whether enchanted equipment should have counted against the same weight limit as ordinary supplies.

”Ask the people running the contest.” Max said.

The adventurer blinked, then turned to the judges. They promised to clarify the rule next year.

Max enjoyed the exchange more than he expected. The organizers did not need him to validate every decision. Even a direct question could return to the people who owned the event.

Later, Anna joined a ring-toss game operated by children raising money for a neighborhood garden. The targets were carved mushrooms of different heights. Anna missed her first throw, adjusted, and landed the next three.

The children accused her of learning too quickly and awarded her the smallest prize. Max received a turn and missed twice.

”You are doing poorly on purpose.” Anna said.

”I am supporting the garden.”

His third ring landed around the largest target. The children gave him a packet of seeds and explicit instructions not to ask the dungeon core to grow them.

Max promised to use soil.

The exchange would never appear in an achievement record. No report would measure whether it strengthened Sanctuary. The packet still felt like evidence of a city whose residents expected to be present for another growing season.

Near sunset, Max found the organizing committee checking lanterns. They had purchased hundreds from local craftspeople. Each street used a different pattern. The portal plaza remained marked by steady blue lights that no decorative lantern could imitate.

The lead organizer noticed Max reviewing the layout.

”Is there a problem?”

”No. I wanted to know who made the traffic plan.”

She named a caravan master, two gnomes, and an innkeeper accustomed to managing Grand Race crowds. None were dungeon staff with authority over the core. They understood how people moved through the city and had used the response system to obtain the few approvals they needed.

”We thought about asking for a larger plaza.” the organizer said. ”Then the innkeeper pointed out that we needed fewer booths in the arrival lanes, not more stone.”

The solution cost Max nothing.

When darkness reached Sanctuary, the lanterns lit one street at a time. Patterns from different regions overlapped above the market. Children carried smaller lanterns along the fountain. Musicians changed to slower songs while food stalls sold their remaining meals.

Anna’s elite gnomes appeared together near the edge of the crowd. They were off duty, although each carried enough tools to suggest a different definition of rest. They inspected the ordinary gnome staff directing traffic and quietly criticized every inefficient movement.

Max noticed but did not intervene. The ordinary staff kept the plaza clear.

He and Anna walked the full market before returning toward the core room. Behind them, residents maintained the lanterns, collected waste, and dismantled booths no longer needed.
