Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Dagar’s first responsibility was the Redoubt.

Max’s elite team had only one.

The difference placed them in conflict before the first creature reached the courtyard.

”The western passage can reach the exchange gate.” Dagar said after receiving the route report. ”My soldiers will escort you.”

The elite captain rejected it.

”The western passage crosses two unsecured junctions. We hold here until you control them.”

”Holding Max inside the residential wall leaves him farther from his gate.”

”Moving through an unknown breach places him beside the threat.”

Dagar wanted Max returned to Sanctuary because a visiting Dungeon Master dying under safe conduct could end every possibility created by the exchange. The elite captain cared less about diplomacy than the immediate route.

Max followed the rule established during training.

”We hold until the captain approves movement.” he said.

Dagar disliked losing time and accepted that Max’s team possessed the relevant judgment.

He assigned Redoubt soldiers to secure the western junctions while his defensive captain took command of the breach. The quartermaster continued moving residents away from the eastern buildings.

The first creatures emerged through a maintenance door beneath the wall.

They were pale tunnel predators with flattened bodies and stone-colored plates across their backs. The old quarry records identified them as pack hunters that followed vibration and air movement. The ventilation exercise had carried noise and fresh air into tunnels sealed long enough for everyone to assume they were empty.

The creatures did not possess the strength to threaten the Redoubt’s core.

They had entered among civilians and disrupted defenses.

Redoubt soldiers contained the first group near the maintenance station. More movement registered in the conduit behind them. Closing the door failed because broken stone blocked its track.

The defensive captain requested engineers and heavy supports.

Max listened through the communication crystal while his team maintained a protected position. His strength could move the blocked door or debris faster than ordinary workers.

His captain anticipated the thought.

”No.” she said.

”You have not heard the proposal.”

”You want to lift something.”

Max could not deny it.

”The Redoubt needs the passage closed.”

”The Redoubt has soldiers and engineers. Our route is not secure.”

Dagar heard them.

”He could shorten the breach.”

The captain turned toward him.

”If Max enters the maintenance station, my team must protect him there. Your soldiers then protect us instead of the civilians.”

The cost made Dagar pause.

Using Max’s power would not add one worker. It would redirect every person responsible for his safety.

”Remain here.” Dagar ordered.

Max obeyed without liking the helplessness.

The quartermaster arrived with families from the eastern housing row. The protected square where Max’s team waited became a temporary gathering point. Children cried at the alarms. Workers carried tools they had grabbed before leaving. Several residents kept looking toward homes they could no longer see.

Max’s presence changed their movement. Some assumed the square must be safe because two Dungeon Masters stood there. Others slowed to stare at the foreign guards.

”We are blocking the route.” Max said.

The quartermaster agreed.

She wanted to move his team into a reinforced storehouse beside the western passage. The elite captain inspected the building and approved it after Redoubt soldiers secured the rear wall.

The relocation cleared the square without moving Max toward the breach.

Inside the storehouse, Max could hear the battle without seeing individual attacks. Orders, impacts, and warning bells described its movement. The Redoubt gave ground around the maintenance station, sealed two side corridors, and prevented the pack from spreading into the residential district.

The creatures adapted to the soldiers’ fixed line by retreating into the conduit and emerging through smaller service openings.

Dagar received each report without taking direct control from his captain.

”You could command through the dungeon.” Max said.

”I could.”

”Why do you not?”

”Because he sees the station. I see the fortress.”

Dagar had criticized Sanctuary’s slower consultation. During an emergency, he practiced his own division of authority. The captain controlled the immediate fight. Dagar controlled gates, reinforcements, and the risks accepted elsewhere.

The western route opened.

Max’s elite captain ordered movement toward the exchange courtyard.

They left the storehouse with Redoubt soldiers ahead and behind. Residents continued moving in the opposite direction toward protected buildings. The team passed the first junction without contact.

At the second, a section of floor collapsed.

The break did not come from an attack directed at Max. The tunnel predators had weakened supports beneath the passage while seeking another exit. Stone dropped into the conduit, carrying two Redoubt soldiers and one civilian coordinator with it.

The elite team halted.

The open gate lay beyond the collapse. The safe alternative required returning toward the residential square.

One fallen soldier called from below. The other two people did not answer immediately.

Dagar ordered the escort to continue around the break.

Max’s captain examined the remaining ledge. It could support individuals moving carefully. Carrying injured people across would be harder.

”We can reach the gate.” she said. ”The Redoubt can recover the fallen.”

Max looked into the opening.

His team waited for his decision because the exercise had ended. Their advice no longer became an order simply because they gave it.

”How long before the creatures reach them?” Max asked.

A Redoubt engineer estimated several minutes if the conduit barriers held. No one knew whether a side opening existed below.

”Can we recover them without losing the route?”

The captain studied the stone, her team, and the soldiers covering both directions.

”You can lift the broken support. Four of us can descend and bring them up. Dagar must hold both junctions. If another collapse begins, we withdraw even if recovery is incomplete.”

Dagar wanted Max across the ledge immediately.

The quartermaster wanted the coordinator recovered. The defensive captain needed every soldier at the maintenance station. Max’s team wanted a decision whose limits they could enforce.

Max chose the recovery.

He did not descend into the conduit or fight the creatures himself. He used his strength where the captain assigned it.

Max raised the cracked support enough for guards to secure it. Four members of his team descended on ropes. Redoubt soldiers maintained the junctions while Dagar diverted a reserve unit toward the lower conduit.

The recovery lasted only minutes and consumed attention the wider defense could have used elsewhere.

All three fallen people came up alive. One soldier could walk. The other soldier and the coordinator required stretchers.

The first tunnel predator reached the lower passage during the final lift. Max’s team contained it long enough to finish the recovery, then withdrew rather than pursuing the pack.

The group crossed the remaining ledge and continued toward the exchange courtyard.

Max did not mistake the outcome for proof that stopping had been unquestionably correct. Dagar had spent reserves and exposed two junctions. The people survived because the breach remained contained elsewhere.

”You risked the exchange for three people.” Dagar said while they moved.

”I risked time and forces under a plan my captain believed workable.” Max replied.

”If she had said no?”

”We would have continued.”

Dagar believed him because Max had followed the earlier withdrawal orders.

They reached the first courtyard.

The Sanctuary gate remained open. Anna stood beyond it with Veyrath and waiting defenders. She could see Max but did not call him across while his team established the route.

The elite captain crossed first, then signaled.

Max returned to Sanctuary.

His core awareness surrounded him again. The active resurrection estimate disappeared without being charged.

He did not feel victorious. Relief carried the weight of everything the number had represented.

Dagar remained on the Redoubt side.

”The conduit will be sealed within the hour.” he said. ”Safe conduct was not violated, but I failed to provide the controlled territory I promised.”

”The failure began beneath a route you believed secure.” Max replied. ”You contained it and kept the gate open.”

”You were placed at risk.”

”Every visit carries risk. The question is whether you concealed it or refused to respond.”

Dagar could have blamed the exercise, the engineers, or records written before he became Dungeon Master. He did none of them.

”The Redoubt will inspect every sealed conduit before any exchange traffic begins.” he said. ”I will provide the report.”

”Then we continue after review.”

Dagar looked surprised.

He had expected the breach to prove Max’s system of cooperation too trusting. Max saw the opposite. The crisis exposed a flaw, but it also showed how Dagar commanded under pressure, accepted responsibility, and protected a foreign delegation when the cost became real.

The gate closed after Dagar returned to the breach.

Anna waited until the wall became solid.

”Was the reason worth the risk?” she asked.

Max thought of Dagar, the quartermaster, the captain, and the people behind the third wall.

”Yes.” he said. ”I would not make the same trip without the same precautions.”

Anna accepted both parts of the answer.

The captain gave his report before removing his equipment.

”Max followed the withdrawal hold and did not attempt to take command.” he said. ”He left formation once during the real movement to lift a fallen Redoubt soldier.”

Anna looked at Max.

”Was the route secure?”

”The captain had called the movement.” Max replied.

”I asked whether the route was secure.”

Max glanced toward the captain.

”Secure enough for the recovery.” the captain said. ”I would have preferred advance warning. Leaving him would also have forced the Redoubt line to turn back.”

The choice had helped, but success did not erase the risk created by making it alone.

”Next time I call it before moving.” Max said.

”Next time you wait for acknowledgment.” the captain corrected.

Max accepted the distinction.

Anna had not wanted a report proving he was powerful. She wanted evidence that leaving Sanctuary had taught him something that would keep him alive the next time strength tempted him to move first.
