Dungeon Master (Karma System)

Veyrath wanted the temporary gate surrounded by soldiers.

Anna wanted the visitors to enter a room that did not look like a prison.

Both presented practical reasons.

”We do not know what abilities cross with a Dungeon Master.” Veyrath said. ”Sanctuary prevents violence. It does not prevent observation, escape, sabotage without an attack, or a power the core does not classify correctly.”

”A line of soldiers tells them we invited them into a trap.” Anna replied. ”If we want honest discussion, the first thing they see cannot be our expectation that they will betray us.”

Max stood in the unfinished receiving room while they argued.

The temporary gate would form against the northern wall. Two doors led into Sanctuary. One opened toward the public meeting hall. The other entered a controlled corridor Veyrath could close. The room contained no view of the core, portal operations, or routes into private territory.

Quin proposed a compromise.

The soldiers would remain in the controlled corridor instead of the room. Two unarmed gnomes would greet the delegations and explain Sanctuary’s rules. Veyrath and Max’s elite team would wait inside the public meeting hall where they could respond without crowding the gate.

Max spoke with the two gnomes before approving their assignment.

One worked in visitor registration. The other coordinated public meeting rooms. Neither belonged to Anna’s elite team or Max’s combat unit.

”You may refuse without affecting your positions.” Max said.

The registration gnome answered first.

”We understand.”

”Why volunteer?” Anna asked.

”Visitors arriving under unfamiliar rules need the explanation from someone who expects them to follow it, not someone who expects to fight them.”

The meeting coordinator had another reason. He wanted to know whether the receiving procedure could be performed by ordinary staff. If every gate opening required Max, Anna, Quin, Veyrath, and elite soldiers in the room, the exchange could never become a normal function.

Veyrath heard the argument.

”Normal functions become attack routes when people stop treating them as dangerous.”

”Then give ordinary staff a procedure that recognizes danger.” the coordinator replied. ”Do not make danger a skill only soldiers possess.”

Veyrath reviewed their withdrawal marks, barrier controls, and communication signals personally. He still disliked their position nearest the gate. He no longer regarded their presence as decorative hospitality.

”Unarmed gnomes become the first people at risk if the rules fail.” Veyrath said.

”They volunteered after reading the risk assessment.” Quin replied.

”Volunteering does not make them guards.”

”No. It makes them hosts.” Anna said.

Veyrath disliked placing civilians closer to an unknown gate than soldiers. Anna disliked allowing military caution to define a diplomatic exchange. Neither concern could be removed.

Max chose the compromise and added a core-triggered barrier between the gate and the rest of the room. If Sanctuary failed to suppress violence, the barrier would isolate the arrivals until Max understood why.

”The barrier is a defense they cannot see before crossing.” Veyrath said.

”The written rules will state that the room can be sealed.” Max replied. ”We will not provide the mechanism.”

Veyrath accepted the decision.

Hizon requested a place in the meeting.

”Merrit wants trade.” he said. ”You can discuss principles. I know what goods and services the Undercity can actually provide.”

”You also want first access to another dungeon’s market.” Max said.

”Yes.”

Hizon saw no reason to hide a motivation everyone could predict. He did not want Merrit’s crafters entering Sanctuary, learning which businesses earned well, and making arrangements before the Undercity understood the opportunity.

Max allowed him to attend as an adviser. Hizon could negotiate no binding agreement without Max’s approval.

Veyrath would speak with Dagar’s defensive captain. Anna and Quin would remain with Max. Kildra, Nethren, and the Orc Chief received the meeting agenda but did not attend. The first contact did not require every authority in the dungeon to appear before people who had not earned access to them.

The system required both sides to confirm the temporary gate at the same moment.

Max reviewed the resurrection estimate before doing so.

The core could restore him inside his own dungeon if he died elsewhere. The cost depended on his strength and distance from Sanctuary. Even the closest possible exchange connection placed the estimate above two million Dungeon Points. A farther dungeon could raise it substantially.

The estimate did not apply while Max remained in Sanctuary. It mattered if he later crossed into another dungeon.

Anna read the amount beside him.

”You are not traveling today.” she said.

”No.”

”If this develops into an exchange, millions of Dungeon Points become part of every decision to leave.”

”I know.”

”Knowing the number and accepting the loss are different.”

Anna did not tell him he could never go. She wanted him to understand that resurrection would protect his life by injuring everything else the dungeon could have built with those points.

”I will not cross without a reason worth the risk.” Max said.

She accepted the promise because it contained judgment rather than an impossible guarantee.

At the appointed time, Max confirmed the gate.

The northern wall darkened, then opened into a stone courtyard beneath a gray sky. The Iron Redoubt waited on the other side.

Dagar stood at the front of his delegation. He was broader than Max expected, with close-cut dark hair and armor built for long wear rather than display. His defensive captain remained half a step behind. The civilian quartermaster carried a sealed case and watched the gate mechanism instead of the soldiers beyond it.

One of the gnome hosts recited the rule notice.

”Violence is impossible throughout Sanctuary except inside the Arena. Drawing a weapon, beginning an attack, or deliberately harming another person will fail. The receiving room may be sealed by Sanctuary’s Dungeon Master. Crossing confirms acceptance of these conditions.”

Dagar listened without interrupting.

His captain asked one question.

”Does restraint count as harm?”

”Physical restraint imposed through violence will fail.” the gnome replied. ”Authorized staff may direct visitors to leave. The Dungeon Master may close access or apply nonviolent restrictions.”

Dagar crossed first.

The captain followed, then tested the rule by placing one hand on his sword and attempting to draw an inch. The weapon did not move.

Veyrath emerged from the meeting hall.

”You were told it would fail.” he said.

”I was told by people I had not met.” the captain replied.

Veyrath considered the answer.

”Now you know.”

The exchange contained no friendliness, but each understood the other’s purpose. The captain needed proof before relying on a foreign safety rule. Veyrath needed visitors to recognize that testing boundaries would be noticed.

Dagar examined the room.

”No visible guards.” he said.

”Visible guards were waiting beyond the door.” Max replied. ”The gate can also be isolated.”

”You disclose the barrier.”

”The rules disclosed it before you crossed.”

Dagar nodded. He appeared more comfortable after learning that Sanctuary’s welcome did not depend on helplessness.

The Iron Redoubt gate closed. The Thousand Works connected several minutes later.

Merrit’s arrival chamber looked nothing like a fortress. Brass frameworks covered the walls. Suspended tools moved between worktables. Colored lines marked safe positions around a machine testing repeated impacts against a metal plate.

Merrit wore a heavy coat with more pockets than Max could count. His contract keeper carried three document cases. The master artificer stared past the gnomes at the receiving room’s barrier supports before anyone spoke.

The rule notice was repeated.

”May tools cross?” the artificer asked.

”Inactive tools identified before entry.” the gnome said.

The artificer presented a measuring frame, two mechanical gauges, and a sealed tool roll. The core classified each as an object rather than a creature or active magical construct. Max approved them.

Merrit crossed and immediately attempted to remove a small knife used for cutting cord.

It remained in his pocket.

”I expected the rule to distinguish tools by intent.” he said.

”The rule prevents you from drawing it while preparing to test violence.” Max replied.

”Then the dungeon recognized intent before action.”

Merrit’s interest was technical. Dagar’s captain had tested whether the rule worked. Merrit tested how it worked.

”Do not repeat the experiment with a different intention.” Veyrath said.

”I have the result I wanted.” Merrit replied.

The two visiting Dungeon Masters studied each other.

Dagar had expected the meeting to involve Max alone. Merrit had expected competition for Sanctuary’s attention. Neither had known Max invited another survivor until the gates opened.

”You concealed the second delegation.” Dagar said.

”I did not disclose either delegation to the other.” Max replied. ”Your private information remained private for the same reason.”

Merrit smiled slightly.

”He wanted to see whether our stated goals survive contact with someone seeking something different.”

”I wanted one meeting instead of repeating every explanation.” Max said.

Anna recognized the moment before either visitor could decide the surprise represented manipulation.

”If either of you objects to a joint meeting, we will provide separate rooms.” she said. ”No agreement requires all three dungeons.”

Dagar wanted defensive knowledge. Merrit wanted trade. Separating them would protect control but remove the chance to learn what each could offer the other.

Dagar chose first.

”The meeting remains joint.”

Merrit agreed.

They entered the public meeting hall.

Max did not sit at the head of a long table. The room contained a square arrangement with equal working space on every side. Sanctuary’s maps remained limited to public routes. Dagar’s quartermaster placed the sealed case beside her chair. Merrit’s contract keeper arranged blank agreements without presenting one.
