”Drip~”

In the dark basement, there was only the faintest candlelight. Beneath the dry, deep Holy Relic Hall, waiting for Laine and Tygris were only numerous bones and a stalactite column dripping water.

The sturdy stone slabs and walls cast with molten iron were filled with golden runes, as well as numerous scriptures and holy seals reinforcing the space.

Other than these, there was nothing — no imagined magnificence nor divineness. If Laine hadn’t seen it with his own eyes, this was just an ordinary basement and not the legendary treasure vault of the Justice Church Cathedral, said to have amassed countless riches.

”It is said that Brunswick is a great city built on a swamp.” Laine felt the cold wind tousling his hair, hearing the sound of water ahead: ”As it turns out, the story is true.”

Long steps led further down, as Laine and Tygris descended slowly.

”Brunswick was previously called Rickdorf; this is the famous origin of the Gallorin Tribe. After the Great Calamity period, Emperor Charlemagne led the Gallorin Tribe to rise here. At that time, Charlemagne was merely known as Charley, just the son of an ordinary tenant farmer. He grew up herding cattle, experiencing the warmth and coldness of life but always maintaining his love for it.” Tygris introduced the story of Emperor Charlemagne: ”As you might know, after the Great Calamity period, the Human Wizard Empire fell, and the cultural legacy was utterly destroyed. Although many human books were preserved, very few knew how to read and write. In those days of humans living primitively, any barbarian who could read the first line of a book was already regarded as a remarkable scholar.”

”The entire humankind was practically in a state of semi-literacy and illiteracy.” Laine remarked sarcastically: ”So how did Emperor Charlemagne learn to read?”

”When Emperor Charlemagne was twelve, he saved a priest attacked by a Giant Demon while herding cattle. This priest was a Holy Word Priest of the God of Justice, holding the rank of Regional Bishop, but his powers were severely weakened due to yet another fall of the God of Justice.” Tygris continued: ”Despite his young age, Charley was already quite intelligent, yearning for knowledge more than anyone. After savagely beheading the Giant Demon, he bravely used milk and eggs to help the priest recover his health. He was lucky, as this priest was one of the rare learned individuals of the time. When the priest asked what reward he desired...”

”I wish to read.” Laine softly said.

Tygris’s face remained barely visible in the darkness, always so composed: ”Correct.”

”The priest’s name was Arguin. He decided to stay to repay the life-saving grace, spending a year teaching Charley and his father Pepin to read and write, along with basic mathematics.”

”Hence, Charley and his father Pepin became the only literate individuals in the Gallorin Tribe capable of arithmetic. They read all the books collected by the tribe. The tribal warriors scrambled to have their children taught by them, elevating the father and son’s status until a terrible war came to an end, and the original chief was killed in battle. Pepin was then elected as the new chief.”

”By the time Charley was fifteen, he had read almost the entire collection of books acquired by the Gallorin Tribe. At that moment, while leading a tribal army, Charley coincidentally rescued a Dwarf caravan captured by Green Skins — surprisingly, the future Dwarf Supreme King, Kugan Ironbeard, was among them. To express his gratitude, Kugan Ironbeard gifted the heirloom of the Dwarf Supreme King, the rune warhammer Gail-Malaz, to Charley. He added ’magne’ to his name, symbolizing the Dwarves’ recognition of humanity’s status in the Old World... The rest, you know.”

”A truly great story.” Laine murmured: ”Those times have been buried in the river of time, and now there are very few books documenting those stories.”

”We’ve arrived...” Tygris didn’t continue the conversation because they had reached their destination.

The destination was a series of tomb structures connected together. On the structures were vivid murals depicting many stories — all of which were great battles in Imperial history.

The ”Black Fire Pass Battle,” where humans and the Dwarf Alliance Army utterly defeated the Green Skins.

The ”Rick River Battle,” where humans and the Dwarf Alliance’s forces clashed with Nagash’s undead army.

The first Chaos Invasion against the initial Eternal Divine Chosen ”Unifier” Moka.

...

”Here’s the recent story where Emperor Carl Franz led the imperial army to ambush and defeat a southward Barbarian army on the Nord Kingdom’s coastline.” Laine didn’t look at each mural thoroughly, for there were too many. He and Tygris were not there to sightsee.

”Obviously, humans have been continuously updating.” Tygris sensed the aura within the building complex: ”This way.”

”Are elves the same?” Laine quickly followed in Tygris’s footsteps, drawing out Mjolnir, whose hammer shaft sparked persistently with pale blue electricity.

”...” Tygris did not respond; instead, he focused his gaze on a room.

This was clearly the bedroom of Archbishop ”The Resolute” Vicma Bekman.
