Peaceful Farm Life

Chapter 2093: Chapter 2094: Unifying the World (23)

Xiao Changyi said: ”Let her be. Even if we are no longer here, Jing’er and the others will take care of her. Even if she never marries, Jing’er and the others will look after her.” He paused, ”As long as she is happy, that’s enough.”

An Jing nodded, ”That’s true.” Then she burst into laughter and said, ”Husband, it’s funny how she has been preparing her dowry since she was a child, and if she doesn’t marry, she will have prepared it all for nothing.”

Xiao Changyi said nothing, but his lips curled into a slight smile.

At that moment, the sound of galloping hooves approached rapidly, urgent like an express courier, and both An Jing and Xiao Changyi knew something was wrong. They stood up and went to the door.

As soon as they reached the door, Su Chengyu’s personal guard dismounted swiftly, and upon dismounting, he knelt before Xiao Changyi and An Jing, and said urgently and sadly, ”King, Queen, the Emperor is failing.”

Without saying a word, Xiao Changyi and An Jing turned and went to the stables, mounted their horses, and rode to the Imperial City.

Xiao Changyi was already sixty-two, and An Jing was fifty-six, but fortunately, their bodies were still robust. Even though they traveled day and night, they arrived in the Imperial City five days later to see Su Chengyu, who was hanging onto life.

Su Chengyu was lying on the imperial bed, his breath faint as a thread.

Su Chengyu was only sixty years old, and Xiao Changyi and An Jing never imagined Su Chengyu would leave before them.

Upon seeing Xiao Changyi and An Jing arrive, Su Chengyu’s originally muddled eyes slowly focused, and with a weak smile, he said, ”Brother Yi, Sister-in-law, I finally waited for you both; I can die without regrets.”

Xiao Changyi stepped forward, sat at the bedside, and held the trembling hand Su Chengyu extended towards him.

An Jing’s eyes were red, and her voice was choked: ”Chengyu, don’t speak nonsense, you still have a long life ahead of you.” Although she said this, she could see that Su Chengyu was truly dying.

Su Chengyu shook his head slightly and smiled, ”Sister-in-law, don’t comfort me with words. I know my condition, it has worsened over the years, and I am content to have endured until today. Fortunately, I can see you one last time before I die; I truly have no regrets in this life.”

As he spoke, Su Chengyu looked at Xiao Changyi, wanting to grip his hand tightly, but lacking the strength, Xiao Changyi had to hold his hand tightly.

Xiao Changyi wanted to speak, but his throat was painfully choked, preventing him from uttering a single word.

It was Su Chengyu who, weakly, smiled and spoke again: ”Brother Yi, I did it. The world is at peace, and the people are living and working contently. I can face Father without shame.”

Xiao Changyi’s throat tightened even more. His brother was truly a good Emperor, one who would be remembered forever.

Ning Wenxian, Su Muchen, and Su Muxue were already crying uncontrollably.

An Jing also couldn’t stop her tears from falling.

Su Chengyu was increasingly powerless, his breath weakening, yet he still struggled to speak: ”Brother Yi, I always... always feared you would go before me. You promised to protect me for a lifetime, and now my life is about to end. You truly fulfilled your promise. In the next life, I want to be your real younger brother, so we can be true siblings under our father. What do you say... is that alright?”

”Alright.” Xiao Changyi’s single word was choked beyond belief.

Su Chengyu smiled, and with that smile, slowly closed his eyes. The hand that had some strength slowly lost all power in Xiao Changyi’s hand, his breath ceased, and so he passed. Yet the hint of a smile remained, content and satisfied.

In this life, he had no regrets.

In this life, he had no remorse.

In this life, he was fulfilled.
