Surviving The Fourth Calamity

Chapter 1601: Chapter 179: The Procrastinating Moon Clan

One cannot deny, the Basia people do have a bit of luck.

Though locusts cloud the sky, even daring to bite people, under the protection of the Temple and some undead guardians, those unfortunate souls who’ve lost their roofs were escorted into the safe house that Hill originally built... the Eden people merely want to seize territory, not abandoning William’s tasks.

Even over at Ellie’s side, if not for William having no objections and still going on missions as usual, these people wouldn’t have made it to this point today.

By the time Ditte, exhausted, took over city defense upon rushing back, Basia City resumed its proper routines.

Of course, Ditte and his team’s main task was still helping the Temple deliver free food every day.

There was no choice; not only were there more locusts, but they were also growing larger, even manifesting as blood-red... obviously carnivorous.

Even though these locusts can be resisted just by wearing the lowest level armor, and wealthy people can travel by crystal energy carriage, the poor have no courage to step out of their apartment buildings.

Yet, these people are the backbone of Basia City’s normal life... cleaning, grocery shopping and cooking, transporting miscellaneous items.

Those middle-class citizens couldn’t possibly afford household servants; they rely on the hard work of these lower class folks to maintain their dignified lives.

Conversely, those holed up in the safe house, nibbling on delivered black bread and clear water, were very quiet.

Though they had no choice but to live with many others, being able to eat to one’s fill was happiness.

However, their quietness and happiness were trivial in this city.

The resentment and unemployment of the middle-class citizens were what influenced the upper echelons of the city.

Ditte quickly felt the pressures from the nobility.

Yet he was utterly unconcerned.

Military nobility might struggle against these political creatures, old foxes, in peacetime, but in these times, he was fearless.

Not gonna happen is not gonna happen.

Want a better life? Spend money to hire the undead to work, don’t expect him to do volunteer work!

Heh~ as far as he’s concerned, being able to eat and drink enough is what matters.

His Knight Corps protects life, not prosperity.

Fully aware of why the nobles sought him, hoping he’d push out those holed up in the safe house to work, Ditte showed no mercy to anyone.

Even if they subtly hinted at Ellie through their conversations.

Even if these aristocrats exaggerated the dangers of Cain Valley countless times... whether Lind’s territory would survive this locust plague, or if, should they withstand this disaster, those covetous strong ones would certainly desire this place more.

That Earth Traveler, no matter how strong, could he withstand a siege from multiple people?

Even if his capabilities surpass the limits of this world, once Hill wields that mighty power, won’t he be directly cast out by the World Master?

Heh~

At that time, without strong protection, Cain Valley and Lind the Baron, who can only rely on the undead and disown his family, likely face a grim fate.

Indeed, he’s the master of the valley.

But swapping the valley for a new master? Not so tough... force Lind to marry a wife would suffice.

If Ditte wants to protect his own brother, it’d be best to compromise with Basia City’s upper-class nobles.

If not for knowing from the beginning the fearlessness of those Proud Sky Alliance people and their absolute trust in Hill, Ditte thinks perhaps he really would compromise.

Though he wouldn’t truly push the poor to risk their lives amidst the locust plague, he’d surely demand more from his knights... like escorting these poor people out to work.

Luckily, it hasn’t come to that yet.

Ditte sat stably atop a high-rise in the commercial street, watching through a crystal window below at the undead relentlessly slaughtering locusts.

Though sea monsters are willing to eat, and the undead aren’t very worried about the locusts’ bites, they seem to greatly dislike these bugs, their expressions quite displeased.

It’s quite satisfyingly amusing to watch.

Heh~

Despite the number of undead in Basia City not differing much from before, their combat power and execution have vastly contrasted.

If they were the Proud Sky Alliance crowd, even if they couldn’t sense the end of the locust plague nor see any effect from their slaughter, they’d persist for a while longer before choosing to give up.

However, the Eden people seem to detest monotonous repetitive labor, so while individuals continuously engage in manhunts, it’s clear they only last a little while before leaving.

It’s merely their numbers that make them appear perpetually busy.

Though, they probably have some task from the Deities... just unclear whether it’s from Aesces or the undead’s own Main God, Ditte observed for long and noted that despite reluctance, they still daily come out to kill several hundred to thousand.

And those massive sea monsters, unless these locusts rush into the sea, remain motionless.

Ellie, even more silent, even her favorite undead maidens are nowhere in sight.

Ditte even somewhat suspected if the bugs were orchestrated by her!

Fortunately, Ditte didn’t need to worry about whether Cain Valley would be destroyed by the locust plague...No one knows what the former Great Sage did, but within the maze range, snakes, scorpions, insects, and ants are almost unseen.

Ditte looked with some melancholy towards the direction of Basia City. He had just spoken to the employees left by ’Lu Huayu’ in those stores.

Even the people in Stelter Castle knew that the cliff above was unaffected by locusts, and some sideline family members living behind the castle even came to test if they could also move to the cliff to live. Those who originally wanted to take action in Cain Valley naturally wouldn’t be unaware.

After all, Ellie would definitely convey the message.

He sighed softly: Even though he repeatedly instructed, what the knights can accomplish, they still can’t require their families to do the same.

And his knights couldn’t possibly do anything against their own families.

He now understood the words of ’Old Age Striking King’ before he left...Everyone has troublesome relatives.

After consuming the Focus Potion for several days, Ditte belatedly realized, none of his knights chose to collude with Ellie, but they couldn’t guarantee not saying anything upon returning home.

And their families couldn’t keep the secrets from some people in Stelter Castle, especially when...the haughty sideline members in the castle lived worse than these ordinary knights’ families.

Therefore, during that period, they swaggered around in Basia City often.

Ditto didn’t even know, among those living in the wooden houses on the maze’s edge now, if anyone had issues.

The only consolation is that these ordinary folks, at most, would sell information for money, and wouldn’t go as far as being changed by the Evil God’s Power.

How to say it...To accept such energy, one’s body must have some foundation.

If an ordinary person comes into contact with even a bit of the Evil God’s Power, it would be enough to directly turn them into a monster, and that of the small kind.

Ditte took a deep breath.

After this disaster, he planned to cleanse his Knight Corps once again.

Although some knights wouldn’t condone their family’s misdeeds, and might even choose justice over family loyalty, Ditte still couldn’t keep them in the Knight Corps.

A Knight Corps like theirs that requires united defense absolutely can’t have any discord, once there’s a ’maybe,’ it signifies the end.

Ditte glanced into the distance, a bit troubled...Currently, he couldn’t leave Basia City for Cain Valley, he was really worried.

Who knows how things are over there now.

Lind walked with difficulty in the city nominally belonging to him, the crowds too big, the streets too packed.

The Proud Sky Alliance seemed to be conducting a pre-war mobilization, all family members flocked to the main road in front of the castle, yet for some reason, there was no movement for half a day, and these bored fellows gathered in groups to set off fireworks, engage in contests, the onlookers laughed and chatted enthusiastically.

Making Lind’s attempt to reach the front an immense challenge.

However, Lind absolutely didn’t want to be squeezed into any family’s territory...these Undead Tribe people actually placed traps on his necessary path!

The buildings were chaotic enough not to mention, but as there were proper houses outside blocking them, passersby could barely hold on without looking up.

But! What’s with the freeze or puddle traps placed on pedestrian paths?

Do they find amusement in causing misfortune to their own people?

Lind felt he could only thank the Commander for strictly prohibiting any tricks on the main road, plus having sufficient counter capacities.

Struggling to enter Gourd Mouth...After the Undead Tribe showed him various gourds, he began to call this defense zone Gourd Mouth too...Lind took several steadying breaths before stepping into the front triangular fortress.

”Ah! Lind, you’re here!” ’Lu Huayu’ greeted with a smile at the foot of the stairs, ”Anything you need?”

”I heard you have news about my brother, how is he?” Lind asked bluntly.

Previously ’Lu Huayu’ would go to him daily, but with Lind worried about a major enemy’s arrival, this Undead Tribe member couldn’t pull away briefly.

”Ditte is doing well.” ’Lu Huayu’ said warmly, ”The locust plague hasn’t impacted Basia City as much.”

”I fear he might act with excessive kindness.” Lind straightforwardly said.

”Hill left a safe house for the poor in Basia.” ’Snow Cloud Peak’ looked up at him, ”Your brother isn’t a fool.”

”When will the enemy arrive?” Lind softly asked the Commander who was frowning over his tablet.

”The Moon Clan is also gathering.” ’Snow Cloud Peak’ sighed, ”Damn, it’s been gathering for a day, still not finished. How can they be so worthless!

I’m dying here!”

Lind was momentarily speechless.

No wonder so many Undead Tribes huddled in the city and went crazy.

Over here, those preparing for battle have already formed ranks, yet the others haven’t departed!

”Then, what about the Great Sages?” He still had some concern.

”Ha~” ’Snow Cloud Peak’ rolled his eyes, ”Don’t worry about those few, our young...Hill’s hands are itching!”
