Chapter 49: Chapter Forty-Seven: The Home She Chose The Door That Shouldn’t Exist

Lin Yue stared at the golden message.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO GO HOME?

Her fingers tightened around the edge of the table.

Another line appeared.

YOUR OLD LIFE IS WAITING.

She stopped breathing.

For years, she had imagined home.

Not this world.

Not the old wooden courtyard.

Not the farm.

Not the Golden Space.

Her original home.

The world of electricity and libraries.

Hospitals.

Supermarkets.

Cars.

Rain jackets.

Instant noodles.

Her old apartment.

Her university.

Her books.

Her wilderness equipment.

Her old life.

She had never admitted how much she missed it.

The message knew.

That was what frightened her.

”How do you know?”

The Golden Space remained silent.

Then:

BECAUSE YOU STILL WANT IT.

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

”Yes.”

The answer was barely a whisper.

”I do.”

The Memory

The Golden Space changed.

The farm disappeared.

In its place—

Lin Yue saw a familiar mountain.

Her mountain.

The forest where she had spent years filming survival expeditions.

The river.

The old trail.

The equipment shop at the foot of the mountain.

Her apartment.

Her desk.

Her books.

Her laptop.

Her battered survival backpack.

Even the torn strap.

Lin Yue’s eyes filled with tears.

She reached toward it.

”That’s impossible.”

A voice whispered:

Nothing is impossible.

She froze.

The First Hunger.

It wasn’t speaking through words anymore.

It was speaking through memories.

You don’t belong here.

Lin Yue’s hand trembled.

You died.

Her throat tightened.

You lost everything.

The image of her old home became clearer.

You can have it back.

Lin Yue took one step forward.

Then another.

Shen Rui Notices

Shen Rui entered the room.

He immediately saw the Golden Space.

And the expression on Lin Yue’s face.

He didn’t ask what was happening.

He simply walked toward her.

”Lin Yue.”

She didn’t answer.

He looked through the golden doorway.

His expression changed.

”What is that?”

”My old home.”

He understood.

”You want to go back.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”I don’t know.”

Shen Rui didn’t try to stop her.

That surprised her.

”You aren’t going to tell me not to go?”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because it’s your choice.”

She stared at him.

He continued quietly:

”If you choose to leave, I won’t pretend it doesn’t hurt.”

Lin Yue’s eyes filled with tears.

”But I won’t make the choice for you.”

The First Hunger’s Promise

The golden doorway expanded.

The voice returned.

You can return.

Lin Yue stared.

You can take your knowledge with you.

Images appeared.

Her old university.

Her books.

Her research.

Her wilderness equipment.

Her friends.

Her ordinary life.

You can forget this world.

Lin Yue’s heart clenched.

Forget?

She looked at Shen Rui.

Then at the farm outside.

The fields.

The village.

The people she had taught.

The children.

The Guardians.

The World-Tree.

The family she had found here.

The life she had built.

The First Hunger whispered:

You never chose this world.

Lin Yue swallowed.

”No.”

You were forced here.

”Yes.”

You died before you were ready.

Her eyes closed.

”Yes.”

Then why stay?

Lin Yue had no answer.

The Older Lin Yue Appears

The older Lin Yue suddenly appeared.

She looked at the doorway.

Then at the younger Lin Yue.

”Don’t go through.”

Lin Yue turned.

”You told me I had to make my own choices.”

”I did.”

”Then why are you telling me not to?”

”Because I recognize the trap.”

Lin Yue looked at the doorway.

”What trap?”

The older woman pointed.

”Look carefully.”

Lin Yue frowned.

At first, everything seemed perfect.

Then she noticed something.

The rain wasn’t moving.

The trees weren’t swaying.

Her old apartment clock was frozen.

A cup of coffee sat on the desk.

Steam rose from it.

But never disappeared.

The computer screen displayed the same image.

The same second.

The same moment.

Lin Yue stepped closer.

”This isn’t my old world.”

”No.”

”It’s a memory.”

The older Lin Yue nodded.

”Worse.”

She looked toward the darkness beyond the doorway.

”It’s a world built from your desire.”

The Perfect Home

Lin Yue stared.

The First Hunger spoke again.

You wanted your old life.

The apartment became brighter.

Her old bedroom appeared.

Everything was exactly as she remembered.

Except—

there was no mess.

No unfinished work.

No broken equipment.

No unpaid bills.

No difficult decisions.

No failures.

No arguments.

No uncertainty.

It was perfect.

Lin Yue felt sick.

”This isn’t home.”

The First Hunger answered:

You said you wanted home.

”I wanted my life.”

This is your life without pain.

Lin Yue stared.

”No.”

She stepped backward.

”My life had pain.”

The image flickered.

”I lost people.”

Flicker.

”I made mistakes.”

Flicker.

”I failed.”

Flicker.

”I was sometimes lonely.”

Flicker.

”But those things happened.”

The doorway trembled.

”They were mine.”

The First Hunger went silent.

The First Crack

Lin Yue realized something.

The First Hunger didn’t understand love.

It understood desire.

It could reproduce what someone wanted.

But it couldn’t reproduce why that thing mattered.

It could give her a perfect apartment.

But not the years she spent living there.

It could give her her books.

But not the nights she stayed awake reading them.

It could give her a mountain.

But not the exhaustion of reaching its summit.

It could give her friends.

But not the memories created together.

It could give her everything she remembered—

without giving her the life that made those things meaningful.

Lin Yue smiled sadly.

”You don’t understand what home is.”

The darkness shifted.

Explain.

Lin Yue looked at Shen Rui.

Then at her family.

Then toward the farm.

”Home isn’t a place.”

She touched her chest.

”It’s where my life continues.”

The Door Attacks

The golden doorway suddenly cracked.

Darkness rushed through.

Shen Rui immediately pulled Lin Yue backward.

The older Lin Yue raised her hand.

The Guardians appeared.

Lumi flashed with golden light.

The World-Tree shook.

The First Hunger’s voice became louder.

YOU WILL REGRET THIS.

Lin Yue stood.

”No.”

The darkness surged.

YOU WILL LOSE THEM.

Lin Yue’s heart hurt.

That fear was real.

She could lose them.

She could lose Shen Rui.

Her parents.

Grandmother.

The farm.

The village.

Everyone.

The First Hunger had finally found the right weapon.

Not desire.

Fear of losing desire.

Lin Yue’s Answer

She took a deep breath.

”Yes.”

Everyone froze.

Lin Yue looked into the darkness.

”I might lose them.”

Shen Rui stared at her.

”But that’s what makes them precious.”

The darkness recoiled.

”I cannot guarantee that everyone I love will live forever.”

The Golden Space trembled.

”I cannot guarantee this farm will never fail.”

Another crack appeared.

”I cannot guarantee that this world will always be safe.”

The First Hunger screamed.

The doorway began collapsing.

”But I can choose to live while I have them.”

The darkness shattered.

The Golden Space Responds

A tremendous wave of golden light spread across the Space.

The Legacy roots ignited.

Every connection between teacher and student.

Every seed shared.

Every tool improved.

Every village council.

Every family.

Every friendship.

Every small act of cooperation.

All of it became light.

Lin Yue understood.

The First Hunger fed on isolated desire.

But the Legacy System transformed individual desires into shared purpose.

The more people connected their knowledge—

the harder it became for one desire to control everything.

The Golden Space displayed a new message.

LEGACY NETWORK STABILIZED.

Then:

EXTERNAL DESIRE INFLUENCE: REJECTED.

Then:

NEW PRINCIPLE RECOGNIZED.

Lin Yue waited.

HOME IS WHERE CHOICE CONTINUES.

She smiled.

”That sounds right.”

The First Hunger Retreats

The darkness withdrew.

But before disappearing, the voice whispered:

You cannot protect everyone.

Lin Yue answered:

”I know.”

You cannot save every world.

”I know.”

You will lose people.

Lin Yue closed her eyes.

”I know.”

The First Hunger paused.

Then:

And you still choose this?

Lin Yue opened her eyes.

”Yes.”

The darkness disappeared.

The Golden Door closed.

Silence

For several seconds—

nobody spoke.

Then the squirrel peeked out from behind a chair.

”Is it gone?”

Lumi nodded.

”Yes.”

The squirrel sighed with relief.

”Excellent.”

Everyone looked at it.

”What?”

”I was extremely brave.”

Grandmother snorted.

”You hid behind the furniture.”

”Strategic bravery.”

Lin Yue laughed.

The tension finally broke.

The Family Embraces Her

Her mother reached her first.

She wrapped both arms around Lin Yue.

Lin Yue froze.

Then hugged her back.

Her father joined.

Grandmother joined.

Soon Lin Yue found herself trapped beneath an entire family.

”Too tight!”

”No.”

”Grandmother!”

”You scared us.”

”I scared myself.”

Her father kissed the top of her head.

”You don’t have to be strong every moment.”

Lin Yue’s eyes became wet.

”I know.”

For once—

she allowed herself to be held.

Shen Rui Waits

Later, everyone left them alone.

Shen Rui stood beneath the World-Tree.

Lin Yue approached.

”You didn’t stop me.”

”No.”

”Why?”

”Because you needed to choose.”

She looked at him.

”And if I’d left?”

He smiled sadly.

”I would have missed you.”

Lin Yue’s heart tightened.

”That’s all?”

”No.”

He stepped closer.

”I would have respected you.”

She stared at him.

”That may be the most frightening thing you’ve ever said.”

He laughed.

”Why?”

”Because now I know I can trust you.”

The Promise

Lin Yue took his hand.

”I don’t know what happens next.”

”Neither do I.”

”I don’t know how long we’ll have.”

”No.”

”I don’t know whether we’ll defeat the First Hunger.”

Shen Rui smiled.

”Then let’s not promise that.”

”What should we promise?”

He thought.

”That we’ll keep choosing.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Even when it’s difficult?”

”Especially then.”

She nodded.

”Deal.”

A New Project

The next morning, Lin Yue called another meeting.

Everyone groaned.

The previous crisis had barely ended.

Lin Yue placed a blueprint on the table.

Shen Rui stared.

”What’s that?”

”A new project.”

The head engineer leaned forward.

”Another irrigation system?”

”No.”

”A new workshop?”

”No.”

”A larger farm?”

”No.”

Lin Yue smiled.

”We’re building a disaster-resilient village.”

The room became silent.

She explained.

Not a fortress.

Not a military compound.

A village capable of functioning during:

Floods.

Droughts.

Crop failures.

Disease outbreaks.

Trade interruptions.

Road closures.

Power loss.

Communication failures.

Magic disruptions.

And World Road instability.

The farmers became interested.

The engineers leaned closer.

The healers began taking notes.

The accountants immediately started calculating.

Lin Yue smiled.

This was what she knew.

Not defeating an ancient cosmic entity.

Building systems.

One problem at a time.

The Resilience Village

The design included:

Food

Multiple crops.

Seed reserves.

Root-cellar storage.

Drying facilities.

Fermentation.

Emergency grain reserves.

Water

Rainwater harvesting.

Protected wells.

Filtration.

Boiling systems.

Separate drinking and wastewater channels.

Shelter

Fire-resistant construction.

Flood-resistant foundations.

Ventilation.

Emergency storage.

Health

Herbal gardens.

Clean-water protocols.

Sanitation stations.

Isolation rooms.

First-aid training.

Knowledge

Printed manuals.

Duplicate archives.

Apprenticeships.

Community teaching.

Finance

Transparent ledgers.

Emergency funds.

Local credit systems.

Multiple trade partners.

Manufacturing

Basic tools.

Replacement parts.

Repair workshops.

Local raw materials.

Agriculture

Crop rotation.

Composting.

Soil testing.

Water conservation.

Integrated pest management.

Agroforestry.

Governance

Local councils.

Shared decision-making.

Succession plans.

Emergency procedures.

No single point of control.

Lin Yue looked at the completed plan.

”This isn’t a perfect system.”

The older Lin Yue smiled.

”Good.”

”Why?”

”Because perfect systems don’t exist.”

Lin Yue nodded.

”They only pretend to.”

The Golden Space Grows Again

That evening, Lin Yue entered the Golden Space.

The Legacy roots had spread.

The fields were larger.

The forests healthier.

The waterways cleaner.

The villages more connected.

But something else had appeared.

A small house.

Nothing grand.

No golden roof.

No magical tower.

Just a simple wooden house beside a field.

Lin Yue walked toward it.

Inside was a kitchen.

A table.

Two chairs.

A small fireplace.

A shelf of books.

A window overlooking the fields.

She smiled.

”What is this?”

The Golden Space did not explain.

Shen Rui stepped beside her.

”A home.”

Lin Yue looked at him.

”Our home?”

He smiled.

”If you want it to be.”

Lin Yue looked through the window.

Children were running through the fields.

Farmers were working.

The World-Tree stood in the distance.

Her family was laughing somewhere beyond the hill.

She smiled.

”Yes.”

She reached for his hand.

”I think I do.”

Beyond the Stars

Far away—

the First Hunger watched.

It had failed to tempt Lin Yue with her past.

But it had learned something important.

She had a weakness.

Not greed.

Not power.

Not immortality.

Connection.

The ancient creature understood.

If it could not isolate Lin Yue through desire—

perhaps it could threaten the people she loved.

A new black thread appeared beyond the World Road.

Then another.

Each one connected to a different world.

The First Hunger whispered:

If she refuses to surrender herself...

The darkness spread.

Then perhaps she will surrender for them.

The New Beginning

Lin Yue knew nothing about the new threat.

She was too busy arguing with the engineers about drainage.

”No.”

The engineer frowned.

”Why not?”

”Because the slope is wrong.”

”We calculated it.”

”You calculated rainfall.”

She pointed toward the hills.

”You didn’t calculate runoff after three days of continuous rain.”

The engineer stared.

Then slowly smiled.

”She’s right.”

Lin Yue grinned.

Shen Rui watched from the doorway.

”You’re happy.”

”Very.”

”Even after everything?”

She looked across the farm.

”Yes.”

”Why?”

Lin Yue smiled.

”Because tomorrow isn’t guaranteed.”

She picked up her shovel.

”But tomorrow’s work still needs doing.”

Shen Rui laughed.

”You really are impossible.”

She looked over her shoulder.

”And yet...”

He smiled.

”And yet.”

Together, they walked toward the fields.

Behind them, the little farm continued growing.

Not because Lin Yue controlled it.

Not because the Golden Space gave her everything.

But because hundreds of ordinary people had begun building something extraordinary together.

And somewhere beneath the soil—

a tiny golden root pushed deeper.

Waiting.

Growing.

Connecting.

The future was still unknown.

And for the first time—

Lin Yue was no longer afraid of that.

To be continued...
